Greetings!

We all want to be part of something bigger than ourselves.  Or we want to be better than we are today - a better businessman, a better parent, a better spouse, or maybe even a better golfer.  But how often do we actually commit to doing whatever it takes to make it happen.

Now before you answer that question, stop and think

Are you committed to your goals or do you just think that they would be nice things to have?

Are you really willing to do whatever it takes to make your goals or your vision happen?

The truth of the matter is that most people are only committed to the status quo.  That doesn't mean that they don't want their goals to happen, if by chance they do.  But it does mean they will continue to do what they've always done, and "hope" that they will somehow get different results than they have gotten in their past.

Sound insane???  You better believe it is!

This month's newsletter is all about Commitment.  So, if you continue to struggle with reaching your goals or attaining the things that you say matter most to you, please take a few minutes out of your busy day and read through this newsletter, you may find out something about yourself you didn't realize.

"There's a difference between interest and commitment.

When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstances permit.

When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results."

"What it Takes to be Number One"

This month's video clip is from SimpleTruths.com.    It is a powerful montage of pictures, quotes and audio sound bites of one of the greatest coaches in history, Vince Lombardi.

As a coach, Lombardi's words transcend sports.  They are powerful words of success that apply to all aspects of life - personal and professional.

Watch the video.

Commitment,
Easier Said Than Done

By JJ Reich

According to Webster, commitment is the state or an instance of being obligated or emotionally impelled.

In www.wiktionary.com, commitment is defined as being bound emotionally/intellectually to a course of action or to another person/other persons.

And in his book, The Fifth Discipline, Peter Senge states that someone is committed when they want it, will make it happen and will create whatever "laws" (structures and systems) are needed to do so.

At Impossible Futures, we believe someone is committed to a goal and / or vision, when they are willing to do what ever it takes to make it happen.  But it is important to note that as coaches, we do not judge or rate the commitment of our clients towards their goals or vision - that's not what we are there for.  We simply ask them the question, "Are your actions demonstrating the commitment that you say you have?"  And help them see the truth.

Because when it comes to commitment, saying it isn't enough.
Deeds and actions speak volumes.

Interestingly, when asked, most people will tell you they are committed to their company and its goals and / or vision.  They will tell you that they are doing everything they "can" do to reach the vision - it's just that little things keep getting in the way.

Sound familiar?

In reality, very few people do everything they "can" do, they only do what they are willing to do - they only do what is convenient.  There is a big difference between the two.  And the difference is usually the difference between reaching your goal - or NOT reaching your goal.

To make my point a little more tangible, let me give you a couple of examples that stand out.  Both are from the world of sports, not because they are the only ones that apply, but because most people can relate to them.  But these examples are only a very small sample from a long list of stories where people have overcome very large odds, simply because they did "what ever it took" to reach their goals.

A little over a week ago the professional golf world witnessed commitment to a goal, unlike anything it has ever seen.  Tiger Woods, with a torn ACL and two stress fractures in his knee, played through pain and did "whatever it took" to reach his goal, which he told his doctor when he stated, "I'm playing the U.S. Open, and I'm going to win."  Yes, Tiger has talent that most of us only dream of, but he also has a commitment that is second to none.  It would have been easy for Tiger Woods, with a searing pain ripping through his knee, to bow out of the tournament - no one would have questioned him.  But he didn't, he committed to a goal and made it happen.

Likewise, Jim Collins, author of Good to Great, writes about a Triathlete friend of his that is so committed to eating correctly (because he feels it gives him an edge on race day) that he rinses his cottage cheese in a strainer to wash off the fat.  Does he need to rinse his cottage cheese?  Probably not.  But this Triathlete is so committed to reaching his goals that he wants to make sure he leaves nothing to chance.

Now, you and I are lucky, we don't have to play 91 holes of golf with stress fractures and a torn ligament or rinse our cottage cheese to keep our body fat to a minimum (although the cottage cheese thing would probably help me a bit), but we do need to make sure we are leaving nothing on the table when it comes to reaching our goals.

