Children of Hope: The Liberia Mission Story

Greetings!

This week, we are pleased to present A Woman's Place: Part 3  - a world premiere exclusive of the new Liberia Mission documentary series - Children of Hope: The Liberia Mission Story.

A Woman's Place: Part 3 tells the story of Serliae Johnson.  Like Handful, Serliae was one of the first students to be taken in by Liberia Mission, Inc. after suffering the loss of her parents.  Serliae has a love for singing and dreams of becoming a doctor one day.  She was also recently elected vice-president of St. Anthony of Padua School - the first female elected to that position.  Serliae also talks about her love for "Momma" Helena Gonyon, a House Mother at Liberia Mission who always dreamed that she would have the opportunity to help Liberia's war-orphaned children.  Serliae's story helps explore the unique opportunities women have in Liberian society - especially women with a first-rate education - following the lead of their President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf - the first woman President in Africa.  Click on the picture below to watch and learn more!

MassMass of Dedication and Blessing Celebrated at Liberia Mission!

On February 24th, Coadjutor Archbishop Lewis Jerome Zeigler and LMI_Mass_EntranceMonsignor Andrew Karnley from the Archdiocese of Monrovia celebrated a Mass of dedication and blessing at our Liberia Mission church, Saint Michael The Archangel.  Fr. Don Halpin, OFM Conv., Spiritual Advisor to MHI / LMI who visited Liberia Mission for the month of February, con-celebrated the Mass with Archbishop Zeigler and Msgr. Karnley.

Before the Mass began, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to signify healing and rebirth at Liberia Mission - a truly powerful experience for all.  The Church was packed with people for the beautiful celebration, filled with song and dance and prayer!  During the Mass, the Archbishop confirmed twenty-five of our students in the Catholic faith.  At the end of Mass, many people offered personal remarks and Monsignor Karnley shared these words:

"Liberia Mission Incorporated is the greatest thing to happen to Liberia since the end of the second civil war in 2003.  There is simply no other way to state it.  Its impact on the past, its impact now, and its impact in the future cannot be over stated... We are a blessed country because of this mission."

Special thanks to all of YOU who make this possible!  Your support of prayers, time, talent, and treasure is making an unparalleled difference in the lives of so many in Liberia.  You are truly helping to build a brighter future for children, families, communities, and a country.  God Bless You!
LentConnect with Liberia Mission this Lent

This Lent, there are many ways that you and your family can build a deeper connection to Liberia Mission and to those people around the world who are striving for a brighter future.  Below are several ideas:
  • Pray for the children of Liberia Mission, for all children, and for peace throughout the world.
  • Host a simple supper.  Invite people to donate what they would have spent by going out to eat.
  • Sponsor a child, or write a letter to your sponsor child and email it to us.
  • Learn more about Liberia, its history, connection to the U.S., and its culture.
  • Invite your faith-sharing group to get involved by praying, fasting, or giving this Lent.
  • Suggest to your book club that you read a book about Liberia or West Africa.
  • Host a movie night.  Here are several films about Liberia or watch the Children of Hope series.
  • Other ideas?  Let us know your ideas or what you plan to do this Lent!
HondurasVolunteer Group Opportunities in Honduras!

Providing opportunities for volunteer groups to experience and be changed by the children of Honduras has always been an important part of the mission and ministry of Mission Honduras International.  We have heard from many of you that you would like to continue taking your group to Honduras.

Honduras_Girl with Man in HatWe are pleased to let you know that a team of volunteers researched and then visited three different Catholic mission organizations in Honduras this winter.  All three organizations are equipped and willing to welcome volunteer groups to serve at their sites.  Each site is within a couple of hours of Tegucigalpa, and each provides different kinds of opportunities for small to large groups.  Two long-time groups have already set up their trips for this summer!

For more information on volunteer group opportunities in Honduras, please contact us at volunteer@missionhonduras.com or 773-809-4008.
