Rosmarie & Greg don't let Old Man Winter stop them - they're getting a good start on their latest project.

Soggy walking thanks to a brook running down the path.
It took Greg & Rosmarie an hour and a half to lug an old iron woodstove etc. through the woods and to the truck.

February '08 - the Year of Possibilities!
|
Welcome to February!
The last few days have shown we are still in winter. Hopes of spring have been focusing on seed catalogues which seem to arrive daily, designs on the board and closing up the 2007 files which always follows with writing up landscape plans for 2008. The future is never too far from sight.
We have designated 2008 as the "Year of Possibilities." Let's all use this year the best way we can, making a difference in our lives. To help the environment, see our links in the left column; for developing a new landscape, see design packages also on the left sidebar; to increase personal knowledge, consider Second Story Women's Centre Thursday sessions (found below this note).
I have also been focusing on the Helping Nature Heal website, we are happy to announce that we re-launched it late last night! Remember to "refresh" the page when you first visit our new site. Make sure you have the latest version - hit the F5 key.
We have worked long hours to ensure that our new site accurately reflects the company's mission.
As we prepare for another exciting year, year end, inventory etc, we will be required to close the office February 11 - 18.
Looking forward to re-connecting,

Seedy Saturday! Every spring across Canada Seedy Saturdays occurring in local communities. This year, once again, HNH & Second Story are jointly sponsoring Seedy Saturday in Lunenburg. The purpose of this event is not only to exchange seeds we have saved from last year's crop, but also to encourage the use of local organic seeds and food, promote self-sufficiency, and increase interest in gardening as a hobby.
If you are already a gardener, come and bring seeds to swap, trade, or sell. If you are not yet a gardener, come and talk to those more experienced and pick up some of their favourite seeds. Light refreshments available. Everyone welcome.
Please register for HNH Thursday Night Programs by calling Second Story Women's Centre at 543-1315 or 640-3044.
Second Story Women's Centre programs are free and open to all women. Coed programs are advertised as such or say, "Everyone is welcome." Minimal childcare and transportation subsidies are available

Nova Scotia now recycling electronics
As of February 1/08, certain electronic products are banned from disposal in Nova Scotia's landfills. Materials found in electronic items such as steel, glass, copper, aluminum, plastic and precious metals can be extracted and recycled into new products.
The Atlantic Canada Electronics Stewardship (ACES) Program is an industry-led electronics recycling program approved by the province of Nova Scotia. It's available to all consumers and businesses in the province.
The program is funded through the charging of an Environmental Handling Fee (EHF) for each item. All such revenue will be used for administration, collection, transportation and recycling.
For example:
- Desktop computers - $10 EHF
- Monitors - $12 EHF
- Desktop printers - $8 EHF
- Televisions - $15 - $45 EHF
The program prohibits the use of prison labour or the export of scrap electronics and hazardous materials to developing nations.
It encourages donation of still-functioning, unwanted electronic products to family members, friends or local charities.
For your own personal security, take steps to ensure all private data is removed from your computer before dropping it off for recycling or as a donation.

Corkum's Recycling is in Lilydale - just outside Lunenburg.

| Rosie Around the World
Rosie Swale-Pope is two-thirds around the globe so far - running - without a back-up vehicle.
Her remarkable journey is generating funds for the Prostate Cancer Charity, the Siberian Railway Cancer Hospital at Omsk and the Kitezh Community for Orphan Children Orphanage - the hope of the future of European Russia is its children. Also benefitting is the Nepal Trust that achieves so much with almost no money, in the Hidden Himalayas.
She updates her website every weekend. From her last entry:
As I write I am running poignant last steps on the US and Canadian continent ... Finale was yesterday in Truro - as I love Truro in UK, and small towns are always so special, so it was a great end to a fantastic welcome.
BUT the Rosie Party this evening is about 12km further on in Brookfield at the Brookfield Fire Hall tonight. I shall be telling stories about my run in aid of Truro Hospital, So - the last 12km are extra ..and are very precious to me. I am right now running through Millbrook native community about 5 km or 10km to Brookfield from here.
The next stage of her adventure: Greenland. |
| Canada Blooms in Toronto March 12 - 16 |
We've made it easier than ever to plan your visit to Canada Blooms. Each day of the show our lecture series highlights an aspect of contemporary gardening that's sure to inspire.
Tips from the pros
Want to add interest to your garden in winter? Lake Simcoe South Master Gardener Judith Rogers recommends growing trees with colourful bark and adding obelisks, which look lovely capped and covered in snow.
Reflections from gazing balls and mirrors light up dreary winter days too, and twinkle lights add a magical glow to the snow-blanketed night garden. Be sure to visit the Master Gardeners Ask the Experts booth on the 700 Level for solutions to your gardening dilemmas.
Happenings
Wednesday, March 12 is Garden Travel Day at the Canada Blooms Speaker Series. Be transported to the lush gardens of the Emerald Isle by well-traveled gardener Frank Kershaw who will take you on a slide-show tour of 35 public and private gardens in southern Ireland.
And while you're at the show, be sure to cast your vote for best garden in the Peoples Choice Awards, presented by Tourism Ireland - you could win a trip for two to Ireland!