Are you and your employees doing whatever it takes to reach your company's goals and make the corporate vision vision become a reality?

Are you willing to cut the fat out of your budget?

Are you ready to make more phone calls to prosepective customers, even after you've already heard countless "I'm not interested replies."

Are you willing to make a promise / guarantee to your prospective customers that no one else in your business is willing to make?

Think about it.

These are the questions you have to ask yourself?  Am I and is my staff committed to the goals and the vision of this company or do we just think they are great ideas that would be nice things to have?

This Month's Book Summary

The 8th Habit
From Effectiveness to Greatness
                                                       by Dr. Steven R. Covey

It has been 18 years since Stephen Covey published his seminal work The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which was a hugely impact full book, selling millions of copies around the globe. In that book, Dr. Covey showed us how to become as effective as we possibly could be. In The 8th Habit, he opens up more potential for us all - by moving from "effectiveness to greatness".

The world today is different, with more challenge, ambiguity and complexity and while the 7 Habits form a strong basis from which to start, it is this next step - The 8th Habit -that will take us to true fulfillment in what Covey describes as the age of the knowledge worker.

You see, I am a huge fan of Steven Covey, and have, like many of you, been through 7 Habits of Highly Successful People training.  So when I saw that Steven Covey had written The 8th Habit, I was excited to hear what he had to say. After all, I was convinced that by being "proactive" and "beginning with the end in mind", I was on a path to greatness.  I knew that "putting first things first" and seeking "win-win" solutions was a complete change to my management style.  I tried hard to live by my favorite habit, "seek first to understand, then to be understood", and thought it was the single key to business and personal greatness ever penned.  But Steven Covey knew that "synergy" and "sharpening the saw" rounded out even the most ardent Covey groupie. So I was convinced that the 8th habit was going to be as earth shattering a paradigm change as were the first seven habits. He did not disappoint. . .

In keeping with our theme of commitment, I don't think anyone would argue that to live by and keep the 7 Habits takes a full dose. Certainly, commitment is central to The 8th Habit as well. But as we have stated many times in this newsletter, these habits, as many other business concepts, are simple but not easy. It takes commitment, integrity, and persistence. It takes making these principles habits.

The 8th Habit has two major parts: Find Your Voice and Inspire Others To Find Their Voice. "This two-part solution . . . is a road map for individuals at ANY level of an organization to maximize their fulfillment and influence, become an irreplaceable contributor, and inspire their team and the broader organization to do the same." The first five chapters detail the essence of how to find your own voice. The following chapters describe how to enable others to find theirs.

Face the Truth on your
Level of Commitment to Your Goals

I like to tell my clients that "Your goals drive your actions."  But the truth of the matter is that your what you are committed to drives your actions.

So, when it comes to facing the truth about what we are committed to, its often easiest to look at what we do - not what we say we want.

To accomplish this, all you need to do is a simple exercise for one week.

But remember, what is simple, isn't always easy.

1.  Start an Activity Log - Keep a log / journal of how you spend your time (both at work and during your liesure time) for one week.  Examine how you spend (use) your time.  Try not to change your habits, just because you are keeping a record of them.  Give yourself a full week of doing what you would normally do and keep track.

Get as specific as possible when you are logging how you spend your time.  For example:

   - What do you listen to on the radio when you drive?
   - What did you watch when you vegging in front of the TV?
   - When you read, what are you reading?

2.  Examine how you spend your time - At the end of the week, look at it as objectively as you can and ask yourself the following questions:

   - Did I do anything that leads me to reach my goals?
   - Did I do as much as I could have to reach my goals?
   - What could I have done differently to help me get closer to my goals?
   - Why didn't you do it?

The key here is not to judge yourself harshly, or let anyone else judge you.  It's not a matter of your actions being right or wrong.  It's simply seeing if what you are doing each and every day is helping you get any closer to goals.  And then asking yourself . . .

Is there something that I could be doing different?
