PRRT CHAIR'S COLUMN FOR JUNE
Pat Harden
|
Patricia Harden,
Managing Partner, Harden Communications LLC - PR Round Table 2011 Chair |
Dear PRRT members,
Happy Spring - and summer's on the way - finally! We have some great programs lined up and look forward to seeing you at our lovely meeting spot at Campton Place! Pats on the back this month go to our terrific scholarship committee, chaired by Hatti Hamlin and Eric Steckel for their great job identifying the winners of the five PRRT scholarships awarded at last month's meeting.
Continuing the theme of getting to know your board, I want to recognize PRRT Secretary and long-time supporter, Maureen Knoll, Director of Creative and Communications at Delta Dental. Maureen's sustained involvement and her many, varied contributions to PRRT are nothing short of remarkable. During her first year as a member in 1997, Maureen served on the House Committee and handled the door 23 times that year (she actually remembers this!) because the group then met twice monthly. She's been on the board for more than 12 years, chairing the Membership, Roster and Holiday party committees and serving as Secretary twice. Through Delta Dental, Maureen has contributed the graphic design, web design and printing services of her talented team for many of PRRT's special events and communications.
Why does she stay so active in PRRT? "I have loved serving this group because of the camaraderie with my fellow members, some of whom I have known for 14 years... going to the meetings feel like a family reunion, in a good way!"
After hours, Maureen is an avid fitness enthusiast, an SF Ballet season ticket holder and lover of modern dance, who volunteers for arts organizations including SFMOMA. She also enjoys reading and is currently halfway through Patti Smith's Just Kids, which she highly recommends.
To quote Maureen, "I still feel more of an affinity to PR Round Table than any other organization." The same is true for many of us! The dedication of dynamic members like Maureen is part of what makes our San Francisco Public Relations Round Table such a rewarding experience.
All the Best,
Pat |

PR Round Table Board Member Eric Steckel conducted a drawing of May lunch guests' business cards with artisan chocolates from his friend's Vice Chocolates as the reward.

Words are inadequate. Only a lucky taste will do. We travel in hope of more PRRT drawings for Vice Chocolates.

2011 Philip N. McCombs Scholarships - continued
Hatti and Eric spoke the following introductions the 2011 Scholars were asked to word-smith about themselves.
Taylor Blackburn
University of Pacific/Stockton
Taylor Blackburn refers to public relations as his "Baby Bear Porridge." He says with a smile, "It's just right. I love interacting with people and explaining difficult issues - but most of all, I love to write." While earning his M.A. in Stockton, he made a name for himself both as a student and a teaching assistant. His peers used to call him "Mr. B."
He juggles all this while working full-time for a PR firm in Sacramento. When asked how he does it all, he says, "It's amazing how easy it seems when you love what you're doing."
Natnapang Fai Charoonsri
Golden Gate University
Fai graduated from UC Santa Barbara with bachelor's degrees in both Psychology and Communication. She then moved to San Francisco to pursue a master's degree in Integrated Marketing Communications and Public Relations at Golden Gate University.
At GGU, Fai discovered that PR fits her interests and talents better than she could have imagined. Fai began channeling her enthusiasm for consumer technology and social media into exciting school projects and looks forward to transitioning her skills to a career in tech PR. Outside of her professional pursuits, Fai enjoys a range of hobbies including oil painting, cooking, rock climbing, and furniture restoration.
Bojana Filipovic
Golden State University
All her childhood, Bojana Filipovic dreamt of becoming a journalist. Soon after she was enrolled in the college, she fell in love with Public Relations. She realized that PR was even more interesting, and that it embraced everything she liked: communication, writing, strategic thinking, event planning and creating new ideas. After having worked in the PR industry for over three years in her country of origin, Serbia, she decided to advance in her career and enrolled in the Integrated Marketing Communications program at Golden Gate University.
She likes to read, travel, and meet new people. Today, she is delighted to attend this SFPRRT prestigious event, and receive the award. She appreciate the opportunity to study in the US, and looks forward to be part of the new trends in the PR industry.
Emma Gallagher
University of San Francisco
Emma Gallagher is a 21-year-old recent graduate of the University of San
Francisco. She grew up in Sonoma County and has lived in San Francisco since beginning college four years ago. She majored in Communication Studies, while minoring in Public Relations.
Her involvement throughout her time at USF included serving as President
of the Communication Honors Society, working as a research assistant and submitting multiple papers to research conferences. Emma graduated from USF with honors and is currently working as an Assistant PR/ Brand Manager for R/West, a full service ad and PR agency based out of Portland. In the future she plans to work in the PR industry and hopes to one day be a partner in a large firm.
Minquian Liang
University of the Pacific
Originally from China, Minqian Liang just received her Master's degree at University of the Pacific and is ready to start her PR career. Min was teaching Chinese part-time for 35 undergraduate students at UOP. "I treated my students as my clients; I applied PR knowledge into teaching. It was fun and I learned a lot," she says.
Currently Min is moving to San Francisco and will be working with one of the members of SFPRRT, Paul Matalucci. After establishing career in the Bay Area, she plans to develop some International PR business. To be a PR ambassador between China and America is her career goal.
Many thanks to the 2011 Scholarships Review Committee:

