Single Point Battery Watering
Single Point Water System With the today's high cost of replacement forklift batteries, it is sound business practice to include a regular watering schedule to your planned maintenance.  If your lift is a 3 wheel unit or pallet jack, getting water to the battery is as easy as opening the cover or hood.  But what about order pickers and reach trucks?  These machines typically have the battery encapsulated by the frame of the forklift.  This is where a single point watering system can make the watering task a breeze.

Single point watering systems have an irrigation tube that connects all the cells of the battery.  At the lead end there is a connector that plugs into a water source.  This water source is pressurized to allow flow to each cell.  The injector found in each cell fills it to the proper level without under or over watering.  The water delivery system can be a hose, gravity jug, or pressurized bladder mounted to a DC or AC powered wagon.

Like anything there are pros and cons.  When an injector fails or the tubing kinks, cells have the potential to go dry.  A regular wellness check is recommended.  The system on each battery also has an acquisition cost of around $20 per cell.  While this may seem expensive, in reality it may be easily justified.  The under watered battery will have a shorter life.  Reducing the times a battery needs to be rolled in and out of a machine brings increased safety and less damage to cables.

Rental Department
Renting a Scissor Lift? Mind Your Responsibilities.
Manual of responsibilities There is an incredible amount of safety concerns surrounding the use of construction equipment. At TLM we rent a variety of scissor lift equipment and work closely with our customers to insure that they understand the responsibilities and risks associated with this type of equipment.

A critical component of safety awareness is the "Manual of Responsibilities" which is located on each rental piece delivered. It is a wealth of not only the responsibilities mentioned in the title, but also safety worries. As an example:

8.7 Workplace inspection.
Before the aerial platform is used and during use, the operator shall check the area in which the aerial platform is to be used for possible
hazards such as, but not limited to:
  • Drop-offs or holes, including those concealed by water, ice, mud, etc.
  • Slope(s).
  • Bumps and floor obstructions.
  • Debris.
  • Overhead obstructions and electrical conductors.
  • Hazardous locations and atmospheres (reference ANSI/NFPA 505-1995).
  • Inadequate surface and support to withstand all load forces imposed by the aerial platform in all operating configurations.
  • Wind and weather conditions.
  • Presence of unauthorized persons.
  • Other possible unsafe conditions.

Another example:

Personnel footing.

Personnel shall maintain firm footing on the platform floor while working thereon. Climbing by occupants on the mid rail or top-rail of the aerial platform is prohibited. The use of planks, ladders, or any other devices on the platform for achieving additional height or reach is prohibited.

For the Veterans - Training Still Offered Free
Help Towards Employment

Next class scheduled for September 18th

No matter how you slice it, it isn't right. But in a tough economy and tougher job market employers are often requiring applicants to hold a forklift operators certification as a condition of employment. It's disturbing because the individual wasn't certified on the potential employers equipment or in their work environment. You can only see this prerequisite as a move to shift the cost of that training back to the individual.

Subsequently, with the aid and generosity of Toyota Material Handling, TLM is holding training classes for unemployed veterans at NO COST or obligation for our vets. After training the veteran will hold his or her certification card for forklift classes one through five.

We have already trained over sixty veterans this year, and will continue to help as many as possible. Please if you know of a veteran that could use this in their job search put them in contact with us.

Registration can be done over the phone, or by watching our event calendar link found at the top of most of our website pages. You can view the next event through this link.

They have served us, we all should work to do something to show our gratitude.

Seat Belts: They Work for Everyone
No chocks The laws are pretty simple, OSHA requires the installation and use of seat belts on lift trucks, and requires that they be in good condition.

You'll note that this inspection is a critical part of our Preventative Maintenance tech sheet.

Tire Safety: Not Just Round and Black
Tire tearing Why are forklift tires important? And when should they be replaced?

The first question is easy. Tires are essential for softening the ride your employee, equipment and product experiences. There is nothing else to absorb the shocks received as your lumbering machine makes its way across the shop floor or yard. The tire also has factors that involve safety, and for that reason there needs to be more care given to replacement, ignoring the often heard declaration of a tire's soundness from the customer "well they're still round and black".:

Warehousing Systems
3D Modeling of the Warehouse on the iPad
Warehouse Line Drawing There is a lot going on with the integration of technology into material handling and warehousing. From a great warehouse logistics source Warehouse IQ we offer this article:

Using the actual dimensions of the warehouse, the software first plots the warehouse out using lines.  The dimensions are in 3D and have an X, Y and Z dimension to build the 3 dimensions.  In addition to this, the software also allows for a D dimension to input multiple pallets deep.

Once the warehouse and its product is dimensioned, the travel path of the lift trucks are plotted in.

Now an analysis can be made on the travel time in the warehouse.  And once the detail of the rack is in the software, the warehouse manager can go for a walk in the warehouse with the software mirroring his movement through the warehouse.
