OFFICER GREETINGS!

End of the Year Message from Your President,
Mike Hayashi, M.Ed. - 2009 Woman of the Year

Wow!  A full year has shot by as your ABWA-SEN President, and I'm still standing and still smiling. Nobody has threatened my office with impeachment, harassment, embezzlement or corruption; so I'm a step ahead of many Presidents of other National Organizations... or of the United States for that matter.  All joking aside, I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve as your President for the 2008-2009 term and amazingly enough, I am looking forward even more to serving this Scottsdale Express Network in 2009-2010.

A quick recap of the year has a collection of incredible speakers addressing hot, inspiring, worthy topics that were well-received and provided our members with much needed information to maintain both our personal and professional lives while moving to the next level as the 2nd half of 2009 starts to wind down in the Fall.  Topics ranged from:

       - Marketing Tips on a Tight Budget for Entrepreneurs
       - Social Networking - The ABC's to Create More Biz
       - Personality Styles - What Makes Us So Unique?
       - Attracting Free Press/Media to Generate More $$$
       - Launching a Speaking Career & Best-Selling Book
       - Leveraging the Tools Within the Business Journal
       - Learning How to Create More Business via Using LinkedIn
       - The G.A.I.N.S. Sheet Method to Build Long-Term Relationships
       - Picking the Right WINE (Maybe the most important tips all year!)
       - How to Support the 501c(3) Non-Profits in the Valley = Win/Win/Win
       - Food Chains & Producing Bags of Hot Referrals (This Month)

We had a very successful year, with attendance very consistent every month and a room full of hard-working, professional, cordial, fun, giving women that has made my role a pleasure during one of the toughest years in the history of our country. "Mahalo Nui-Loa" to my Board Members (Past & Present) - Without them, it would have been a much rougher year for me and Scottsdale Express Network.  Donna Tucker, Kim Hollenback, Katheryn Morton, Janet Maxwell and Shawn Ward - You all rock and I thank you all for the time & energy you've dedicated all year to keep our group strong, active and... me in line.  For the new Board Members joining me at the helm this month; I look forward to generating more lunchtime visitors; producing very informative and empowering keynotes, lectures, workshops and discussions; building up our # of SEN Members List; creating more revenue streams for the group to give us $$$ to give us the tools to grow in 2009-2010... AND have a lot of fun during the year as we grow in our professional lives.

Who's with me?  See you on Tuesday, August 11th at 11:15 at Un-Bacio for some of the best Italian Cuisine in the Valley.  Come - Only if you want to learn how to have more people contact you from direct referrals from people you may or may not even know (Your Food Chain). Plus, walk out with a -  "Bag Full of Hot Referrals "and remember our theme this year:
Invite a friend you care about. Don't forget our belief statement & tagline for this year:

ALBUQUERQUE'S ABWA FIESTA 2009 RECAP

By Janet Shanney

ABWA FIESTA - ALBUQUERQUE, NM

CTE and ABWAHaving experienced such a wonderful time last year, I was anxious to attend the Fiesta again. Maxine Jones and I flew from Phoenix on Friday, July 17, and were met at the airport by Barbara Torres who handed each of us a little gift bag before whisking us off to the Hilton Garden Suites Inn.  After checking in and changing, we joined Barbara, her husband, Jim, Alicia and Lois from Tucson and several local ladies at the "Taco Social", followed by several fun games.  One game consisted of eight envelopes per table. Each contained a phrase about a famous woman in history.  If you could not guess on the first envelope, the second one was opened, and so on until one or more tables identified the lady in question.  I remember several women who were eventually "discovered" - Susan B Anthony,  Mae West and Georgia O'Keefe.  The table with the best score won a basket.  From the second goodie bags we received we extracted plastic noise makers = horn, clapper, whistle, etc.  You then went to the table who had the same toy so that harmony prevailed as we sang Old McDonald Had a Farm.

Saturday, after a delicious breakfast, we gathered to hear Monica Armenta, Executive Director of APS Communications.  Her topic was "The Only Constant In Life Is Change".  She took us on one woman's journey through a series of career ups and downs until she was hired at NBC in 1982 as a reporter and eventually rose to anchor before moving to APS in 2005.

Our second speaker was Stacy Sacco, VP of Marketing, Kirtland Federal Credit Union.  Stacy provided some powerful networking techniques for personal and professional success.  Three top points were:   (1)  effectively work the room; (2)  promote yourself as an expert and get more media attention; (3) create lasting business relationships so they keep coming back.

During lunch we heard from the candidates running for office:  Casey Coven, District VP-IV and Debbie Horracks, District VP - both running for National President;  Debbie Shadaram and our own Dr. Kella Price - both candidates for District VI VP,.and  Michelle Egbert, our current District VI VP, who is a candidate for National VP.  After each candidate presented her credentials, Michelle gave an excellent presentation on WIN which cleared up some confusion many of us had with the program.

