Last month, we gave you some ideas of what to do with your old books in a non-literary way from the folks at Neatorama.
This month, we found a very interesting case study performed by the Metadata & Cataloging Department at North Carolina State College Libraries to compare the use rates of records for digital images which were 'enhanced' with information versus those which were unenhanced.
"Findings indicate that manual metadata enhancements greatly increase the use of our digital image collections. Enhanced images accounted for quadruple the amount of use as unenhanced images. Out of all the collection's unique page views combined, 80% of page views were of enhanced images and only 20% were of unenhanced images. Ninety-two percent of unenhanced images had yet to have a single page view after five and a half months. After the same period of time, enhanced images had been viewed at least once at a rate three times that of unenhanced images."

Cassidy Cataloguing's president, Joni Cassidy, has been teaching Cataloging and Introductory Technical Services in New York metro-area library schools for many years. In that capacity, and as founder of Cassidy Cataloguing, she and the professional staff have had the opportunity to mentor many students into a career in librarianship. We believe it is one of the things that sets us apart from any other catalog-record provider. Zoraida Michaud (below: Zoraida and her son, Thomas) "I met Joni more than 20 years ago when I was a student at Hunter College of CUNY. My best friend, Karen Valinoti, and I vie for the title of 'First Employee of Cassidy Cataloguing' due to a tax technicality. All through college, Karen, Joni and I worked together as a traveling technical services department for law firms and corporate legal departments all over New York City. I consider Joni and Michael Cassidy to be my accidental mentors. After college, they offered me a full-time position with Cassidy Cataloguing Services. Truth be told, I did not set out to be a Librarian. I majored in Sociology as an undergrad and later took an advanced degree in Art History. Neither of those careers seemed to suit me in the end. Although cataloguing was not the concentration I followed in my career as a Librarian, I owe a great debt to Joni and Michael for supporting me in my choices. My years of experience working in law libraries for Cassidy Cataloguing jump-started my career as a Legal Researcher. I attended Pratt Institute where I earned my MLS in 1998. I specialized in Law Librarianship and found that this was a good niche for me. I am now a Solo librarian / CLE Coordinator for a midsize firm in Florham Park, New Jersey and even though my days are long, I love what I do and I thrive in an environment where every day brings a new challenge. Having a library degree has meant that I could have a job anywhere I lived and not just as a Law Librarian. I've also worked as a Business Information Specialist for Fortune and Money magazines, a Fact Checker for InTouch magazine, and a Reference Librarian at Kean University. In an age where people are redefining their job titles to appeal to these digital times, I still refer to myself as a Librarian. It is not an old-fashioned vision or attitude. Being a Librarian is an admirable profession and one that I'm happy to have been introduced to by Joni Cassidy and Cassidy Cataloguing Services, Inc."
Zoraida is married to Jon Michaud, the Head Librarian for The New Yorker magazine. Jon recently published his first novel, 'When Tito Loved Clara', an elegantly written tale of the Dominican immigrant experience set against the backdrop of Inwood, New York City. He will be featured as "A First Author" on a panel at the upcoming American Library Association annual meeting in New Orleans. |
