TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10 PROGRAM

NOVEMBER 10

"The 5 Secrets to Promote Positive Emotions for Health & Wealth in 2010"
with Karen Langston
Karen Langston
Karen Langston is a Nutritional Functional Medicine Consultant, Chief Body Reorganizer and leading health educator in nutrition and natural medicine. Her passion for health came after years of significant illness that started as a child. She obediently followed traditional allopathic methods that seem to keep some of the symptoms at bay but never the full potential of health and vitality.
After years of frustration Karen had the  epiphany that traditional practices were not going to deliver satisfactory results and decided to take responsibility of her own well-being.  She received a degree in Applied Holistic Nutrition, graduating with Honors, from The Institute of Holistic Nutrition in Toronto, Ontario marking the beginning of her ability to ensure her own health and to teach others to take responsibility of their lives.

OFFICER GREETING!

Mike Hayashi
This message is addressed to anyone who has had a so-so 2009 and those who made it through one of those "I'm so glad to see it drawing to an end" - type of years.  2009 is in its last phase and soon, the Thanksgiving Weekend will arrive.  And when it does, most of us will be focused on closing those last few contracts to add to 4th Quarter Revenue, plus Holiday Parties, shopping and New Year's Resolutions to lose weight and make 2010 a much better year.

I will be the first to admit that as of October 31st, I have not had one of my best years to date.  Even with my 1st international speaking engagement in Jamaica and Aruba; this was one of my most challenging years, both professionally and personally. What type of year are you having and what can you think of this month to be truly "Thankful For?" I know the simplistic angle of vision is to be thankful for our health, and our families, and our friends and anything that came our way in the past 10 months. But, let's all do a reality check and see exactly where we are, since this year is drawing to an end soon. How close are you to hitting all the 2009 goals you set for yourself and your business at the end of last year?  It is never easy to create, design and carry out all the things on our "How to have a great year checklist."  So many things come up to block, slow down, distract, or move us in another direction - day after day.

We need to hang together, to meet and support one another, and my hope is that you clear your calendar next week on November 10th for our next SEN Luncheon at Un-Bacio. Our speaker, Karen Langston, is a friend who is a walking testimony to her program topic. She has the perfect message during this Thanksgiving month: The 5 Secrets to Health & Wealth in 2010.

One of the secrets I picked up a couple of years ago from the movie: The Secret, was a simple little ritual to remind us how important gratitude is to each of us. I have a little "Gratitude Stone" that I simply hold and rub every morning as I quietly think about anything that I'm lucky enough to possess, be involved with, to be working on, and all the people in my life.  It works for me.

Some of the upcoming topics will focus on these and other business areas of concern:

 - Designing a simple, effective Business Plan for 2010
 - No-Nonsense Steps to Make 2010 Your Best Year Ever
 - Marketing Tips on a Tight Budget for Entrepreneurs
 - Social Networking - The ABC's to Create More Biz
 - Launching a New Product, Service or Published Book
 - Supporting local 501c(3) Non-Profits = Win/Win/Win

Thank you (Mahalo Nui-Loa) to my Board Members (Past & Present) - Without them, it would be a much rougher year for me and Scottsdale Express Network.  Donna Tucker, Janet Maxwell, Sam and Janet Shanney - you all rock and I thank you all for the time and energy you've dedicated to keep our group going.

And remember my personal tagline and our group theme since I took office:  "A Woman's Place.... is in CONTROL!"

A SLICE OF ABWA

Profits Aren't Everything -- They're the Only Thing

CTE and ABWA

This month I thought I would share with you some of the information I learned at the National Convention.  The following are from notes taken from a Session conducted by George Cloutier, CEO of American Management Services and Co-Chairman of Partner America.  They may be explored in detail by reading his book "Profits Aren't Everything - They're the Only Thing" - No Nonsense Rules from the Ultimate Contrarian and Small Business Guru. Harper/Collins, Publishers.

I will cover the first eight points this month and complete Points 9 through 15 next month.

Many of you have been looking at your business and are discouraged. Your sales are down - your operating costs are climbing but your cash flow is slowing to a trickle, and your bank won't lend you any more money. You say - everyone is suffering right now - it's the economy - Right?

Mr Cloutier says - "Don't blame the economy if your business if failing - it's your fault. Take a good look under the hood and you will see that most of the problems are internal - and that is good news. It can be fixed/"

He suggests asking yourself these questions:

1.       Do you take responsibility for every aspect of the business? Open the books and look at where you are financially and face reality if profits are not where they should be. Look for red flags.  Procrastination is denial's best friend.

2.       Do you love your business as much as your family?  You should. If workers are family members, treat them as employees.  Never hire anyone you can't fire.

3.       Do your employees respect you (not like you)?

4.       Are you aware of your customers and their needs? Do you know who calls each day, what they required, were their needs fulfilled to their satisfaction - are they happy?

Don't  leave this important factor to someone else - keep on top of everything.

Micromanage. In a small business, you need to know everything all the time.

Does your ego get the best of you? Never rest on yestrerday's sales - try harder tomorrow and the next day.

5.       Do you pay yourself well? Always pay yourself first, the rest will follow. If you are not happy with your salary, you need to work harder. You can't lead the way if you are behind the pack.

6.       Use flash reports - one sheeters - that give you the daily update on the status of your business.

7.       Delegate but verify. Use your control freak badge with pride.

8.       Every day think about where you stand on your operating and financial plans. Estimate your profits for the year and set that money aside. If you are having a bad year, adjust expenses accordingly and never spend beyond the original plan.

Never talk yourself into a negative position. It is easy to say - "the economy is down, everyone is hurting" or " I need to rest". If you start making excuses, its time to work harder. It does wonders for the morale when hard work starts paying off.

TELEPHONE ETIQUETTE: A Foreign Concept?

By Linda Thompson

Linda ThompsonAm I the only one?

Over the last few weeks, I've answered my business phone numerous times. All too often, as soon as I answer, the person on the other end of the line begins speaking so fast I have no idea what they are saying. Not only are they speaking too fast, but they are slurring their words to the point I begin to wonder what they've been inhaling or what pill they've recently popped.

All of these voices are young, and that leads me to write this piece. My readers know that I've (more often than not) stood up for our Gen Ys and Millennials as being intelligent, super connected, and really good citizens.

But I do have to ask, does anyone ever bother to teach them how to speak on the phone? They've obviously been hired by someone, somewhere, to do telemarketing, customer service follow up, or to schedule appointments. But if I am unable to understand their name and what company they are representing, if they are trying to sell me something, my standard answer is, "I'm not interested." It's not that I don't want to hear what they have to say, it's that I simply cannot understand what their message is.

Yes, I am a Boomer. No, I do not have a hearing problem. What I do have is a continuing sense of frustration at the time I waste trying to understand what is being said by the caller.

My message today is to employers of our young. Teach these kids how to speak. If they are going to be working your phones, have them call you and read their script. If you can't understand them, what makes you think I can? If you've experienced a decline from your telephone sales efforts, this may be the reason. Spend some time training these young employees that they cannot speak at the speed of lightening when they are on the phone. Yes, they are used to sending text messages at mind boggling speed, but when I receive a text message, I can take my time reading it. On the phone, they only have one shot and they aren't meeting my expectations.
