| OFFICER GREETING! |
|
October kicks off the last quarter of 2009 and I wanted to revisit the goals I listed for our Scottsdale Express Network in the months ahead. Very similar to the 3 goals I shared last year as I started my 1st term, but worth reviewing as this year is winding down.
Here are 3 things I promise at every meeting now and into 2010 to move everyone who makes similar commitments to reach the next level of their professional life:
#1 Provide a wealth of information and angles of vision on relevant business topics to help start or increase your business. Everything shared with you from our Board and Guest Speakers is a gift from the heart to implement. It all depends on you. #2 "Release the Guardian Within!!!" Instill a burning passion in you to make the changes in both your professional and personal life and then practice - just the way you did to learn how to: swim, read, run a computer or drive your car. #3 Inspire you to seek more information and to begin a lifestyle worthy of other women wanting to emulate. We all need to learn & grow more to become role models for others to emulate. My Board and I ask only two things for you to consider: 1. Attend monthly meetings (2 hrs a month is a small request if you make the time) 2. Volunteer to serve on Committees or the Board (Giving back always comes back 2U) You do not want to miss anything coming up over the next 3 months: "Hugh Jackman is a faithful student of the Principles of Practical Philosophy!" 10/13: Niall Mandal (School of Practical Philosophy) Topic: Is Anything recession-proof? "Imagine moving from Canada to start a new business in a tough industry? Some would give up... But others succeed, thrive and inspire others to do the same!" 11/10: Karen Langston (Certified Nutritionist & Social Networking Extraordinaire) Topic: "The 5 Secrets to Promote Positive Emotions for Health & Wealth in 2010!" "December is a month to reflect, regroup, remember and revisit with friends, peers and potentially new associates." 12/8: Join us for an exciting 2 hours of interaction, networking and business-building activities. Plan on relaxing at our 2nd Wine-Tasting Evening & our annual SEN Holiday Get Together later that month. Welcome to a great 4th quarter, and remember my personal tagline and our group theme since I took office: "A Woman's Place.... is in CONTROL!" Mike Hayashi, M.Ed.

"The 5 Secrets to Promote Positive Emotions for Health & Wealth in 2010!"
Karen Langston is a Nutritional Functional Medicine Consultant, Chief Body Reorganizer and leading health educator in nutrition and natural medicine. Her passion for health came after years of significant illness that started as a child. She obediently followed traditional allopathic methods that seem to keep some of the symptoms at bay but never the full potential of health and vitality.
After years of frustration Karen had the epiphany that traditional practices were not going to deliver satisfactory results and decided to take responsibility of her own well-being. She received a degree in Applied Holistic Nutrition, graduating with Honors, from The Institute of Holistic Nutrition in Toronto, Ontario marking the beginning of her ability to ensure her own health and to teach others to take responsibility of their lives.

ABWA 60th Anniversary National Women's Leadership Conference Sept. 24-27, 2009
The 60th Anniversary National Convention was held at the Hyatt Crown Plaza in Kansas City. MO. The attendance was down from previous years - I believe the final count was 750; presumably, our national economy was responsible for the lower number. It did not, however, dampen the enthusiasm of the attendees. If you were just an ordinary hotel guest you may have experienced isolation syndrome with so many ladies gathering in groups in the Mezzanine, the lobby or in the Convention Center to renew friendships with National Officers, past and present, and members from other chapters and networks around the country. Thursday morning was an early riser. Registration started at 7:00 am and voting for the new slate of National Officers began promptly at 8:00 am. After voting, everyone disbursed to attend their chosen Track Sessions. I chose Track C - "Dare to Discover", and learned some valuable information which I shall share with you in future articles. When we were not in Track Sessions we attended special luncheons or browsed over 70 vendor tables in the Exhibit Hall. On Friday it was the Recognition Luncheon honoring Inner Circle and 25 Year Members. The speaker was Myra Janco Daniels who shared her "Secrets of a Rutbuster" - describing the formative experiences that shaped her entrepreneurial spirit and love of learning. Immediately after the luncheon we learned that there would be a Run-Off Vote for National Vice President between our own Michelle Egbert and Pam Carvell. Back we went to vote again. At the conclusion of the afternoon Breakout Sessions, everyone flowed (figuratively) to the General Assembly Hall for the Annual Meeting, the installation of new officers for 2009-2010 and the Best Practices Awards... Casey Coven, former District IV Vice President, became National President. Unfortunately, our Michelle Egbert lost by six votes to Pam Carvell for National Vice President and Lynn Drowne was elected National Secretary/Treasurer. Due to extenuating circumstances, Yuma's Kella Price withdrew her name from nomination as she was unable to attend, and Debbie Shadaram became our new District VI Vice President. Arizona's Territorial Chapter won the award for Level I - Best Practices and Southwest Valley Express here in the Valley won for Level II - quite an achievement. Saturday's luncheon honored Women of the Year - past and present and introduced the new National Woman of the Year and the Top Ten for 2009-2010. It was truly an inspiring experience listening to each of the Top Ten share brief biographies and relate how their current achievements had been directly influenced by joining and participating in ABWA. . After the final Breakout Sessions on Saturday, everyone again made their way to the General Assembly Hall for the General Session and the ABWA-KU-MBA graduation. Then it was back to our rooms to quickly dress in our formal attire for the banquet. Many lovely gowns adorned happy ladies as they took this opportunity for a final visit with friends from around the country before returning to the General Assembly Hall for as rousing entertainment called The Passing Zone - two extremely talented young men performing unbelievable juggling acts. They even enlisted Vickie Marlett to assist in their final act which involved her being crowned with a construction hat topped by a flaming wand while holding three more flaming wands in each hand while the boys tossed six steel scythes in front of her. I must say - Vickie's wonderful sense of humor stood by her and she managed to ham it up despite a scary position. Rene Street reviewed the plans for next year's National Conference which will be held in Chattanooga, TN on October 28-30, 2010. I hope that many ladies from AZ Chapters and Networks will be attending so that they may experience the excitement, the camaraderie and the educational opportunities available. Meanwhile - don't forget the District VI Spring Conference which will be held in Reno, NV April 4-6, 2010.

