This Month Find Your Volunteer Passion
Hello Young Leaders!

This month YLS has decided to do things a little differently for volunteerism. Instead of participating in one activity, we encourage you to research and adopt a volunteer activity that connects with your passion and desires.

Nonprofit agencies across El Paso are always actively seeking volunteers to help out with projects. The United Way of El Paso County is home to the area's most detailed volunteer opportunity database, the Volunteer Action Center. At www.volunteerelpaso.org, there are 73 agencies who are actively recruiting both long and short term volunteers. No doubt you will find an opportunity that you are interested in. In fact, there are a couple of opportunities listed on the site that we think that you will be really interested in. Keep reading to learn more about them.

In addition to engaging in volunteering, this month we encourage you to take a look at the different committees that make up the Young Leaders Society. We are seeking dedicated individuals interested in participating on the leadership, networking and volunteering planning committees. Please continue reading to find out how to become more involved behind the scenes in YLS.

Volunteer Opportunity Spotlight

The Lower Dyer Community Block Party

For the past 10 months the Lower Dyer Project and TVP Nonprofit Corporation have been working nonstop to help residents in the Lower Dyer area revitalize their community. Historically the Lower Dyer area has been one associated with low performing schools and low home ownership levels. Since beginning the project last year, reports from the 64-block neighborhood suggest that not only are schools improving drastically, but the area has become safer for its residents.

In celebration of this success, the Lower Dyer Family is planning a Community Block Party on June 27. From 7 am to 3 pm TVP plans to close off Byron Street from Hayes to Pierce. The event planners are seeking volunteers to assist with a number of tasks in support of the celebration including: setup and takedown, assistance with game areas, serving food, and clean up at the end of the event.

If this is a project that you are interested, in please contact Sussette Kenney at 915-887-0899 or visit the
Volunteer Action Center for more information.

Why Do You Volunteer?

"I enjoy volunteering my time as a way to truly grasp the essence of what it means to be a part of a community. My favorite part about volunteering is meeting other members of the community that I may not have met if it were not for volunteering. I have met new friends and mentors all from volunteering my time. "
-- Analisa Cordova, YLS Board Member

We want to know why you volunteer. Send your comments to fhinton@unitedwayelpaso.org !!!

 Turbo Networking Flyer
Volunteer in the Segundo Barrio
In an effort to answer President Obama's call for a national day of health care service, El Paso Grassroots will be hosting a warehouse sale (clothing and miscellaneous items) on Saturday, June 27 from 9am - 5pm. There are two shifts that individuals can volunteer for, 8 am and noon. The warehouse is located at 800 S. Florence, at the corner of Florence and Sixth Street in the Segundo Barrio. Individuals should be prepared to get a little dirty, and wear a mask if they are allergic to dust!

Proceeds from the sale will go to the Baptist Free Clinic which has been providing uninsured El Pasoans in the community with free medical and lab services for 36 years. The clinic does not receive any public funds whatsoever, so any money that is raised will go toward supporting their ongoing efforts to provide these services.

Leadership  Committee

"Leadership is a major component of the Young Leaders Society. The programs developed by the leadership committee strive to engage our members with El Paso leadership. The committee's main focus is to help our members gain insight on the inner workings of our city, and nurture the attributes necessary to assume future leadership roles." The commitee meets the fourth Tuesday of each month. Email Rene Leon to get involved.

Volunteering Committee

"Leading by example is one of the Young Leaders Society's goals for our members, and by serving in our community you will assist organizations and other individuals that may be needing that extra care from others. Your work will truly make a difference for all El Pasoans." The committee meets the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm. Email Martin Munoz to get involved.

Networking Committee

"As young professionals, we all know how important networking is.  Breaking the ice with others can be a daunting task alone.  Regardless of your profession, the Young Leaders Society provides many opportunities to connect with El Paso's young leaders from various backgrounds including, education, health care, military, non-profit, financial, etc." The committee meets the second Monday of each month at 6 pm.
