KRG Children's Charities Funds a Variety of Therapeutic Programs for Children In keeping with their mandate of improving the lives of children worldwide, the generous support of KRG Children's Charities funded a variety of initiatives in Israel in the KRG Youth Club throughout 2011 for children who are victims of terror. In addition to the ongoing in-house programs funded by KRG such as shabbatons, they also provided funding for outreach programs to augment the curriculum and help the many children who make use of the facility to heal.
During the summer of 2011, a variety of programs took place, including the Dialogue in the Dark Program at the Children's Museum in Holon. Through this program, people who can see properly learn to understand how it is possible to live without sight. This program provides the children with the sense that every task is possible, regardless of how difficult it is. Participants report experiencing a renewed sense of empowerment and self-confidence in their abilities to rehabilitate their lives.
In Therapeutic Horseback Riding, children learn how to improve the quality of their life while focusing on therapeutic goals by exerting discipline and focus on a particular situation, controlling movements and attitudes, channeling emotions and commands, and maintaining balance necessary for maximum functioning. In the Crafts and Sculpture Program, children gain insight about themselves, their behaviour, and how they cope with loss and bereavement. One Family Fund Canada is grateful to KRG Children's Charities for its generous support of these invaluable programs.
Twinning Feature: Zachary Freedman and Shawn Hen
 | | Zachary Freedman |
For my Bar Mitzvah, I "twinned" with Shawn Hen of Ashkelon who has been a victim of terror, and can't afford to celebrate a Bar Mitzvah like we do in North America. Shawn has one sister, and an uncle who is his age. His father abused his mother and now she takes care of the kids by herself. Their family has been affected by rockets 3 times, sustaining injuries each time. During the last attack, a piece of shrapnel hit Shawn's mom in her eye, and now she is also blind in one eye. Shawn deals with anxiety problems, and is scared to be alone.
Shawn says, "I don't wish such a life on anyone. The memories and flashbacks don't leave me for a moment. I get itchy simply from remembering the explosion, and my self-esteem is completely gone. It is very hard for me to concentrate at school, and I often suffer attacks of nerves and anger. I am left to simply pray for the day when I will be able to help myself and my family, and I wish I could stop being afraid."
Shawn and I have exchanged letters, and I have shared some of my Bar Mitzvah money with him. He and his family will use the money he received,to travel around Israel, instead of having a Bar Mitzvah party, as they have never been able to afford to travel or explore their own country. It feels great to have helped Shawn and his family in this way.
My Twinning project makes me really realize how lucky we are, and realize that when you think your own problems are so serious, you see how others who suffer so much more. As a Bar Mitzvah, I hope to impact the Jewish world in a positive way and really make a difference in our Jewish future. -- Yasher Koach Zachary!!