We were surprised to find that Elvis was in the house.  Actually, he was our first afternoon speaker in the person of John Freisinger, an award winning speaker and trainer who gets a lot of attention when he dresses up in his white jump suit, black wig and sunglasses.  His message, although interspersed with humor, was  insightful as he shared his formula for "Compelling Communication".  You need to Connect/Convey//Convince/Convert/Contribute.

Our last speaker was Denise K. Baker, President, CFO of DRB Electric Company.  Her talk was entitled "Surviving the Roller Coaster".  She is the epitome of a successful entrepreneur, dividing her time between caring for her three daughters, managing a multi-million dollar company and actively participating in community projects.

Despite all of these great programs, we had plenty of time to visit the vendor tables and I had a chance to renew acquaintance with "Big Red" Doris Sherman from Santa Fe who designs beautiful jewelry and whose husband comes to mingle with their adorable ShihTzu.

Dinner at 7:00 pm allowed time for shopping, resting and dressing up, and then we were treated to another surprise - exotic dancers.   Two young girls performed the dances with five different costume changes to match each of the dances from Iran,Turkey,Greece,Egypt and Spain. While the girls changed, their mentor asked if any of the ladies would be interested in learning some of the steps.  Before long there were 25 brave gals shaking their hips and waving their arms.  Among the best was Vickie, our National President.  I know the Board will miss her laugh and sense of humor.  Our Kella also took off her four inch heels and showed she could  shake with the best of them.

Sunday morning came too soon and there was much hugging and congratulatory pats all around before Jeannie Banks drove us to the airport,  everyone promising to return next year.

ARIZONA REGIONAL COUNCIL MEETING, JULY 11

ARC logoDelegates listened to chapter/network reports about ABWA activities and events within Arizona. Most are getting ready for next year and did not have anything to report. Of note, Mountain Stars in Show Low is rebuilding, gave two scholarships this year and is sending members to the national conference in Kansas City; Special Friends will be giving a grant next year for the first time in the name of Lillian Freburger; Southeast Valley Express Network now has 28 members and hopes to charter soon; Southwest Valley Express Network is close to meeting the Best Practices criteria and is going to honor a Woman of the Community who is not an ABWA member; Tempe Charter will be hosting its annual Bunco event on October 16; Turquoise Camel gave a grant; and Yuma Territorial Charter Chapter gave three scholarships and is has meet the Best Practices criteria.

After much discussion regarding whether or not Round Up should be a chapter event or a council event, El Sol made a motion that it be awarded Round Up for 2010 and it was agreed. Discussion will continue on whether or not Round UP should be a council or chapter event and if the annual Leadership Retreat should be part of Round Up.

Standing Rules committee will be Marsha Sparks, chair, Barbara Sparrgrove and Toni Verso members.

Nominating committee will be Toni Verso, chair, Janet Shanney and Sherri Fritz, members. Will have slate available by 9/1. Delegates were asked to go back to their groups and see who would like to run for council office and let the committee know.

Hunger Knows No Season will wrap up on 7/31/09. More than $700 has been collected and ARC made a donation of $250. Pat Fehlhaber brought a DVD but there were technical problems so we were not able to view it.

Ruth Breen is finishing up the IRS requirements to become a 501(c)6.

Sherri Fritz volunteered to be Community Service Coordinator (publicity).

Short discussion on WIN, time constraints prevented us from actually viewing it on line. All presidents need to enroll in order to get chapter/network information as National Headquarters is no longer mailing this out.

Meeting adjourned at 1:15.

TRADING IN YOUR STRESS FOR ENERGY

By Kebba Buckley Button, author of Discover the Secret Engergized You

The effects of negative stress are profound, often exhausting, and sometimes life-threatening.  Many people use the expression, "I'm just sick of this!"  And in fact, your situation and your response to it may truly be making you sick.  In Japan, there is actually a word meaning "death from overwork".  Now that's stress!

If you are surprised at how tired you are, or at how often you are tired, there's hope and there's help!  Your body has only what you swallow as material for making all of its new cells-70 trillion of them- and running all of its thousands of processes.  So why not switch what you swallow, to help the body help you feel good?  Eat high-quality lean proteins, including beans and eggs, plus fresh greens and fruits, whole grains, and nuts.  Get your fats from wild-caught fish, olive oil, coconut oil, and nuts.  Take a high-quality supplement complex and drink filtered water.

Do this for 3 days.  After 3 days, you'll notice you have fewer stress symptoms, better sleep, and more vitality during your day.  Everything will seem easier, as if you were younger.  Now, for the rest of your days, let me tell you about breath techniques and finger holds and the benefits of coffee and chocolate, gratitude and forgiveness, and so much more-ready?  Only you can say "YES, it's time to unstress!"  Only you can trade in your stress for energy.
