Greetings everyone,
Thank you to all of you who visited us at SEAALL's annual meeting and conference this year. It was a lot of fun and a great turn out!
We held a contest in honor of our 25th year anniversary and gave away a few prizes at the conference, but we just pulled the winner of our grand prize.
The winner of the $50 Visa Gift Card is Sharon Bradley of University of Georgia!
Congratulations, Sharon!
Cassidy Cataloguing will be at this years AALL conference in Denver, and, like last year, we will be making appearances at various booths throughout the conference including Thomson Reuters Legal. We will soon have a schedule announced.
This month's newsletter premieres a new section called "Launch Pad Spotlight". One of the things that sets us apart from other catalog-record providers is that our staff gives back to the library community in many ways. Jump down to the section below called "Launch Pad Spotlight" for more information about a student who was inspired to pursue a career in technical services.
As always, don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, suggestions or would just like general information about what we do!
Best regards,
The Crew at Cassidy Cataloguing

Each month we would like to showcase an interesting law library related article found online. Last month we learned that Yale Law School was archiving bobbleheads.
This month we bring you via Improv Everywhere:
Who you gonna call?... Ghostbusters!
"The New York Public Library approached us about a month ago and asked if
we would want to stage an Improv Everywhere mission on their property.
The library is facing serious budget cuts, and they thought having us
do something awesome there might serve to remind people of how great the
NYPL is. We couldn't say no to the opportunity to do something in
their gorgeous, 100 year-old Rose Main Reading Room..." Read More
If you don't know about Improv Everywhere, poke around on their website from the link above. They have done some interesting things!!

World Constitutions Illustrated We are proud to have been chosen to create the MARC21 catalog records for the first 1,775 titles issued in W. S. Hein's new World Constitutions Illustrated.
The MARC21 catalog records, following Provider-Neutral guidelines will be created for the Constitutions, Books and Periodicals as well as all the websites and other electronic resources such as "Country Reports on Human Rights Practices" and "ConstitutionMaking.org"
The pricing model for this collection will follow a structure that is based upon the volume of interest in the set, a model that is very similar to our Pioneer Program for the original WestLex.
We will begin the pricing structure by asking that initial subscribers declare themselves in order to aid in a headcount. Initial subscribers would then be invoiced according to the schedule below and will be offered premiums that those who had not subscribed to the pioneer project will not be offered. These premiums may include free updates and discounts on future collections added to World Constitution Illustrated.
Those libraries that subscribe after the initial headcount period will pay a higher price than those that were involved in the pioneer project.
Click here for more information and a detailed pricing schedule
More information will be delivered shortly on this collection.
HeinOnline's Bar Journals and Law Journal Library The MARC21 records for HeinOnline's Bar Journals and Law Journal Libraryare now available for purchase as Aggregator-Neutral records in addition to the AACR2 version.
The Law Journal Library contains journals from the collections of Criminal Justice Journals, American Bar Association Journals, US Core Journals, International Journals and Intellectual Property Journals. This collections consists of over 1,500 records for these journals.
The Bar Journals Library contains over 1 Million pages of fully-searchable Bar Journal articles through HeinOnline. For more information on this collection, click here.

July is rapidly approaching and that means the AALL 2010 conference in Denver is right around the corner! Joni Cassidy will be at the conference this year and will be available for questions in different locations, much like last year's schedule. To date, she will be in the Thomson Reuters Legal booth, but more information will be coming in next month's newsletters for times and other booth locations.
Joni is also moderating the AALL TS-SIS Hot Topic Program: New Faces of Resource-Sharing: SkyRiver and USS, just to name two! Sunday, July 11, 2010, 12:00-1:15p.m., CCC-Room 109 Speakers: Leslie Strauss, President, SkyRiver Nancy Fleck, Librarian, Michigan State University Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Exec. Director, New England Law Library Consortium (NELLCO) Target Audience: Academic, Government, Firm Technical Services Librarians Program Description: The creative team from Innovative Interfaces has introduced a new bibliographic utility, www.theskyriver.com, to compete with OCLC and, once again, offer libraries a choice for cooperative cataloging. The New England Law Library Consortium (NELLCO) has developed the Universal Search Solution - USS - a master index of material, including participating library OPACs, web-based free and subscription-based material, local electronic content and other e-content that its participating libraries wishes to make discoverable to researchers. The USS can also be used as an acquisition and copy cataloging tool. It's not your Mama's bibliographic landscape anymore!

Cassidy Cataloguing's president, Joni Cassidy, has been teaching Cataloging and Introductory Technical Services in New York metro-area library schools for many years. In that capacity, she and the professional staff of Cassidy Cataloguing have had the opportunity to inspire several graduate students to pursue a career in Technical Services. We believe it is one of the things that sets us apart from any other catalog-record provider.
Melissa Resnick
Melissa was a beginning M.L.S. student enrolled in the "Intro to Technical Services" course that Joni was teaching at Queens College when they met. The first night of class, Joni got her guide-dog "Alta" in trouble because she kept making eye-contact with her thus distracting her from her responsibility of watching over Melissa. Melissa made a special allowance for Joni and she could visit with Alta before class each week while exchanging dog-tales with her owner.
It didn't take long for Joni to notice that Melissa excelled at organization and classification. She encouraged her interest in Cataloging and was so happy to provide a Letter of Recommendation for her when she applied for a post-M.L.S. Associate Fellowship at the National Library of Medicine.
After completing the two year Associate Fellowship, Melissa was selected to receive a Research Fellowship in the NLM's Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, where she is currently developing medical ontologies. Below is the abstract of her research:
An Ontology for Public Health to Support Enhanced Information Retrieval Melissa P. Resnick, M.L.S., Anna M. Ripple, M.L.S., Ione Auston, M.L.S., Thomas C. Rindflesch, Ph.D. National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD 20894
ABSTRACT
Semantic MEDLINE [1] is an advanced information management technology that helps Manage the results of PubMed searches using natural language processing, automatic
summarization, and visualization. The application depends on the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), which is largely limited to clinical information. We are constructing an ontology for public health to allow Semantic MEDLINE to be used in that domain.
The three important themes of public health are: Assessment, Development, and Assurance.
Assessment monitors the health of communities to identify problems and priorities. Development implements programs to solve these problems, and Assurance determines whether implemented programs are effective. These core themes guide research on extending the UMLS to public health. Presently, Melissa is also continuing her academic studies, and looking forward toward a Ph.D. in Clinical Informatics / Knowledge Representation.
