David Warlick - keynote speaker on Friday afternoon at the Sioux City Art Center (AEI Fall Conference)

Accessing, processing, building with, and communicating information will be a major part of our daily occupational, professional, and personal work and play.  Being literate in this future will certainly involve the ability to read, write and work with numbers.  However, the concept of literacy - "the basics" - in an information-governed technology-rich world will be far richer and more comprehensive than the 3Rs that continue to define schooling for many.  This enlightening and thought-provoking address will describe how our notions of literacy must expand to harness a rapidly changing information landscape where content and knowledge are increasingly networked, digital, and overwhelming.

Message from AEI President Ronda Sternhagen

rsternhagenSummer...where does the time go? July is well into swing and many of us are getting that feeling of rejuvenation for our new classes in the fall. The flip of the calendar to July has also brought a time of transition for your AEI organization. Maggie Parks has moved on to the position of Past-President/Awards Chair, leaving our organization at the top of its game and some large shoes to fill in regard to leadership.

I am excited to serve YOU as President of AEI for the next two years as we face a time of uncertainty, but also of exciting opportunities for growth in art education. Shanise Brockshus has stepped into the position of President-Elect, learning the ropes of leading AEI beyond my two-year leadership term as President. Alison Owens has joined your Executive Board as membership chair, replacing Pam Muench in that position. Pam will continue on your Board as AEA6 (part of AEA267) Representative. Sadly, Carol Webb has tendered her letter of resignation as treasurer, effective July 1, 2011, so more transition is on the horizon.

For those of you who may not know me, I am currently teaching 6-12 art at Grundy Center Middle School and High School, beginning my 20th year in art education this fall. In the beginning of my teaching career, I taught K-5 art, K-12 art, and even a little 5th grade math and language arts. Last fall you may have bumped into me at the AEI conference in Cedar Falls, as I was on the planning committee for that conference. In December of 2009 I completed my MA in Art Education from the University of Northern Iowa.

Art education has certainly experienced its share of challenges in the last school year, but we have also had opportunities to showcase exactly how vital art education is to the education of the whole child...regardless of grade level. During her Presidency, Maggie Parks worked diligently with a group of dedicated members of our organization to create documentation of the arts as part of the Iowa Core Curriculum. That work continues as we await further direction from the Department of Education. Thank you to all who have had a hand in this most challenging endeavor. You are truly making a difference!

Make plans now to attend the 60th anniversary AEI conference in Sioux City this October 1-3. It is the premiere professional development opportunity for art education in our state. In encourage you to bookmark your national award winning AEI website and check it often. As always, I invite you to contact me or any of your board members about art education issues.
