The UFC- Guilt By Association & Programing Disclosure

Guilt

I wish folks would stop slamming Dana White and the UFC.  Give them the credit they deserve and don't for a moment think that anyone else in that position wouldn't shred all it's competitors.  Baseball has a 'legal monopoly' so you don't hear much about any upstart leagues.  The National Football League has constantly stamped out any competitor without mercy and, even still, was nearly brought to it's knees by the old AFL.  Hear anyone coming after the NHL in the states?  Of course not.  So why is everyone complaining about the business model of the UFC?

One man's opinion?  The UFC is like the Star War's 'Evil Empire'. There's no feel good guy at the point of the UFC.  There's only Dana White and he'll keep steamrolling anything that's in his way.  Know any other exec in any other business that goes off on his detractors while 'on the record'? He's created his own image and he did what he felt he needed to do to make the UFC 'king of the hill'.  Yes, Ladies and Gents, thats the same UFC that just scored 1.5million PPVs (at $44.99) and a reported $5MM gate. In other words, I can't imagine that Dana White or the Fertitta Bros really care what you think.  At least right now.

But something feels very different now-a-days, doesn't it.  We've always had Dana White, his opinions and his tantrums. There's more quality fighters available then ever before.  So why do you not have that 'warm-fuzzy' when watching the UFC?  Answer - There's no one fighter, fight or event that gives us the feeling that the UFC isn't a bunch of misquided overage dilinguents.  And, therefore, all MMA gyms, trainers, amateurs and guys that simply train are now being painted by that same 'broad-brushstroke' i.e. we're considered guilty of having these same qualities because we train or fight MMA.

Think about the glory of the old days. Guys like Rich Franklin and Randy Coutoure were the top of the food chain and they had great reputations.  They all had their edge and we loved it.  In fact, even still, they were beyond reproach.  When your 'villians' are guys like Wes Sims, then you've got a quality and appeal that you can't buy, but you can package to a mainstream audience.

What do we have now?  A reality show that appeals to young men with the maturity level of a 'high school freshman' and a new Heavyweight Champion that thinks it's cool to give the finger to the crowd after soundly beating his opponent to gain the title. Oh, wait, there's more.  Did TUF actually sign Kimbo Slice? Yea, that's some quality MMA just waiting to happen!

As you all know, I'm no fan of vanilla and I hate what happened to Martial Arts when gyms became McDojo's, went mainstream, and then whored themselves to a consuming public.  But, it's time for Dana White and the Fertitta's to take a strong look at their 'heavy hand'.  You've made your money and you'll go on making it for a long time to come.  So, I'm begging.  Please, If you're going to pander to the mainstream posers and wannabe's, do the rest of us a favor and put a disclaimer at the begining of each show and after all commercials.  You know, something subtle -Like a hooker on a stripper's pole under a red light (see above).  Is that really too much to ask?

Funkiest Question Of The Month
"What picture do you have for your screen saver"?
Signed....'Freedom Fighter'

This is a first.  I love it that you guys are into my blogs, opinions and our website.  But, a personal glimpse into PrimeTime's 'inner workings'?  Well...OK!  This pic was taken by Fight Force in Montana.  And, why is that pic on my desktop?  Is it because Fight Force is a great customer? (Yes).  Is it because it's a great action shot that shows off PrimeTime Amateur MMA Gloves? (Check). And don't forget, it just looks cool.

August's "What were they thinking"
  1) In Australia, they have manadated 10oz MMA Gloves.  Can you imagine that? They just took away the top two reasons that fighters and fans love MMA-The knockout AND great Jui Jitsu!  Now everytime I get ready to see an Aussie Fighter in the U.S., my feeling is that he'll get his ass kicked because he's used to fighting with pillows on his hands.  C'mon Australia, what happened to that reputation of being so tough.  Your trainers are embarrassed.  What are you thinking?

2) NAGA moving it's Chicago Event To Milwaukee. Reportedly, it's because the Illinois Boxing Commission wanted a grappling tournament to undergo the same requirements as a pro fighter in an MMA event i.e. all the medical board testing etc.  Granted, it's a rookie mistake.  Grappling tournaments, in my mind, are no different than Tae Kwon Do or Karate Tournaments.  They bring in families and have divisions for all ages.  So let's chalk this up as a 'what were you thinking' learning experience and look to bring more Martial Arts tournaments to Illinois.

