Welcome to November!
Where has the time gone? We'll soon be winterizing gardens - after several hard frosts, the ground is cooling. Hay bales and boughs help keep the soil temperature consistent, and free from frost heave.
We'll apply deer protection cages over many plants, Rhododendrons, Cedars and fruiting shrubs are our main concern. You invested in your landscape, protecting it over winter is important to us.
I have included several items of interest in this edition of Natural Notes.
It's wonderful the work of Al Gore et al has been recognized by the Nobel Prize Committee. On the other hand, I've posted an HNH Alert! regarding the development of Sand Dollar Beach - read all about it on the enclosed KCC website link and please pass this along. This development infringes on the marshland - a key component to the ecosystem.
Thanks to the Gregersens for allowing us to build their landscape, we look forward to watching it develop over the next few years. Check out our Before & After!
The SS Women's Centre is having an active month as noted on our Calendar of Events. As my daytime hours become freed up by the cold weather, I hope to work with Sue and all the participants at Harbour View Haven Garden Club for another fun winter. Please take note of the wish lists for both, we always welcome those who can help out.
I encourage folks to design early for '08. Those with payment plan agreements could think about next year's budgets. Do you have new projects in mind? Will you require manure and mulch? Maintenance? We can accommodate any budget with seasonal, monthly, bi-weekly or weekly maintenance. We also accept pay-as-you-go project-to-project jobs. Keep in mind these projects are done when there's a schedule opening. The consistent client is always guaranteed a place in the rotation.
With shorter days and cooler mornings, our schedule will shift, if you have questions please email me.
Until next time - thanks for subscribing!

Herbal Tincture Making with Jeanette Poirier
What is a tincture? It is an herbal infusion using alcohol or vinegar. This is a simple, easy-to-learn technique. You can make and use herbal tinctures as food or medicine. Tinctures can last for years and are a way of preserving herbal properties for later use.
We will also discuss some basic techniques for harvesting and drying medicinal plants. Jeanette is a medical Herbalist with a practice in Blockhouse. She is also a life long gardener and amateur botanist.
Thursday November 8: 5 - 8pm My favourite things!
Come to SSWC November 8 to discover your favourite things and develop a sense of self. Using gardening magazines, seed catalogues and various other media, we will work together to make a scrap book full of our individual likes.
Why would we do such a thing? Simply to learn more about ourselves and enjoy eachother's company.
As the holiday season will soon be upon us, and we will be busy preparing all sorts of things for others, it is a great time to reflect upon who we are, and why, and take the time to cherish ourselves.
A fun night filled with crafty ideas, laughter and great food.
All supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring a donation to the Centre.
Thursday November 15: 5 - 8pm
Come join Rosmarie for a fun and creative evening. Paper making is an age old craft, and we will try our hands at making a piece of homemade paper.
We will use various scraps of paper for our base, and will add dried flowers, colourful bits, seeds etc to make it a one of a kind!
You'll take home the simple instructions so you can make it on your own, as well as several uses the paper for, and other super ideas.
(Limited to 12 participants).
Saturday November 17, 9am - 1pm Second Story Women's Centre Indoor Yard Sale & Garden Club Crafts
Helping Nature Heal & Second Story Women's Centre are having an indoor yard sale - to raise funds for the Centre and its Horticulture Therapy Program.
Rosmarie is putting out a call for garden-related donations. Bring them to the HNH table first thing Saturday morning of the 17th and she'll price and sell during the event. As well, she'll be selling some of the products created by the HT group. (Volunteers are welcome!)
Due to the generosity of supporters, SSWC has an overabundance of items donated for a yard sale earlier in the year. Everything is priced to sell at the Indoor Sale: kitchen and household items, small furniture, children's toys, and lots of surprises. Come and do your holiday shopping early!

| Easy Doze It Excavating |
|
Brian Lohnes of Easy Doze It Excavating (Pleasantville, Nova Scotia) has been working with us for several years. Many of you have seen him with us on various jobs using either of his small Kubotas, and excavator or loader.
As part of our commitment to the environment, we have enlisted Brian to work with us on projects using his smaller gear to keep costs and fuel consumption to a minimum.
Brian has just purchased a new Excavator and trailer to ease our work and travel issues. This will also aid in delivery of smaller loads under 5 yards.
As one of our HNH team, we look forward to many more years of collaboration on many projects. |
