April 2010 News
Greetings!

Did you know that Cassidy Cataloguing Services is turning 25 years old this year?!

In 1985, Cassidy Cataloguing Services had two employees, Joni Cassidy, its Founder and President, and one part-time clerk-typist.  Catalog card sets were typed on an electronic typewriter. That's an electric typewriter with a small memory. Cards, pockets and spine labels were typed onsite on a Selectric typewriter. Joni was the staff Cataloger for New York County Lawyers Association (the downtown bar association), and a contract cataloger for two law firms and a corporate legal department.

One of Cassidy Cataloguing's 1985 clients, the law firm of Windels Marx Davies and Ives is still a client today as Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf LLP.  The same terrific Law Librarian, Joel Solomon, is still there.

Joni and Michael Cassidy were living in Astoria, Queens until October 1985 when they bought a house in Scotch-Irish Kearny, NJ, famous for its fish-and-chips.  At the end of every work-week, Paula, Joni and Michael planned to meet for "Spontaneous Friday."

Paula Perry, Senior Metadata Quality Control Supervisor, was working as the Technical Services Librarian at the Wall Street law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell.  One of her responsibilities was the care and feeding of all the computer equipment in the library, plus the dedicated Lexis UBIQ terminals or Westlaw WALT terminals that sat on the lawyers' desks.  The most common solution when they stopped working was to ask if the lawyer or the cleaning people had kicked the plug out of the wall!

Susan Summers, Customer Success Supervisor for Electronic Products, was in her first year of graduate school at the University of Illinois, studying lighting design for theatre. Who would have ever guessed that after completing her Master's degree and then teaching for several years, she would ultimately end up at Cassidy for the past 15 years! (She still dabbles in theatre, designing lighting for one or two productions yearly!)

Donna Rosinski-Kauz, Senior Metadata Specialist and Software Training Specialist, was in college, studying anthropology and psychology, and working as a page and interlibrary loan clerk in the Hillman Library at the University of Pittsburgh.

Qing Fan, Senior Metadata Specialist, was living in China at Hefei United University, studying library and information science.

Edward Graham, Customer Success Supervisor for Onsite Projects & Copyright Issues Specialist, was attending Suffolk County Community College on Long Island.  The goal at the time was to get an Associate's Degree and use it as a stepping stone to gain admission to SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music.

Natalie Bejarano, Chief Marketing Officer and Projects Coordinator, was in 1st grade at Mansfield Elementary School, Mansfield, NJ.

Jennifer Lisman, Metadata Specialist, was 13 and trudging into 7th grade.

Megan Babbitt, Facilities Manager, was not yet born!

About Us
We saw it on the internet!
Each month we would like to showcase an interesting law library related article found online.
Last month we found a Law librarian who makes a legal fashion statement in Fayette.

This month we bring you via the New York Times:

Relax, Legal Scholars: Bobbleheads Are Safe at YaleChief Justice Rehnquist

"The oldest item in Yale Law School's rare book collection is a 1,000-year-old fragment of a medieval manuscript bound inside an Italian guidebook for notaries.  The newest is a bobblehead doll depicting William H. Rehnquist, 16th chief justice of the United States."  Read more...

(As an aside, Cassidy Cataloguing contacted the Lillian Goldman Law Library to offer our Supreme Court Justice cut-out dolls to their collection, but, of course, the dolls were already in their collection!)

Skyriver: Could it be a Contender?
Read our latest article, posted on David Badertscher's Criminal Law Library Blog on newcomer SkyRiver and what it could mean to your library.

"Imagine for a moment the opportunity to contribute your institution's bibliographic records to a spanking clean utility committed to high quality and little to no duplication. SkyRiver could offer that to the law library community, and the chance to be the foundation for a NEW interlibrary loan network based on our own subject specialty: Law..." (Read the full article)
