Learning from Others or Being an Expert

One of the things that we can model as leaders is that we continue to learn. I have always been impressed with college ministers' continual desire to grow and learn how to do it better. I am indebted to many from whom I have learned along the way. When I first started out, I remember chasing "a famous BSU Director" around a table at the morning break at Glorieta firing questions at him. He was gracious and took time for me.

Who are the "famous college ministers" that we can learn from? I believe that is YOU!  More...

Greetings!

I can't tell you how delighted I am to be back in the Collegiate Ministry Family!  After working for 30 years in Collegiate Ministry, I moved to LifeWay 4 ½ years ago to work in Network Partnerships.  It has been a wonderful blessing to follow God's leadership and to see His hand leading me full circle back into the ministry working with college students.  In this process I have learned so much and am so grateful for lessons I have learned and for the way in which I feel that God made me a better leader for these new responsibilities.  One of things I have continued to sense and feel is that God has chosen some of his choicest ministers to work in the collegiate mission field.  Over the last 4 ½ years, I have worked directly with 14 state conventions and I have seen the diversity of our ministry and the tremendous challenge in both old line and emerging region state conventions.

Now we face a changing landscape that will challenge us to find new and better ways to partner so we can continue to impact this generation with the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  We must dream new dreams and divine new ways to strengthen our commitment to reach our campuses.  Please know of my desire to be a strong leader who both promotes what we are doing and leads us to do what we do in new and even more effective ways.  It is an honor to be associated with all of you.

One of the things I love about this generation of students is their desire to get their hands dirty doing missions. They take very seriously their calling as Christians to impact the world in a positive way.  Helping hear God's calling for practical ways to do missions is a clear part of our calling as Campus Ministers.  One great way to do this is to encourage your students to be a part of the NOW Conference in Nashville April 15-17. I recently visited Bill Collins in his new BCM Center on the campus of Northwestern State University (NSU) in Natchitoches, LA. As he showed me around his office he led me into the conference meeting room. On the walls of this room were pictures of all 20 BCM Presidents he has worked with during his tenure as Director on this campus. He told me the story of each of these former students. All but 2 of them are currently serving in ministry. Many are serving churches here in the United States and several are serving as missionaries in foreign countries. The two that are not in ministry are actively involved lay leaders in their churches.  Across the room on another wall were pictures of hundreds of students that served on mission trips while students at NSU. This room is a reflection of what is going on in Campus Ministry around the country.

Our ministry involves students coming to know Christ personally and then understanding that they have the responsibility to become active church leaders who are sharing their faith with others. Thank you for your commitment to reach, grow and send your students. Only heaven knows the far reaching impact of your ministry.

Building a Healthy Leadership Team:
3 Kinds of Students

Every campus minister has struggled, at one time or another, with finding and keeping good student leadership.  This is so important to those of us who work with student-led organizations. Because of the nature of our organizations, we are welcoming to all students, which is both a good and bad thing.  It's good in that we affirm the value of everyone before God.  It can be a challenge if we allow students to fill leadership roles, who are not ready or capable of filling them.

While I would never contend that there is only one way of evaluating student potential, the three categories below have helped me through the years to better understand the students who have journeyed through ministries of which I have been a part. (read more)

At Collegiate Week, college students are discipled and immersed in biblical teaching just before the fall semester begins. As we pour into students they are encouraged to go home and impact their campuses for Christ.
Leaders love Collegiate Week, too! As a training event for leaders, you'll have a great opportunity to network, share experiences, and continue learning how to reach college students in your community and on your campus.
Meet us in beautiful Glorieta, NM to relax in the mountains and reconnect with your students before the craziness of the fall semester begins.
Date: August 7-12, 2011
Location: Glorieta, New Mexico (only location)
