Mercury e-News
Greetings!

I attended high school in the early '80's and during that time experienced the explosion of MTV music videos - big hair, costumes, loud music, etc. Video, it was touted, would kill the radio star. It is a little scary looking back, but we know how it turned out. Video didn't kill the radio star. Instead the two mediums evolved and over time enhanced each other.

This theme has continually been repeated. New technologies would kill "older" ones - color television would replace the movies. The VCR would kill TV. And now, the Internet will trump them all, especially print.

Yet, we are finding print has value and attributes that are not easily replaced by the Internet. Magazines, for example, continue to grow and provide an invaluable resource for your membership or message. They establish an emotional, sometimes personal, bond or relationship between your message/story and the reader - Ultimately, a powerful link to your organization. The Internet, while definitely important, lacks in this area and is not a replacement for print in many ways.

In this issue of Mercury e-News, we detail some interesting facts around the mis-perceptions of the state of magazines and other print products. We hope you enjoy it and as always appreciate your comments.

Sincerely,

Richard Lightfoot

power of print

In the last issue of Mercury e-News, we shared the PrintGrowsTrees campaign challenging the misconceptions of the paper industry. Earlier this year, another equally important campaign was launched and is proceeding full steam ahead.

The Power of Print campaign specifically "
seeks to reshape the broader conversation about magazines, challenge mis-perceptions about the medium's relevancy and longevity, and reinforce magazines' important cultural role". Ads continue to run in over 100 magazines reaching 112 million people per month!

FACTS

What influences young adults

Even though magazine readership in the 18 to 34 range continues to grow, the findings from a recent epsilon marketing study show that young adults in the same range strongly prefer offline marketing to online marketing seem counterintuitive. While it depends on the product that is being marketed, should this influence the methods that you employ to reach this group? As more and more studies come out clearly showing that young adults are far from influenced solely by online methods, it absolutely should help shape and guide your strategy.

Our message - Utilize your magazine and other print products! Again, make sure the content is relevant and the design is clean and modern.

PRESS RELEASE

The Magazine Market

The business magazine market  can be viewed as an indicator and a health check for the state of the association magazine market. For the first nine months of 2010, new magazine launches (176) have outnumbered titles folded (127). In addition, the number of magazines converting from print to digital only has slowed to 26 year-to-date vs. 64 in the same period last year. Advertising is also an important indicator. For the second straight quarter, ad revenue (overall) has posted gains. Click on the link below to see the details.