3) Brock Lesner.  He won the crown just a few weeks ago and people are still shaking their heads.  Do you NEVER want Budweiser to sponsor you?  Are you trying to go back to the WWE?  Get your act together. You've worked hard for this and it's your time.  Don't blow it and....What were you thinking?

4) The UFC is requiring a $100M  'entry fee' and has a banned list for clothing sponsors that will not comply with this policy.  Further, it's rumored, they want a cut of all earnings outside the UFC for fighters under contract.  I don't blame them for going after Affliction or 'selling out' to Century and CSI for their product position on their TV shows. But c'mon.  Keep your eye on the ball.  You go after the little guys in this business and you'll miss the bigger payday as the sport continues to expand.  Greed is only good when you keep growing the pie. Once you go after the 'underground' economy' you'll begin to alienate those that support the UFC's efforts to keep the sport moving forward.  Very shortsighted.  We know what you're thinking and, in the end, I feel you'll regret it.

5) Fedor and Strikeforce.  The world seems to think that Fedor made a bad decision by not signing with the UFC.  But, really, do you guys have to be reminded again and again,  that MMA is big business?  Did ya'll note that M1 (Fedor's manager) will be co-promoting with Strikeforce?  Do you really think Dana White needs M1?  Why would he let the wolf into the henhouse when all they have is 'one trick pony'?  Granted that Fedor's the best Heavyweight in the world, but the UFC has never been a 'one horse' stable.  Just ask Randy Couture.  We know what Fedor, M1 and Coker are thinking.  And they're right.  If a street fighter like Kimbo Slice can become a household name, just think what Strikeforce can do with a legend still in his prime.

Tune in again next month to see what's 'top of mind'.  Ya never know what you'll find, but you can expect to be entertained

Ult Fit N_L Pic

Starting this month we wanted to highlight PrimeTime customers who offer something unique.  There's a lot of gyms out there that look and feel the same day in and day out.  But, there's always that gym that stands a 'cut above' and in Evanston, Illinois that place is Dave Englund's Ultimate Fitness Gym and Evanston Boxing Club.

What makes UltFit so special? It's all about Dave and his ability to attract some of the best instructors in the Midwest while building a 'real gym where any fighter or competitor would be happy to be a member'.  Want a few examples?

First, you have to look at Dave Englund himself.  Dave's boxing training goes back to New York's Gleason Gym.  (Don't know anything about Gleasons?  Then stop reading now and go back to your Tae Kwon Do patterns.) But, Dave is much more than your typical boxing instructor.  He's certified by The Rolf Institute, graduated the Authentic Pilates Program and is certified as a Pilates practitioner and instructor.  He is also certified in Gyrotonic and Gyrokenisis systems.

Want to work on the ground? Jui Jitsu?  Check out Jeff Serafin.  Jeff's trained under Jack McVickers and Megaton Diaz.  He has an extensive BJJ competition record and holds so much hardware that there's no room to list his accomplishments here. As icing on the cake, Jeff's professional MMA record is 4-1.

Muay Thai?  How about working with Rick Sollo's AKAI?  Rick is a fixture in Chicago Muay Thai as he has been training Thai Fighters in Chicagoland for the last 25 years.  Now you can find AKAI at UltFit's Evanston Boxing Club.

Now, you might ask, Mark, is there more?  Well you bet.  Gyrotechnic, Gyrokenisis, Weight Machines, Cardio Room and Pilates.  Everything you need to prepare & train right for your fight and then rehab your self back into shape.

How about he facility?  Each discipline has it's own training room with up to date equipment.  Cage, 'rollin' room full of mats, boxing ring and enough bags to keep you busy for a long while.

Bottom line is that Ultimate Fitness has everything you need regardless of whether you're starting your MMA career or you're ready to go into the UFC.  More interested in weight training and cardio kickboxing?  UltFitness.  Want to train for the Chicago Golden Gloves?  This is the place.  Evanston Boxing Club and Ultimate Fitness.  Here's their link...now go train!!
