Patricia Harden,

Managing Partner, Harden Communications LLC - PR Round Table 2011 Chair

Dear PRRT Members,

With summer flying by, hope you're enjoying it despite the economic and political travails that seem to occur daily. This month I want to remind you what a rare, wonderful opportunity the SF Public Relations Round Table monthly meetings provide for live, in-person conversation with your peers. Plus, we get to hear the inside story and firsthand insights from some of the Bay Area's top communications and media professionals.

PR Round Table luncheon programs present an ideal opportunity to treat your clients, team members or business contacts to a stimulating dialogue on timely issues in a friendly, convivial environment. Not to mention the Michelin-starred cuisine (exceptional desserts) at Campton Place!

Plan now to attend our August luncheon featuring Raymond Ridder, Executive VP of PR for the Golden State Warriors, and bring a colleague or client. It's a fantastic way to make their day - and yours.

Best,

Special Report for PRRT
 Logo.CalForward

CALIFORNIA FORWARD

Trending but not trendy

The rise of social media has set off seismic changes in communication, shifting attitudes and behaviors around how people connect with their networks, consume content and interact with the marketplace.

Social networks are "where people live" and tell us more than we've ever known about what makes people tick.

Facebook and Twitter have created vehicles for direct messaging and a new expectation of timeliness, relevance, transparency, and interactivity.

The implications are profound, especially for PR and marketing.

Organizations acting in the public interest now have an opportunity (perhaps a responsibility) to use social media to spread awareness and give context to their cause. Giving people a voice in the discussion can amplify an organization's message and help it reach its innate potential.

California Forward is working on the cusp of these social media opportunities to create a more transparent, accountable government that's focused on results. We hope you'll join us. Sign up for our mailing list and like us on Facebook to stay on top of California governance reform issues.

The July Program Report

Is San Francisco Open for Business?

The SF Film Commission Sure Thinks So.

by Eric L. Steckel

PR Round Table Board and VP/GM, Bars + Tone

July 28th blog post for

Bars + Tone, A Creative Video Agency

If you thought that shooting a film or ad in San Francisco was too expensive and fraught with red tape, it might be time to think again. At the July Luncheon for PR Round Table, Susannah Greason Robbins, Executive Director of the San Francisco Film Commission, says the city is open for business and eager to reclaim its rightful place as a cinematic destination. As a creative video agency and a fan of the movies, this is exciting news.

According to Greason Robbins, "Filming is up 26% in this past fiscal year. We aim to continue increasing the number of productions that shoot in SF by continuing to find financial incentives which help cut the bottom line for productions. That is why we created the Vendor Discount Program, in addition to the Scene in San Francisco Rebate Program, and added a discount with Virgin America. We want to have productions see San Francisco as a competitive, affordable place to shoot."

But don't just take her word for it. Check out this list of films and A-list talent that have been shooting in our little 77 in just the last year alone:

  • On The Road - A film version the Jack Kerouac novel starring Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart & Viggio Mortenson
  • Big Sur - Another film version of Jack Kerouac writings, recounting several visits the author made to a cabin in Big Sur, starring Josh Lucas, Kate Bosworth & Henry Thomas
  • Rise Of The Planet of the Apes - Starring James Franco & John Lithgow. This is one of a couple films based in San Francisco featuring Mr. Franco. Perhaps he's using his influence to shoot in his favorite city.
  • Contagion - Steven Soderbergh's new film featuring Jude Law, Matt Damon and Gwenyth Paltrow.
  • Hemingway & Gelhorn- An HBO film based on Ernest Hemingway's turbulent marriage with WWII correspondent Martha Gelhourn, starring Clive Owen & Nicole Kidman. It was pointed out that this film in particular included lots of local hiring.
  • Cherry - James Franco, Heather Graham
  • Knife Fight - Starring Rob Lowe, like "Hemingway & Gelhourn" this film shopped local, hiring 60 local crew and lots of extras
  • The Five Year Engagement - Judd Apatow's new film consisted of three camera units shooting over 5 days. That was some pretty intense scheduling.
  • Crime After Crime - This film in particular was noted by Greason Robbins. The director, Yoav Potash, participated in the filmhouse residency program. The film looks at a domestic violence case in which a woman in an abusive relationship has her husband killed by gang members. This documentary was awarded the Audience Choice Award for the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival Official Selection award, will premiere at the Roxie Theater.

So why Shoot in SF?

post film commission talk

Susannah Robbins (2nd/left) with PRRT board members Eric Steckel, Chair Pat Harden & Program Committee Member Mary Currie.

The Film Commission makes it cheaper and easier to shoot here than ever before. Factor in that we boast some fantastic locations and are, to be modest, a world class city, and it becomes a no-brainer. There are several programs that the commission has rolled out to make San Francisco more competitive. The aforementioned rebates provide cash back on fees paid to the City, up to $600,000 per feature film or per television episode. This includes location fees, police and security fees and any number of costs that pertain to a large production. The vendor discount program provides reduced rates on anything from travel and hotel costs to production and catering services. That adds up to budget-conscious producers.

Reflecting recent developments with Twitter's relocation within San Francisco, the commission now offers low-priced office space in the Mid-Market neighborhood. Low-budget filmmakers can apply to lease one of 11 offices as production headquarters. The first tenants came in this summer. Finally, Greason Robbins pointed out that they are a film office that holds the producer's hand and walks them through the process. It's important to remember that good customer service often wins the day.

As a creative video agency specializing in marketing and advertising, I would be remiss not to enquire about the benefits of shooting spots here. While San Francisco doesn't currently have a specific rebate/incentive for marketing/advertising, commercial productions that get a film permit from the film commission are eligible to tap into the discounts that the Vendor Discount offers. So, there's something to go around for everyone.

We encourage you to support films that shoot in San Francisco. We are proud of our city and our contribution to the film community.