Report on May Program
Re-Envisioning Doyle Drive
Due to his professional responsibilities with the Golden State Warriors, scheduled speaker Raymond Ridder was forced to postpone his PR Round Table lunch program appearance at the last minute. We will reschedule for another time.
Meanwhile, Chair John Goodwin and his fellow Program Committee members worked to connect us with another outstanding speaker on a very timely topic:
Molly Graham
Project Communications Director
for the Presidio Parkway Project
Re-envisioning Doyle Drive
From the Presidio Parkway project web site/blog:
"Doyle Drive has been re-envisioned as the Presidio Parkway - aroadway tucked into the natural contours of the Presidio of San Francisco and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the nation's largest urban parks. The Presidio Parkway will create a spectacular regional gateway between the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and the city of San Francisco. Construction of the Presidio Parkway began in December 2009 and is expected to be complete in 2014."
OUR HERO: Molly Graham (2nd right) with (from left) Brenda Kahn & John Goodwin from Metropolitan Transit Authority, Mary Currie from Golden Gate Bridge Authority and Molly's PRRT connection & Program Introducer, and Sarah Sonn, Molly's lunch guest & CirclePoint colleague.

A colleague reports PRRT's Beverly Butler has entered the field
After PRRT Board Member (and past Chair) Beverly Butler was laid off as head of corporate communications at Fireman's Fund in 2008, she decided she finally had a breather to do a few things she always wanted to do. Like abalone diving, cooking classes, and writing a novel. Well, she got a job at Wells Fargo which put an end to all the free time. But she stayed with her co-author to finish the novel. The result, Meant To Be, was launched in June on Kindle, Nook, e-readers, and Print-On-Demand.
"It's a total vacation fiction; a great beach read. It's about love, marriage, infidelity, and how people can lose touch with the things that are most important. It's serious and funny, with liberal amounts of sex. I started writing the book with a friend--she would develop the story and I would do the writing. It was a blast and now it's ready for the world."
-- Beverly Butler, Author
Meant To Be is available via www.meant-to-be.net in any type of document readers choose, including print. "Beverly warns it's pretty steamy!"
# Despite the competition, a very gracious Tina Fey and her ferret, Jacoby, have never said a bad word about Meant To Be. |

National AP Story on Homeland Security |
Here are some quotes from a story on
SECURITY AT TOURIST ICONS
...
It's always been a challenge to maintain security and public access simultaneously, said Golden Gate Bridge District Spokeswoman Mary Currie.
"We recently had 8,000 Girl Scouts on the bridge," she said. "Do we search the girls' backpacks? No, we have to rely on intelligence. We don't necessarily worry about an individual - one backpack is not going to bring down the bridge."