| MARKETING THE REAL YOU |
|
I often wonder how the practice began of pretending to be someone else in order to market your business. You know what I'm talking about -- it's the marketing face, the selling voice, that you often put on in order to attend a networking event or make a sales call. Who taught you to do that? I have a suspicion where we learn this behavior. Most of us spend a lifetime observing showroom salespeople, product spokespersons in the media, and hucksters on street corners. What we see demonstrated there is artificial enthusiasm, manipulative use of language, feigned interest, and in some cases outright deception.
Sounds awful, doesn't it? So why copy any part of this distasteful way of selling?
Psychologist Abraham Maslow said, "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Perhaps we believe this is the only way we can sell because it's the only way we know. I'm not accusing anyone of consciously deceiving prospective clients. What I'm suggesting is that what we do unconsciously and automatically is to behave inauthentically around them.
Intuitively, many of us feel as if something is wrong with this way of operating. When we have to sell ourselves, we find it unpleasant, disagreeable, even repulsive. But what if all those negative feelings were simply because we hate the artificiality and manipulation we think must be a part of selling?
Imagine what it would be like to go to a business networking event as yourself. No facade, no pretension, just plain you. When someone asks your reason for coming, you tell them the truth. You don't have to claim you wanted to hear the speaker (if you didn't). You can come right out and say, "I'm hoping to make some contacts that will lead to business for me."
You wouldn't have to invent reasons to start a conversation. You can walk up to someone who looks interesting and say, "Hi, I haven't met you yet." If you're shy around strangers, you can tell the first person you meet, "I'm sort of a wallflower and feel awkward at events like this. Could you introduce me to some folks?" Now imagine placing a follow-up call to a prospect where you are completely honest. You could say, "I have some days open on my calendar soon and I'm wondering if this would be a good time for that project we've been discussing." Or, "We haven't talked in a while and I'd like to find out if you're still planning to start the new training program this year."
I see so many professionals and consultants struggle with trying to find an "excuse" to call a prospect. You don't need some manufactured excuse. You know the reason you're calling. Most of the time THEY know the reason you're calling. Just say what it is.
Let's extend this same principle to making a cold call. Instead of stumbling around awkwardly trying to make a polished -- but unnatural -- sales approach, imagine yourself saying, "I'm not much of a salesperson, but I'm really good at what I do. Can we have a conversation about what you need and see if I'm the right person for the job?"
If you've been working from a cold-calling script that makes you flush and get a tight throat every time you read it, throw it out. Come up with one really good opening line that feels authentic and gets directly to the point. Then decide how you will answer -- honestly -- some of the typical questions prospects ask you. My bet is that your calls will immediately get easier.
In fact, the more you become honest, direct, and authentic in all of your marketing, the more appealing selling will be to you, the more effortless it will become, and the more success you will ultimately achieve.
Because most business results from building
relationships, and how can you develop a relationship with someone when you never reveal who you really are?
