More 3rd Party Honors for Toyota Product
Toyota Material Handling, our major supplier and manufacturer of the number one selling lift truck in North America, was honored by Plant Engineering magazine's annual "Product of the Year" awards program for Toyota's 8-Series 4-Wheel AC electric lift truck. The product won the highest ranking, gold, in the Material Handling Systems category.

Award recipients are determined based on votes received from the readers of Plant Engineering Magazine, whose job roles include plant managers and plant engineers.

Toyota's line of 8-Series 4-wheel AC electric lift trucks is available in 4,000 to 6,500 pound load capacities. Ideally suited for virtually every indoor material handling need, from food and beverage to general warehousing and distribution centers, this AC-powered lift truck delivers longer run times and offers quicker acceleration, elevating the industry standards of productivity, efficiency, durability and safety. With the 8-Series 4-wheel AC-powered lift trucks, Toyota offers its customers improved performance including up to 21 percent faster travel speeds over the previous model. How far away are you before leaving a forklift unattended? - Find out

Rental Department
To Rent or to Buy
Toyota ForkliftIn an article published originally by Waverly Forklifts, Australia, the question over renting versus ownership was addressed, perhaps with a little bias. That said, we'll share the article here:

This can be a very complex question and there are obvious advantages and disadvantages of both options.

The most vital point is to determine what is right for you. We can give you some guidelines but every business is different as are the needs of the people running the business.

It is worth considering the following points.

Buying Second Hand Forklifts
  • Using the forklift sparingly and therefore don't need a top of the range, late model unit.
  • Service costs will be minimal due to low usage.
  • Won't tie up a lot of capital by buying a used forklift.
  • Own the asset.
However,
  • What happens when the forklift lets you down when you do need it?
  • Will a major repair cost you a fortune?
  • Have you maintained the necessary records to satisfy the Occupational Health & Safety Act?
  • Does the forklift meet minimum standards?
  • Will a change in your business change your forklift needs so as to make your current equipment redundant?
These points need to be weighed up and traded against each other. For some businesses, it will make a lot of sense to buy a used forklift and any negatives will more than offset by the positives.

If you are going to use the forklift(s) on a daily basis and for several hours on any given day, it may make sense to consider the following points.

Renting Forklifts
  • Your costs are fixed to a monthly rate. Budgets can be set in the knowledge that unexpected maintenance or replacement costs will not have be to considered.
  • You don't have to cope with the difficulty and disruption of unexpected maintenance costs and down time.
  • Capital is not tied up in equipment ownership and can be used to expand the business.
  • Rental is a non balance sheet item that can be fully expensed straight away. Return on assets is not affected. (You should seek your own accounting advice before deciding on a financing strategy for equipment).
  • Renting can often lead to a reduction in the size of your fleet. New equipment can produce productivity gains and reduced down times meaning fewer machines are required.
  • Rental provides greater flexibility as you can add and remove machines from your fleet easily without the risk of significant capital losses.
  • The business no longer has to concern itself with maintenance strategies and can use our expertise to assist with OH & S issues concerning the use of forklifts.
  • Unfortunately, there is not a standard answer or set of circumstances for deciding whether or not to rent or buy. It is a decision you need to weigh up.
Our take: In the end rental units are non-committal, reliable and disposable. With current production Toyota, Sellick, Aichi and Taylor-Dunn equipment available you can try the best before making any decision to invest capital perhaps better invested elsewhere.
Children's Cancer Research Fund
Can you help a worthy cause?
Young RadesSome years ago we had the opportunity to see first hand the good works this organization does for individuals in need. The daughter of one of our technicians had a long tough recovery after cancer treatment, we saw first hand just how much help this organization provides.

From Alyssa:

I am raising money for the Children's Cancer Research Fund in honor of my daughter Kiersten.  My daughter was diagnosed with cancer when she was 8 years old.  After almost two years of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and hospital stays, she is now 16 and cancer free.  Help me to support a great cause by making a donation of $5, $10 or $15 to the Children's Cancer Research Fund.  Every little bit helps!

Train the Trainer - Control Your Expenses
Reduce Your Exposure to Risk - July 24th
Forklift TraineeIt' the "right" thing to do, and it is the law.

Control your training costs by bringing it in house, with this training you or your employee will have the tools, information and sense of purpose to train all your operators now and into the future to maintain OSHA compliance.

Avoid paying fines for one of Minnesota's most commonly cited violations. Each person found not certified operating a forklift can cost you approximately $7000.00.

Toyota-Lift of Minnesota is preparing to present another all day class, designed for managers, supervisors, lead operators and safety directors who want to train their own employees in the safe operation of forklifts. Certificate of Completion issued.

For the Veterans - Training is Still Free
Help Towards Employment

Next class scheduled for July 10th

No matter how you slice it, it isn't right. But in a tough economy and tougher job market employers are often requiring applicants to hold a forklift operators certification as a condition of employment. It's disturbing because the individual wasn't certified on the potential employers equipment or in their work environment. You can only see this prerequisite as a move to shift the cost of that training back to the individual.

Subsequently, with the aid and generosity of Toyota Material Handling, TLM is holding training classes for unemployed veterans at NO COST or obligation for our vets. After training the veteran will hold his or her certification card for forklift classes one through five.

We have already trained over fifty vets this year [the most recent class topped one dozen], and will be working throughout the year to help as many as possible. Please if you know of a veteran that could use this in their job search put them in contact with us.

Registration can be done over the phone, or by watching our event calendar link found at the top of most of our website pages. You can view the next event through this link.

They have served us, we all should work to do something to show our gratitude.

The Right Tools
Bob under HetraThere are a lot of things that work towards faster and safer repairs, quicker turn arounds for those shop jobs that too often seem like [from the vantage point of the customer] a trip to the twilight zone. Some of those things don't come cheap, but some of the best things don't.

I had an opportunity to come across field tech Bob Rades working on a unit in the shop. Normally Bob does his work in the field but he followed this repair in and performed it in the aisle, presumably for lack of work space in our production area.

That's Safety You're Sittin' On
Sit on itThe "Operator Presence Sensing System" or "OPSS" for short was introduced on all 7-Series sit down forklift products in the fall of 2005 in response to a new safety standard required by the "American Society of Mechanical Engineers" (ASME B56.1). The new standard states, "Powered travel shall be possible only if the operator is in the normal operating position", The standard also states: "Powered travel may not occur automatically when the operator returns to the normal operating position without additional operations".

Do You Collect Vendors?
Warehouse CatalogEach of us has a Rolodex full of vendors; some used frequently, others not so much. It is a confusing collection of information and I'm always looking for ways to responsibly limit its size. One such way for many of our customers is our own on-line catalog and what is provided in it.

Available are all things warehouse, shipping and safety. Sure you can get these things from a thousand other vendors but through TLM you have two additional benefits. First you're likely already our customer so you would be keeping your vendor count down. Second, you have in a person [Sue Jungclaus] someone you can actually talk to with questions about products, or any inquiry about an order. Third, responsibility. As a customer of Toyota-Lift of Minnesota you are going to receive from us the same support you will get in any transaction. If something should go wrong, TLM will work through the problem with you with an unparalleled level of customer service commitment.

Just take a quick look at what we have. You will need to create a login account to order but it's a small quick step, then you're on your way. You can also call Sue with a page number and product and she can process your order over the phone. Give it a try. Find our catalog quickly through this link.
