Dear NCCC Member:
HELLO!!  In this electronic newsletter we have a reprint of the original published article from the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) magazine, COPING, that is an excellent overview of our organization.
You will also find information on Julia Sweeney from Saturday Night LIVE and a cervical cancer survivor, who will be an amazing Guest Speaker at our upcoming NCCC conference this October 8, 9 and 10th in Chicago, Ill.
You can also read about upcoming events some of our 16 Chapters are holding nationwide and find out about our newest Chapter in the state of Maryland.
We are excited about the FDA's Advisory Panel recommending a new vaccine for approval in the USA to fight cervical cancer and are glad the same panel is recommending to the FDA to enhance the recommendation on the current FDA approved vaccine to vaccinate young boys and men too against genital warts.
YOUR ongoing caring about issues related to all cancers, including cervical cancer and HPV related cancers is helpful in motivating our many volunteers and continued efforts in our core mission to help family members and friends battle the personal issues related to cervical cancer and HPV.
We are here to help thousands of families navigate the HPV and cervical cancer maze.
Please know, we are here for you.  Your support is essential and your desire to be part of the NCCC is appreciated. YOU ROCK!!!
We look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming NCCC conference in Chicago this October.

The National Cervical Cancer Coalition/HPV Cancer Coalition (NCCC) is a grassroots nonprofit organization helping women, family members, and friends battle the personal issues related to cervical cancer and HPV (human papillomavirus) disease. The NCCC has expanded its core mission to include helping both women and men who battle issues related to all HPV cancers; therefore, the NCCC is also called the HPV Cancer Coalition.
NCCC programs include the NCCC's Web site,, and its interactive cervical cancer/HPV online community. Further programs include the cervical cancer/HPV quilts project, which travels worldwide to help provide a personal face to the devastation cervical cancer and HPV can cause. Furthermore, the NCCC has a Survivor section that allows its members to share their cancer stories. And the NCCC Phone/Email Pals program matches people battling cancer with other members who are coping with the same type and stage of cervical or HPV-related cancer.
The NCCC holds an annual three-day conference that provides interactive discussions, empowering attendees by providing current information related to cancer in a friendly and supportive environment. Its upcoming conference, HPV, Cancer and You: Relationships Matter, October 8-10, 2009, in Chicago, IL, will focus on connecting women, family members, caregivers, and clinicians with one another to build new relationships that matter. Often, cancer can make a person feel alone and isolated. At this conference, attendees will learn updated information about cervical cancer and HPV, as well as have the opportunity to build new relationships. Clinicians who attend will gain insight into the unique needs of people with cervical cancer and HPV and a better understanding of the emotional burden and stigma that comes with having a cancer that is connected with a sexually transmitted infection, such as HPV.
To help reach out nationwide, the NCCC has a Toolkit for its members that gives them the tools they need to communicate the message that cervical cancer is largely a preventable cancer through HPV vaccination, regular Pap testing, and HPV testing when recommended.
As designated by the United States government, January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, and the NCCC provides free posters that promote Cervical Health Awareness, which can be posted locally, reminding people of the importance of prevention and early detection.
NCCC is also supportive of the free Pap test day, which occurs on the second Friday in January, encouraging healthcare providers to offer a free Pap test or HPV test to any woman who has not had a Pap test or HPV test in three years.

NCCC Members-Raising Awareness
Meghan Leonhardt and her friend, Jennifer Chitiv, held a bake sale for the NCCC two weekends this year at local grocery stores. The girls sold bracelets, bake goods, ice pops and chocolate lollypops to raise money for the NCCC. The girls decided to pick the NCCC because over this past year, cervical cancer has been a big part of Meghan's family and her life. Meghan's aunt didn't go to the doctor for her annual visits. When precancerous cells were found in her cervix, the doctors were able to catch it. Meghan knows that a lot of people aren't so lucky, and that with regular testing, cervical cancer can be prevented. Meghan and Jennifer hope they can spread the word and help save lives.
Katharine Hoffmann, NCCC PA Chapter Leader, participated in a walk on Sunday, September 13th in Pennsylvania to raise awareness and money for cervical cancer. Katharine had a table with NCCC information and facts on cervical cancer and HPV. Money raised from the event will go towards the NCCC PA Chapter.

Michelle Whitlock, NCCC TN Chapter Leader, participated in the Nashville Sounds Baseball Purity Charity of the Night program. The Nashville Sounds and Purity Dairies want to recognize an area charitable organization at every Nashville Sounds home game this season and the NCCC-TN Chapter was picked for this great program. The NCCC had the opportunity to have a presence at the ballpark for purposes of educating Sounds fans about the NCCC and increasing awareness about HPV and cervical cancer. The NCCC had a booth on the main concourse to display promotional literature about the NCCC, collect donations, and distribute promotional materials. In addition the NCCC was  recognized on the scoreboard, had 2 (:15) second public address announcements to promote the NCCC and have a representative from the NCCC throw out a ceremonial first pitch before the Sounds game.
