Wait until you see
what's new at the Westport Writers' Workshop this spring!
|
Because we have filled just about every workshop to capacity this winter ...
Because we have wonderful, new expanded space ...
Because you have asked us for workshops to address your specific writing needs ...
We are offering 5 new workshop series this spring, including:
- Crafting Historical Fiction with novelist, playwright and long-time teacher Steven Otfinoski, who has 150 published historical nonfiction books to his credit (Mondays 7-9 pm, beginning April 2);
- Writing Middle Grade Fiction with Ann Haywood Leal, author of two Henry Holt & Co. published middle grade novels (Wednesdays 10 am - noon, beginning April 4);
- On Being a Critic, with Erica Sanders-Foege whose book reviews have appeared in publications including the NY Times Book Review, People magazine, and Newsday, among others Tuesdays 7-9 pm, beginning April 23);
- Personal History: Getting It on Record, a new memoir workshop with Jessica Bram; this workshop is for those who are not aiming to publish a literary memoir, but have a lifetime of memories and experiences that they are determined to set down on record before leaving this earth (Fridays 10 a.m to noon, beginning April 6).
And now for something completely different ...
Because what is INSPIRATION, if not that inner, hidden mystery that one continually searches for new ways to uncover?
Rest assured that we searched far and wide for the best workshop instructors. This doesn't mean the most famous or widely published. It means the best teachers. Because our workshops are all about YOU, the writer, and about your writing. You come for craft, and we insist that you receive value. This results only from capable workshop leadership and extraordinary teaching.
You can register now for any of the above new workshops. Regular spring workshops open for registration March 8. Current participants have priority to re-re-register for their spots until then,
And there's more! New Saturday workshops and evening events:
Do you know anyone who has said, "I've always wanted to write a children's book, but don't know how to get started?" Make sure they know about the half-day Saturday workshop Writing for Children: A Workshop for the Absolute Beginner with Christine Pakkala, March 31, 9 a.m. to noon.
We're offering some terrific evening events, too. You'll gain some great knowledge and craft for the low cost of only $25. Speaker events are always free for Westport Writers' Workshop members.
We look forward to seeing you!

Open Mic Night

Jonathan Katz reading from his personal essay.

Monday's Open Mic Night was a revelation of great writing and a truly an evening of inspiration. A wide range of writers and listeners - some in our workshops, and many new to us - gathered to share fiction, memoirs, and poetry - and cookies!
So many people signed up to read that we stayed an extra hour to accommodate everyone.
Attendees especially enjoyed hearing the recent work of several of our workshop leaders, including Sandy Barron, Matt Debenham, Marcelle Soviero, and Linda Urbach.
 | |
Linda Urbach and Valerie Leff both read from their published novels.
|

Prill Boyle read from her novel.

News of Our Writers
| We couldn't have been more thrilled to learn that workshop leader Matt Debenham's short story "The Advocate" was named a finalist in Narrative Magazine's Fall 2011 Story Contest. This funny, wrenching story is available as an instant Amazon Kindle download for $.99, or free for Amazon Prime members. Download it here - it's well worth it! Matt's collection of short stories, The Book of Right and Wrong, published by the Ohio State University Press in May, 2010, won the 2009 Ohio State University Press Prize for Fiction.
Congratulations to Jane Cleland on great reviews from released March 27, 2012 by Minotaur Books. Jane has led Westport Writers' Workshop's Killer Fiction: The Mystery Writer's Craft, and Publicizing Your Novel workshops. She will return this spring. We are proud to know writer Susan Hood, who has three children's books forthcoming. Just Say Boo! and The Tooth Mouse will be available this summer, and Spike, The Mixed Up Monster will be published in the fall. Susan was a participant in Pat Hermes's Writing for Children workshop. Once again we report the latest publishing news from workshop leader Marcelle Soviero, whose essay "Blended" recently appeared in NY Metro Parents. Marcelle will once again lead several memoir and personal essay writing workshops this spring, as well as the Get Published Mastermind and Poetry Brown Bags. Keep the good news coming. If you've been published or have a success to report, please let us know.

What We're Reading
| |
This month WWW Founder/Director Jessica Bram recommends The War of Art: Winning the Creative Battle by Steven Pressfield. Jessica leads several memoir and personal essay workshops, including the upcoming Your Personal History: Getting it all on Record.
I will confess that I'm not someone who gets a lot of value from "how to be a writer" books. (This is unlike our workshop leader Marcelle Soviero, who has read EVERY one, taken and absorbed the best in each, then conveys it to her students, thus saving them huge amounts of time and effort.)
So when a book on writing knocks me out - and even more miraculous, gets me reading to the last page - it's something rare. Steven Pressfield's The War of Art: Winning the Inner Creative Battle (Rugged Land, LLC 2002) spoke to me like no book on writing or motivation ever has ...
