The Nurse Shark

Last week, at a fundraiser for the Philadelphia ALS Foundation, we traveled to Camden, NJ's Adventure Aquarium. Not long into the evening, we were introduced (thankfully, through a large wall of glass) to the "Nurse Shark."

Imagine our surprise to learn that yes, indeed, there is a species of sharks so named.

If you have really good eyes, you'll be able to make out the nurse shark between the non-nurse sharks above!  And if you can't, imagine a 300 lb. shark laying at the bottom of the tank.

New Dosing Instructions for Extra Strength Tylenol

Dosing instructions for Extra Strength Tylenol (500 mg per caplet) have been modified by McNeil Consumer Healthcare.

Adults and children over 12 can take 2 caplets every 6 hours while symptoms last but should take no more than 6 caplets in 24 hours (or 3,000 mg total).

Check with your healthcare provider for your own circumstances or visit the Tylenol website.
And One More Thing....

Though it will clearly not take one minute, if you have not yet addressed an advance directive, please think about completing one this year. Whether you are 18 or 80, it is one of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones.

Well, it's happened again. Another Daylight Savings weekend, another hour lost to the universe. Each year as we "spring ahead," I think of that one hour which comes and goes so easily.

Sleep experts say our own internal clock all of a sudden becomes misaligned with the new time. In fact, many studies report that it takes about five days for our bodies to adjust to the 'new' time.

Time, I think you'll agree, is one of our most precious commodities. Time with our children, with our families, and time for ourselves. Time to "stop and smell the roses." Time to take care of ourselves.

Health is one of our most precious commodities, too. And so this month's issue of The Flame we've joined both time and health and are suggesting that it's about time that you took time for your health. Not a lot, mind you. I'm talking ONE MINUTE or less.  Surely you have one minute for yourself!

In celebration of yet another Daylight Savings hour in the books, read below how you can incorporate some really easy suggestions into your busy life. Make it a great month! And enjoy the extra daylight!!

Got A Minute?

It doesn't always have to take a great deal of time for you to make positive changes for your health.  In these suggestions offered by the Centers for Disease Control, it will take you one minute or less to help protect your health and safety.

Here are a five simple tips to get started:

  • Wash your hands.

Washing your hands has been proven to lower the risk of spreading germs and getting sick. It's best to wash your hands with soap and clean running water for 20 seconds.

  • Protect your skin.

Especially now that you'll be out more in the sun, wear sunscreen, cover up and seek shade to help lower your risk for sunburn and skin cancer. Wear insect repellent with DEET or Picaridin to protect against mosquito and tick bites.

  •   Buckle up.

Make sure everyone in your car, including you, is properly restrained in safety seats or safety belts. Placing children in age and size-appropriate restraint systems lowers the risk of serious and fatal injuries by more than 50%.

And for those 'multi-taskers' out there, stop texting while driving--it is against the law; use a hands-free device if you are using your cell phone and refrain from applying make-up in the car.  Please.

  • Read food labels.

Before you enjoy, take a minute to see how much fat, sugar, and other ingredients (chemicals) are in the product you are about to consume.  Note what the 'standard serving size' is to make sure you don't eat more calories than you think you're getting.

  • Make an appointment.

Whether you need a routine check up or are due for that test you were supposed to have two years ago, don't put it off any longer. Make the appointment now.  OK, sure, it will probably take more than a minute, but aren't you worth every second?
