Youth Art Month in Iowa
Greetings!

The Back-to-School jitters are past. Most of the new materials have been opened. Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming soon. Concerts and sports are on the calendar.

How about the Art Calendar? Do you have an event planned for this school year that features the work of your students? Some sports conferences plan shows for high school students. Some teachers arrange space in a local gallery. In Northeast Iowa, we have spring shows at several of the colleges.

AEI offers the All-state Visual Art Team and Youth Art Month exhibits in Des Moines. Your students can enter work for the Belin-Blank Scholastic Art Award. And we have several travelling exhibits that are making the curcuit around Iowa.  Cappie Dobbs and the Middle School Division of AEI have done the leg work for  a Middle School Competition with judging for a select group of middle school artists next spring.

As a member of AEI,  your horizons are ever expanding! Even though those spring events seem far away, now is the time to plan to get that student artwork submitted.
Oh, there's more...

Sincerely,
Nancy Sojka

What a wonderful conference we had in Cedar Falls! The artwork was amazing, the sessions invigorating, and dining at the Gallaria de Paco was fabulous! Tim Rollins was in fine form, inspiring us to have compassion and patience for our most difficult students, and helping us to remember our mission to help students find peace and passion in life through the world of art.

Thank you to Nancy Barsic, Moria Brown, Sue Hansen, Rick Knivsland, Ronda Sternhagen, Kassi Nelson, Jeffery Byrd, Wendy Miller, and Andrew McCormick for all of the hours they spent planning and preparing for this conference. It was only through their efforts that we had this meaningful professional development opportunity.

I also want to thank all the participants who helped update the IAAE Strategic Plan and the Constitution, Bylaws, and Policies. Updating our plans and procedures and mapping the future of the AEI has generated a lot of excitement for what our organization can accomplish. I am convinced that we are becoming a more involved and vital organization with each passing month.

Please remember that all members of the AEI are welcome at all the board meetings. If you would like to attend the next meeting, feel free to join us on January 30 at the State Historical Building in Downtown Des Moines. The meeting will start at 10:30 am, and will coincide with the judging of the YAM show. If the weather is poor, be watching our web page, www.artedia.org, for a cancellation. The make-up date is February 6 at the same time and place.

The Memory Project is an art service-learning program in which advanced high school students create portraits for children living in orphanages around the world. Read what Preston, Iowa, teacher Denise Larson says about The Memory Project.

Middle School Division
Cappie Dobyns
awardwinners
The AEI Middle School Division is currently developing a visual art event (as yet, unnamed) that mirrors the music format of solo contests while upholding the standards of excellence long established for art students and programs.

On May 16, 2009, the middle school division sponsored a Mock Event.
Six jurors (Mike Burgher, Pam Muench, Chris Noel, David Pratt, Sara Schaefer and Carol Web) and twelve Ames Middle School students participated in a Mock Visual Art Event for the purpose of both introducing and instigating dialogue about how such a competition might be organized and be beneficial for our association members and profession.

With unanimous positive feedback and the AEI Board's wish to move forward, the middle school division will organize a pilot event for the upcoming 2009-2010 academic year.
Watch for more information at  AEI's Middle School pages.
