Dunn Wellness has Lost 600 lbs!

mainarticle

Dr MarcusIf you look at America today, weight loss is mostly tied to exercise, but that needs to change in the minds of all Americans. The truth is weight loss is mostly controlled by what we eat, not exercise.

Most of us don't examine why we are eating. Do you know why you eat? Some of your answers might include at any given time: you're hungry; you're tired and your stomach is rumbling; you're bored, sad or happy; just because the clock said it is time for a meal, or because that chocolate-covered doughnut looks so good.

When we think about losing weight we think "DIET" which means restricting ourselves until we reach a certain number on the scale and then we likely go back to whatever we did before, thus creating that "Yo-yo" effect.

Thinking about why you eat and why your body needs healthy, good-for-you food, is something we want you to consider on your health journey.  This month, we invite you to attend an informational meeting as we celebrate the LOSS of over 600 pounds through lifestyle changes made through the Dunn Wellness Center.

Really, if you focus on  lifestyle changes vs. "diet", you will not only lose weight but keep it off without trying. Come learn from others.

"If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health." - Hippocrates

Open the Chest!

Ok, so you have been sitting at your desk all day? Spending too much time at the computer?

Holding too many kids all day? Feeling stress in the shoulder / neck area?

Here are a few easy steps toward a stretch that will help counter act all that stress!

*Arrange a few pillows into a small, round hill onto the floor or on a firm mattress, or fold one in half (see figure 1). This can best be accomplished by placing one pillow horizontally on the floor and then another one vertically on top of it.

*Lay on your back over the pillows with bent knees & feet flat on the floor, being careful not to feel too much curvature/strain at the neck. Permit the neck to be supported on the pillows, not hanging off of them. There should not be any strain or discomfort in the neck area due to the pillow arrangement.

*Open your arms to the sides of your body, with elbows bent and thumbs facing downward as if your are hitch hiking to the floor. Hold arms in this position for between 5-10 deep, full
breaths, then rest. Repeat as many times as you would like.

*You should feel a stetch along your chest muscles that may extend into the arms. If your arms "fall alseep" simply place them onto your belly until the tingling stops, and then repeat
the exercise.

HOT TIP: When you exhale open your mouth and make a "ha" sound like you are fogging up a mirror. Feel your breath flow from your head downward past your chest, belly, pelvis, knees and "land" in the feet. Inhale and feel your breath flow from the feet (where you landed) upward to the head.

Have a great month, and as always - keep breathing!

herb Herb of the Month: Chives
chivesChives are a member of the onion, scallion and garlic family and have a history of both medicinal and culinary uses.

Chives were medicinally used in the middle ages for treatment of melancholy. Today we know chives, both the stalks and flowers, are high in Vitamin C, Calcium, Folic Acid, Iron, Potassium. These sulfurous compounds make chives a natural expectorant, helping to relieve mucus and phlegm from the respiratory tract, and are beneficial during allergy and flu season. In addition, chives have wonderful healing properties - easing digestive distress, protecting against heart disease and stroke, as well as being helpful in fighting bacteria. Scientific research has shown that chives stimulate fat digestion, if eaten regularly, which may help to lower cholesterol.

Chives should be routinely used in salads and other recipes that call for a tangy aromatic flavor.  They are also easy to grow and need to be cut often in order to maintain both their flavor and its nutritional properties. The herb can be preserved by either drying (Mix chives with sea salt and bake at 300 degrees until crispy. Remove leaves and store in a airtight container.) or by freezing (Cut chives in small pieces and place in ice cube tray with water. Thaw ice cube in strainer and use). Freezing chives maintains the highest nutritional value.

Chive Flower Oil:
1 ½ oz. chive blossoms
1 quart vegetable oil of your choice (sunflower or safflower are good)
After a week, the oil will turn a pretty lilac and can be used on salads, in dressing recipes and in cooking. Keep refrigerated.

C
hive Dressing:
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
1 cup olive oil
1/3 cup finely chopped fresh chives
2 cloves crushed garlic (or 1 tsp powdered)
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon pepper
pinch dried cilantro
salt to taste
Pour all ingredients into a jar shake vigorously and refrigerate. When cutting chives from the garden, be sure to weed out brown stems and avoid stems upon which flowers have formed (these can be tough). Fresh garlic is better than powdered. Use dressing on all kinds of salad leaves. Keeps for extended periods in the refrigerator.
