Welcome to GoodFood WorldFebruary 3, 2012

CowsIf asked, most people could not tell you where the meat on their plate came from. In fact, even if they wanted to know, it would be darned difficult - if not impossible - to find out.

On the other hand, while imagining that the beef they will be eating came from a cow frolicking on lush green pastures, the average American today does NOT want to meet their dinner while it is still standing.

CAFONo, Virginia, not all cows eat grass. That lovely image of a herd of cattle happily munching away and contentedly chewing their cud is mostly a figment of your imagination. Reality is pretty grim.

Where does your meat come from? Do you really know?  Begin here: Grass-Fed vs. Feedlot Beef - What's the difference?

Over the next couple of weeks we will be looking at meat - particularly beef - as part of our diets, our culture, our economy, and our environment.

There's more, keep reading! Get a cup of coffee and join us at GoodFood World, where we get to the source by talking to the people who produce, process, and deliver good food. Take care, eat well, and be well!

GMO Labeling Legislation

In an MSNBC poll taken about a year ago, 96% of 40,000 respondents were strongly in favor of labeling genetically modified foods.
GMO Free Washington
Flash forward a year, and - finally! - the State of Washington is beginning to listen. Two Washington legislators have introduced bipartisan GMO labeling bills in the Washington State House and Senate.

Senator Maralyn Chase (D) and Representative Cary Condotta (R) have put forward nearly identical bills (HB 2637) and (SB 6298) to require labeling of foods that are produced using genetically engineered (GE) materials or genetically modified organisms (GMO).

The bills propose that, by July 2014, all genetically engineered raw foods must be clearly labeled indicating that they have been "produced using genetic engineering processes."

Non GMO LogoGoodFood World strongly supports this legislation and will continue to provide information regarding the introduction, production, marketing and sale of food containing genetically modified organisms. Our mission is to help good people sell their good food products and educate good people to buy, prepare and enjoy good food. And our definition of "good food" does NOT include genetic engineering.

In case you don't remember why it's so important to know what's in the food you eat, take a guided tour through a mythical supermarket and be reminded. Read Welcome to your GMOcery! by Ina Denburg, our Healthy Living correspondent.

Don't get mad, get moving! Here are 10 things you can do about GMOs in the food system.

Not only are consumers concerned, but farmers are too. Read also Kamut International Supports Just Label It Campaign. If grains like GMO wheat are grown in America's bread basket, it could negatively affect all organic farmers. And right now the organic label is our only assurance that food products do not contain GMOs.

She's Back! Lea McEvilly is back at Farm Talk

Lea McEvilly, It's About SheepThis week we welcome our Minnesota shepherdess, Lea McEvilly, back to GoodFood World. After eye surgery in August and hip replacement in December, she is doing fine and back at the keyboard!

In her first Farm Talk installment of 2012 - Voices From the Farm: Not the Best of Times, Not the Worst of Times, but Wearing - Lea says, "There was such a prolonged series of mishaps, accidents, and illness that, at times, it seemed if it were not for bad luck, we would not have had any luck at all!

She starts with a visit to the emergency room with infant son Sean and ends with her own emergency: a broken leg. And the action doesn't slow down in between. Don't miss the story!
The Reading List

All Flesh Is GrassAll Flesh Is Grass, by Gene Logsdon

From about 1947 to 1957 there was a tremendous groundswell in favor of pasture farming, referred to then as grassland farming. Many books were written on the subject. Farm magazines were full of articles singing the praises of grass farming.

The question remains: if grass farming is such a great idea, why did it not become the dominant form of farming by now instead of declining at the end of the 1950s, not to march back into the limelight until the 1990s? Read more here.
