Change yourself to change your health

Dr. Marcus Kampfe
In the last newsletter there was a discussion about the meaning behind the words we speak and how those words have an enormous impact on our wellness.

I have another question for reflection this month: What does the word "wellness" mean and look like in your mind?

Wellness for each individual has its own meaning. Poll those closest to you and you will come up with similar ideas, but most likely there will not be a concrete answer. This is where I want to challenge you.

For true wellness to be achieved in an individual life, each person has to desire change. It is also important to recognize that we must be the change we expect to see in others.

Try simply changing your reaction to a situation and you will in turn change the response received from others. Be the example and demonstrate that change can occur.

True wellness challenges us to make the changes we long to see and then leaves us in awe as those around us strive to make changes as well!

Over the next several months we are going on a journey of wellness, exploring each facet from physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects. These are the four aspects that embody what true wellness means at the Dunn Wellness Center. I look forward to experiencing this journey with you!

The Vitamin D Buzz

One of the latest "buzz" topics circling around the medical community is about Vitamin D.

This is due to new research put out by the Vitamin D Council which states that the majority of the population is deficient and not receiving the correct dosages of Vitamin D, more specifically, Vitamin D3.

"Recent research from Johns Hopkins University suggests that higher amounts of vitamin D in your diet decreases your likelihood of dying. Studies found that a vitamin D deficiency increases your risk of death by 26 percent, and vitamin D decreases the mortality rate from almost every type of cancer including breast, colon and prostate. Research also suggests that vitamin D helps prevent diabetes, kidney disease and cardiovascular disease." (Vikki Conwell, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 2/5/2009)

Medical  research also indicates that the right amount of vitamin D will make you faster, stronger, improve your balance and timing, etc. How much it will improve your athletic ability depends on how deficient you are to begin with. How good an athlete you will be depends on your innate ability, training, and dedication.

Many of us are unaware of the correct amount of Vitamin D that we need or how we can increase the Vitamin D levels within our body.

Some ways to increase Vitamin D are through nutrition, sun exposure and supplementation.

Current diseases associated with a lack of Vitamin D include several well known diseases such as juvenile diabetes, hypertension, autism, cancer and inflammation.

The Pointer Stretch
Pointer Stretch

Mom always told you not to point, but this may be the exception to the rule!

If you've experienced dysfunctions such as:  lac
k of coordination, no concept of balance, stuttering, dropping objects, are prone to tripping or have learning disabilities, than this is the stretch for you.

Benefits:

  • reduced stress
  • increased and harmonized energy
  • improved concentration
  • improved whole-brain learning
  • feel more centered and balanced
1. Adjust your pelvis by tilting it either upward or downward until it becomes a neutral plane.
2. Pull your belly button inward (toward your Spine).
3. While breathing normally, extend one leg and the opposite arm at that same time. The motion should be fluid and not rushed.
4. Your body should be in a straight line from the back of the thigh all the way up to the tip of the fingers on the extended arm.
5. Repeat with opposite leg and arm.

This stretch is only a suggestion and you should see a doctor if you are experiencing pain.
