ART EDUCATORS OF IOWA
November 2006

It doesn't seem possible that the Fall AEI Conference is now behind us. What a spectacular event that was for everyone! A big thank you to the Conference Committee for all their work in planning such a well-orchestrated event. Looking ahead, don't forget the January board meeting when Youth Art Month student art entries will be due. Information and forms are available for YAM and for the 2007 All State Art competition when you visit the AEI web site, now changed to Artedia.org The web site is looks terrific, btw....so thanks, too, to Nancy Sojka for her efforts to keep it up-to-date and to provide a very 'user friendly' professional site. Hopefully, in time the "Message" newsletter may be assimilated so seamlessly. Your patience is appreciated with this new venture.

President's Message
By Lucy McLennan

Dear fellow art educators, I am Lucy (Rummens) McLennan, president of Art Educators of Iowa, art instructor for the Sheffield-Chapin/Meservey-Thornton High School and Elementary in Sheffield. It has always been a great source of pride to belong to the AEI and it is with hope that I fulfill the office of president as well as those previous to me. I hope that all of you who attended the State conference this fall found it rewarding, enjoyable and refreshing. With the school year in full swing, most of us have finished the first quarter and we should all be feeling proud of the fact that we are the leaders in the development of a creative economy here in Iowa. If we could hear and use that as our mantra and pass it on to the administration in our buildings as well as across the state, our message may get to where it needs to be. But we need to be more specific than that, we need to take the time to write and inform those people in the power positions, how Iowa is going to be a leader in the creative economy by supporting educational classrooms that teach creativity. Gee, it sounds like advocacy! Don't forget to remind your administrators that continuing education in your discipline is a part of the state teaching standards, as it is for all educators in Iowa. Remember that your membership entitles you to participate in the Youth Art Month competition. The artwork is due at the winter board meeting, February 3, and you should be able to send it with your area representative or feel free to join us at the board meeting at the Iowa State Historical Building in Des Moines. Artfully yours, Lucy T. McLennan, President

2006-2007 Iowa?s Art Educator of the Year
Rebecca Kobos

Personal Statement:Receiving this award has been exciting and quite an honor. I have been teaching for over thirty years and each day is a fresh, unique, and interesting experience. My students are amazing artists and it is a joy to watch them grow through art. They like the challenge, the materials, the ideas, the discussions, and even the clean-up that takes place in the art room. I receive recognition from my students all the time. They give me small drawings or messages that say ?You are the best art teacher?. And they work very hard to do their best in the art. This award though, is about being recognized by fellow teachers who share my joy of teaching. I have been successful in the classroom because of others who have been willing to share their ideas and expertise with me. It is the professionalism of art teachers, both new and experienced, that inspires me to do my best. I have worked with many such teachers in the school districts where I have taught, throughout the state through Art Educators of Iowa and nationally through the NAEA. This award, given by my peers, makes me feel greatly appreciated for all that I have done. Thank you to each person who has helped me be the teacher that I am today.
