Greetings!

Dear Art Teachers,
In the next day or two, the legislature will vote on Governor Culver's proposed funding for education. If SSB 3248 passes, many arts programs across the state can be saved. Art education needs your help, as the legislators are counting letters to see if there is support for fully funding education. Please take the time today to write your legislators.

Go to http://www.legis.state.ia.us/FindLeg/ to find who your legislators are, along with their e-mail addresses. Send them a letter in support of SSB 3248. I have drafted a letter using IAAE's guidelines, which you can feel free to copy and paste.

Start out with a greeting using your legislator's name and title, and if you have the time, alter the letter to be more personalized in any way you can. Don't forget to sign the letter.

In addition to this letter, we still need art teachers across the state to talk to their school board members and school leaders, as stated in Friday's e-blast from IAAE. But it is critical to have letters mailed to legislators today.

Thank you, and take care in these difficult times!

Sample Letter to Your Legislator

Dear

Thank you for your continued commitment to make sure Iowa's Public Schools provide all students with a quality education. I am writing to ask you to actively support SSB 3248 to provide funds for education that will save programs including the arts. I am deeply concerned by the proposed cuts to arts programs across the state, and SSB 3248 will help many struggling districts to keep their arts programs.

I am also requesting your support for strong arts education programs, kindergarten through high school, which are basic to a quality curriculum. Elementary arts programs must by taught by educators licensed in the content area, which is not the current practice in many schools. Elementary students should have a minimum of 100 minutes each of art and music weekly. Middle and high school level arts classes should meet as often and as regularly per week as do courses in other content areas.

Thank you for taking the time to read my concerns. I look forward to seeing what action you can take to help Iowa's students receive a full and quality education.

Sincerely,
