A Message from your President

Happy Valentine's Day to Everyone -

This month, I'd like to address two areas:

1)       Improving & Strengthening our Professional Lives

2)       Empowering & Enriching our Personal Lives

I thought "Cupid's" month would be a great time to highlight these areas, especially any suggestions to enrich our personal lives. Valentine's Day is sometimes the most stressful day for millions of men across the country clueless about what to give to their wives, girlfriends, or current partners. As commercial as this National Day has become over the past 50 years, Valentine's Day does inspire most of us to focus on: love, giving, celebrating, recognition, compliments, and sharing our feelings for one another. And aren't all these things great for our self esteem and feeling a little better about our personal lives? Take a little extra time and effort this month to let people close to you how much you care, love and appreciate them. Obviously, this should be done more than once a year, but some of us can use the extra attention.

Professionally, what would you like to see happen this month or this year to improve your cash flow, work stress or career? Would more referrals per week help? How much do you love your job, position, career path, or business (if self-employed)? What would make you appreciate or enjoy your professional life more in 2010?  How much $ are you currently generating or receiving every month? Is it enough to get by, cover all your liabilities or save a portion consistently? Would it strengthen your professional life if you making 10%, 20% or 40% more next month or quarter?

ABWA and SEN can help you with some of these concerns and challenges, but you will need to find ways to work much smarter vs. harder all year. Attending meetings, becoming more active with the organization and serving on the Board can only assist you in your journey.

We all need to hang together, to meet and support one another, and my hope is that you clear your calendar on February 9th for our next SEN Luncheon at Un-Bacio in Gainey Ranch.

Upcoming topic in March will focus on several business areas of concern for 2010:

Launching a New Product, Service or a Published Book

Remember:  "A Woman's Place..... is in CONTROL!"

Register yourself and bring a guest to the next meeting - Tuesday, Feb. 9 for another business-expanding 90 minutes. And bring your gently-used clothing for Blessings Resale Shop to assist women in crisis.

Stay Healthy & Safe,

Mike Hayashi, President

FEATURED ARTICLE

"Perception"

Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007 - A man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 Minutes Later:
The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 Minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 Minutes:
A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 Minutes:
The musician played continuously.Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 Hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:  If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made. . .
How many other things are we missing?
