Now is the time to submit your nominations for the Sustainable Florida 2012 Best Practice Award program. The deadline is fast approaching. Details are below. Don't miss the chance to toot your own horn or sing the praises of someone doing great work.

 

Clearly, sustainability efforts continue to grow. The US Department of Education launched the US Green Ribbon Schools program to recognize K-12 Green schools. Florida received seven outstanding applications, three of which will be nominated for the honor by the Florida Department of Education. Look for an announcement soon.

 

Green schools at the K-12 level is thriving - not just at the national level. The Florida Green School Network is about to formally launch its website. Be sure to register your school when given the chance. We will announce the call for the Florida Green School Awards program about the same time.

 

I just returned from the National Green Schools Conference in Denver where Florida's Pine Jog Elementary was recognized by US DOE Secretary Arne Duncan. Pine Jog won the Florida Green School Award and was inducted into the FPL Sustainable Legacy Circle. Florida continues to be a leader.

 

The Educational Alliance for Sustainable Florida - composed of public and private colleges and universities - met last month. 

Connecting and collaborating higher education in Florida toward a more sustainable culture, EASF is working to ensure that Florida is the global higher education leader for creating economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and social well being.

 

The Florida Legislature is wrapping up its regular session. We hope to see them take action on helping to set some early energy policy benchmarks. Stay tuned.

 

Thank you for the great response regarding membership with Sustainable Florida. We will highlight new members each month. Don't forget that you can now become a member of Sustainable Florida. Whether an individual, government program, small business or large corporation, we have an affordable membership level. And now we have non-profit, student and education levels.

Member benefits include participation in regional forums, conferences and events, exclusive special briefings and updates, and networking opportunities with sustainability leaders in Florida.

CSF Best Practice Award 
Program Keeps Getting Better

Sustainable Florida is now accepting nominations for the annual Best Practices Awards Program - now in its 16th year.

We want to know about the exciting work in energy, water, green building, transportation, restoration, waste, land use, agriculture, or education - or whatever else you are working on. Nominate a friend, colleague or yourself. Just do it before the March 23, 2012, deadline.

There are seven categories for nominations - Government, Non-Profit, Large Business, Small Business, Partnership, Leadership and Green Building.

US Green Ribbon Schools is a new program from the US Department of Education. Sustainable Florida will help coordinate the judging for this program. Florida Department of Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson can nominate up to four schools from the state. Nomination deadline is February 17th - be sure to nominate your school today!

 

Don't miss Fishable, Swimmable? 40 Years of Water Law in Florida and the United States at the 18th annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference at the University of Florida Levin College of Law February 23-25 in Gainesville.

 

Meet some of the best association managed communities in Florida at the Communities of Excellence Awards. The awards program is scheduled for March in Hollywood.
