Selected by American Libraries editors, click here to see the Top Ten Library Stories of 2011!

#2 on their list is Occupying Libraries:

"2. Occupying Libraries: Guerrilla libraries sprang up in the numerous camps of the Occupy movement, most notably in Zuccotti Park in New York City, where Occupy Wall Street protesters set up the People's Library. By the time police cleared the park on November 15, it held more than 5,500 volumes, showing that information is an essential ingredient to any community, however temporary." Read the rest of the Top Ten here!

Websites of Note...
Each month, we add a dozen or so new records to our premier product, CassidyCat's Digital Law Library.

These are a few of the newest sites being added to the collection:

"Can anything of academic value ever be said in just 140 characters?" The London School of Economics Public Policy Group provides the (affirmative) answer in its new guide, "Using Twitter in University Research, Teaching and Impact activities: A guide for Academics and Researchers."

A December 2011 Congressional Research Report entitled, "Governmental Tracking of Cell Phones and

Vehicles: The Confluence of Privacy, Technology, and Law," considers governmental tracking in light of the Fourth Amendment.

PolitiFact is an independent, nonpartisan, Pulitzer-Prize winning site that examines the veracity of political claims on its Truth-O-Meter, ranging from "True" all the way to "Pants-on-Fire"! The site also puts campaign promises to the test, on its Obameter and GOP Pledge-O-Meter. A great resource during primary and election season!

Happy New Year!

Greetings everyone and Happy 2012!

First thing's first - with your help, we were able to contribute $2,725 this holiday season to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey! Thank you to everyone who contacted us about placing an order in the timeframe to boost the contribution!

2011 was a very productive year here at Cassidy headquarters. Some of the record sets we made available last year include:
  • WestlawNext
  • W.S. Hein's World Constitutions Illustrated File 2
  • W.S. Hein's World Constitutions Illustrated File 3
  • Wolters Kluwer's KluwerArbitration eBooks
  • HeinOnline's Kluwer Law International Journals (enhanced)
  • HeinOnline's American Indian Law Collection
  • HeinOnline's Pentagon Papers
  • Lexis ALM (American Lawyer Media)
  • American Lawyer Media platform
On top of these new record sets, we have also strengthened our Shelf-Ready department to help any libraries that may need technical services help on a temporary or indefinite basis.

We have begun modifying some of our HeinOnline records to what we are calling PNR-Enhanced records. See the article below for more information on what this means.

We are going to continue to work hard for you in 2012, creating full MARC21 records for new collections and continuing to update all sets to keep your catalogs up to date and accurate!

Have a wonderful rest-of-January,

Natalie and the crew at Cassidy Cataloguing

What is PNR-Enhanced?

Records created following the guidelines of Provider-Neutral and those created under the rules of AACR2 each have their pros and cons.

Provider-Neutral records reflect the date of original publication in the Fixed Fields and the 260 Field, but does not allow for 490/830 Series Statements.

AACR2 records include Series Statements but reflect the date of creation of the electronic product which can be misleading in a catalog display.

When we merged all of our records, some of the PNR records were merged onto AACR2 records, losing that valuable original publication date information in the Fixed Fields.

To solve this issue, and create a record which encompasses the most popular customizations, we have created what we call PNR-Enhanced records.

PNR-Enhanced Records are essentially modified PNR records. We have utilized the 264 field to house the electronic product publication information and moved the original publication information into the 260. We adjusted the original date and state of publication in the 008 Fixed Field and removed the 538 and 506 notes. Also, we have added 490/830 series notes back into the record.

Please see the sample record for a clearer picture of a PNR-Enhanced Record.
