| Gross Catholic High School |
Greetings!
On September 7th we welcomed over 300 guests to our building in celebration of our annual Grandparent's Day Liturgy. As I indicated on that day, what a marvelous celebration of family! It is not often that in these busy times of work and school and activities, we take the time or are given the time to share moments with the most important people in our lives -- those we love. It is especially fitting that we combine this celebration of family with prayer, since it is our faith and our families that provide our school with the foundation on which we build all we do. We are very grateful for the continued support of both.
As our school year continues to move forward, I am very happy to welcome Ellen Poly back to our community as our new Alumni/Communications Director. Ellen is a 2005 graduate of Gross Catholic and earned her post-secondary degree from UNL in 2009. Ellen's responsibilities in our Advancement Office will include alumni event planning and management of our public relations and marketing efforts. Ellen began her position at the beginning of this month and we are very happy to welcome her back "home".
Again, we are very grateful for the gift of the Gross Catholic family and we continue to thank God for all our blessings as we move forward.
Sincerely, Dr. Dorothy A. Ostrowski President |

Academic excellence continued to be achieved last year at Gross Catholic. Ninety eight percent of our graduating class had plans to attend a post-secondary institution. Sixty five percent of the graduating class received scholarships to achieve their post-secondary goals. Our average ACT scores rose over the last three years. Our Academic Decathlon team came in first for small schools. All of these accomplishments have been achieved because of the hard work of our students, staff and administration.
In order to maintain and continually improve our quality academics, the administration is going into classrooms to gather information on the teaching strategies our staff is using to improve instruction. We are using a program called Power Walk Through. This program, supported by our Catholic Schools Office, uses researched based instructional strategies that have been proven to increase student achievement. A team of observers goes into a classroom for 3 - 5 minutes. During the walk through key areas are observed that are proven to increase student achievement. The data is compiled in a database so it can be easily analyzed. This information will help to inform us about professional development needed to continually improve our staff and ultimately increase student achievement. It is our hope that this program will help us to continue building on our tradition of academic excellence.
Sincerely,
John Schultz Principal

As the new Alumni and Communications Director, I really do feel like I am coming home. I am very familiar with Gross Catholic, being a former student and attending events since I graduated in 2005. I am thrilled to be able to help build an even stronger Alumni community with the support of the Cougar family. I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. After four years as a Cougar, my education continued at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where I earned a bachelor's degree in broadcast production with concentrations in marketing, English, and history. I received my diploma in 2009 and returned to Omaha where I took a position with Journal Broadcast Group at the CBS affiliate, KMTV Action 3 News. For three years I served as Marketing Producer, producing daily commercials to promote the station brand. I look forward to an exciting and fulfilling year and I'm happy to give back to a school that gave so much to me. Dux Esto, Ellen Poly '05 Alumni and Communications Director
