What a wonderful conference we had in Cedar Falls! The artwork was amazing, the sessions invigorating, and dining at the Gallaria de Paco was fabulous! Tim Rollins was in fine form, inspiring us to have compassion and patience for our most difficult students, and helping us to remember our mission to help students find peace and passion in life through the world of art.
Thank you to Nancy Barsic, Moria Brown, Sue Hansen, Rick Knivsland, Ronda Sternhagen, Kassi Nelson, Jeffery Byrd, Wendy Miller, and Andrew McCormick for all of the hours they spent planning and preparing for this conference. It was only through their efforts that we had this meaningful professional development opportunity.
I also want to thank all the participants who helped update the IAAE Strategic Plan and the Constitution, Bylaws, and Policies. Updating our plans and procedures and mapping the future of the AEI has generated a lot of excitement for what our organization can accomplish. I am convinced that we are becoming a more involved and vital organization with each passing month.
Please remember that all members of the AEI are welcome at all the board meetings. If you would like to attend the next meeting, feel free to join us on January 30 at the State Historical Building in Downtown Des Moines. The meeting will start at 10:30 am, and will coincide with the judging of the YAM show. If the weather is poor, be watching our web page, www.artedia.org, for a cancellation. The make-up date is February 6 at the same time and place.

The AEI Middle School Division is currently developing a visual art event (as yet, unnamed) that mirrors the music format of solo contests while upholding the standards of excellence long established for art students and programs.
On May 16, 2009, the middle school division sponsored a Mock Event. Six jurors (Mike Burgher, Pam Muench, Chris Noel, David Pratt, Sara Schaefer and Carol Web) and twelve Ames Middle School students participated in a Mock Visual Art Event for the purpose of both introducing and instigating dialogue about how such a competition might be organized and be beneficial for our association members and profession.
With unanimous positive feedback and the AEI Board's wish to move forward, the middle school division will organize a pilot event for the upcoming 2009-2010 academic year. Watch for more information at AEI's Middle School pages.
