I want to invite you to join us December 16 at Pablo Towers for our Christmas event!

Dunn Wellness Center and Nancy Dance studio will once again team up to spread some Christmas cheer with the residents of Pablo Towers assisted living center. During this event we sing Christmas carols, distribute gifts and sweets and put a smile of the faces of some wonderful people!

There are two ways to participate in this event - first you can donate a gift for a resident (gift cards, etc) which we wrap up and handout (no more than a $10 value). The second way is by joining us at the event, December 16, at 6 p.m., and sharing some time with this special group of people!  Thank you in advanced for your help!

Ideal Protein Recipe: Savory Steak with Garlic

RecipeYummy entrée for a holiday meal idea that can be made using an indoor or outdoor grill.

6 cloves garlic , outermost papery skin discarded (leave inner layer)
1 teaspoon grape seed or olive oil
4 (10-ounce) boneless rib-eye steaks , trimmed
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
4 sprigs (4- to 5-inches) rosemary
4 sprigs (4- to 5-inches) savory (thyme or sage also works well)

In a small bowl, drizzle garlic with oil; toss to coat. Place garlic at back of cold Foreman grill. Plug in grill and heat for 10 minutes, or until garlic begins to brown and soften. Turn garlic over once.

Season steaks with salt and pepper. Place rosemary sprig where each steak will be set on grill. Lay steaks over rosemary; top each with savory sprig. Close grill; cook 4 minutes for medium-rare. If grill is small, cook steaks 2 at a time. Place on rimmed baking sheet and keep warm in preheated conventional oven at 200°F.

Remove garlic from grill; set aside to cool slightly. With drip pan underneath, slowly pour water over grill surface to deglaze, scraping with a wooden spoon to loosen brown bits. Set aside drip pan cooking juices.

To make garlic sauce, peel garlic cloves, and then place in a sieve. With a spoon, press garlic through sieve to make a paste; place in a small bowl. Spoon off fat from cooking juices in drip pan; discard. Pour cooking juices over garlic and whisk until well blended. Transfer steaks to warmed serving plates, and then drizzle with garlic sauce.

Alternate preparation: Steaks can also be done on an outdoor grill or stovetop grill pan (though there will not be pan juices for deglazing). Preheat grill. Arrange garlic cloves on a metal skewer; cook over medium heat until tender, about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, grill steaks 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through cooking.

Donate a Teddy Bear!
Bears
BearsThe UNF Men's & Women's Basketball teams are collecting new Teddy Bears to be distributed for children at the local homeless shelters. Many of us have hugged a teddy bear at some time in our lives. Give a child who is going through hard times the chance to cuddle something that can make them feel safe and loved! Bring your teddy bears to Dunn Wellness.

herb Herb of the Month: Sage
Sage
Latin name:

Salvia officinalis

Common Names:

Garden Sage, Meadow Sage, True Sage, Common Sage

This herb has been used throughout the ages and was once thought to be the Savior of mankind (Salvia in Latin means Savior). It was also commonly used in treating several illnesses due to the fact that it was readily available.

Some of the things Sage is useful for are: cough, sore gums, nervous conditions, night sweats, laryngitis, sore throats and expelling worms. Sage is also credited with being a powerful antioxidant because it shrinks inflamed tissues, is antiseptic, and can fight infection of all kinds. This is why you will find Sage in several herbal cough syrups.

It can be used as a poultice for skin irritations, such as insect bites, but is also gentle enough to relax the stomach. With use, the liver may be improved and circulation  stimulated. Sage is also beneficial for mental exhaustion and strengthens the ability to concentrate!

Here are some things to try with Sage:

·  Sage Tea - Pour 1 cup of boiling water over ½ - 1 tsp. of sage; steep for 10 mins.

·  Sage Vinegar - Fill a bottle loosely with sage leaves and add wine vinegar (not distilled)

·Sage Pillow - Fill a small pillow with dried sage leaves for a relaxing sleep

·  Sage Oil - Dilute the essential oil in water or massage oil; never use without diluting

·  Spice- Spread the sage leaves out to dry, but avoid direct sunlight
