World Constitutions Illustrated by W. S. Hein
Launch Pad Spotlight
AALL 2010

We made it back to New Jersey after a very busy AALL conference in Denver!  Thank you to everyone who came out and visited us!  Also, a big thank you to those who attended the TS-SIS Hot Topic Program: New Faces of Resource Sharing - SkyRiver and USS, Just to Name Two!, moderated by Joni Cassidy.  We hope you all had a great time in the Mile-High City!

Joni Cassidy was also busy giving PowerPoint presentations at the W.S. Hein booth and Westlaw theater.

  • The presentation at W.S. Hein's booth focused on Catalog Records for their World Constitutions Illustrated database.  Information about this collection of information available from W.S. Hein is available here.  As requested, the World Constitutions Catalog Records PowerPoint presentation is now available to view.  See below for more information regarding Cassidy's cataloging of W.S. Hein's World Constitutions Illustrated.
  • The presentation at the Westlaw Theater focused on WestlawNext and how catalog records will be constructed to accommodate the change.  The WestlawNext Catalog Records PowerPoint presentation is also now available to view.

SkyRiver vs. OCLC
As you have probably heard by now, SkyRiver has filed an antitrust lawsuit against OCLC. If you are interested in reading more about this suit, you may find the following links helpful:

Searching Tip
We were very excited to learn that an A-Z
Title list has recently been added to Wolters Kluwer's IntelliConnect database!  We did want to give you a tip while searching... if you don't find the title you are looking for while browsing in the A-Z list, be sure that there is no initial article "THE". In some cases, they don't appear to have been indexed with the initial article removed. (Or you can just search using the IntelliConnect catalog records from within your catalog!)

Just an example:

World Constitutions Illustrated
1,775 full MARC21 catalog records for only $1,079.00?  What about $225.00?
It is possible - just by saying "yes"!

W.S. Hein is offering a complimentary subscription of World Constitutions Illustrated to all subscribers of their Core collection for as long as the Core subscription is maintained.  Cassidy Cataloguing has partnered with W.S. Hein to create full-MARC21 catalog records which will match these titles!

Cataloging has already begun on these MARC21 catalog records, which follow Provider-Neutral guidelines. The records are being created for the Constitutions and Books as well as all the websites and other electronic resources such as "Country Reports on Human Rights Practices" and "Background Notes".

The pricing model for this collection will follow a structure that is based upon the volume of interest in the set, a model that is very similar to our Pioneer Program for the original WestLex.  If only 101 libraries say "yes" to having these catalog records, the price for 1,775 records will only be $1,079.00! (That's about $.60 per record!) If all 600 libraries say "yes" the price drops to only $225.00 per library!
We thank all of the libraries who have already contacted us to express interest and assure you that you are counted in the final headcount!

We will begin the pricing structure by asking that initial subscribers declare themselves in order to aid in a headcount.  Initial subscribers would then be invoiced according to the schedule below and will be offered premiums that those who had not subscribed to the pioneer project will not be offered. These premiums may include free updates and discounts on future collections added to World Constitution Illustrated.

More information will be delivered shortly on this collection.

Cassidy Cataloguing's president, Joni Cassidy, has been teaching Cataloging and Introductory Technical Services in New York metro-area library schools for many years.  In that capacity, she and the professional staff of Cassidy Cataloguing have had the opportunity to inspire several graduate students to pursue a career in Technical Services. We believe it is one of the things that sets us apart from any other catalog-record provider.

Mark Sandford

Mark SandfordMark first met Joni when he took Introduction to Cataloging with her at Long Island University's Palmer School of Library and Information Science.  By the end of the course, Joni had derailed Mark's plans to specialize in public librarianship, and he instead focused on Technical Services and Cataloging.

Joni took Mark on as an intern at the end of his Masters program.  At Cassidy Cataloguing, Mark expanded his knowledge of cataloging beyond print materials when he worked with Joni on a pro bono project cataloging videos at the Ziccolella Elementary-Middle School in Hastings On Hudson, New York.  He also cataloged legal websites for CassidyCat's Digital Law Library.

Mark credits his internship for helping him get his first position as a part-time media cataloger at a public library, as well as for his current position at the William Paterson University of New Jersey.  The skills he learned from Joni and the excellent Cassidy Cataloguing staff made him a perfect fit as their Special Formats Cataloger.

Since then, Mark has worked with Joni co-teaching courses at Kean University and Queens College, as well as workshops for the Connecticut Library Consortium.
