READERSHIP CONTEST
 Are You Reading Your Newsletter?

Each month through the end of the network year (July), we will post a new clue in this newsletter describing a mystery celebrity. Combine the clues and make a guess at the July meeting to win gifts and prizes valued at $50 or more.

Come on ... play along. It will be fun.

CLUE #5 last clue -  a quote from the celebrity:

"When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick. If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."

OFFICER GREETINGS!

Mike Hayashi
Message from Your President, Mike Hayashi, M.Ed.
2009 Woman of the Year

The 4th of July is more than the celebration of our country's birth as a free nation. In 1776, our forefathers had no idea where the citizens would be 233 years after they signed The Declaration of Independence.  Do you think we are worthy of all the turmoil, battles and bloodshed it took to break away and become the most powerful country on the face of the Earth? As melodramatic as that sounds; we have soldiers overseas who woke up on the 4th of July and were thinking about that very same question and we owe it to them and everyone else who has sacrificed their time, energy, families, limbs and, sometimes, their very lives so you and I can get up, get dressed and go out the door to do our jobs with some peace of mind.

Being an "Military Brat", I witnessed my uncles and my father dedicate their entire working career to serving our country and I am guilty of forgetting just how much we owe every person who has served in the military or is on active duty today to keep us safe and out of harm's way. One of my grandfathers died in the Korean War, so the reruns of M.A.S.H. mean a little more to me than some other sitcoms.  I would challenge all of us this month to make an effort to take a breath, sit back and reflect daily on all the things we have in our life we should be very grateful for that has been handed to us, including the simple freedoms and conveniences we have just living in the USA and the Valley of the Sun. The # of grocery stores, shopping malls, restaurants, homes and  career opportunities we have right now is incredible to the rest of the planet; despite all of the incredible changes we've gone through the past 18 months. Sure, price of gas and the jobless rate is up, lay-offs and foreclosures are all around us and the disposable money seems to be getting tighter every week... but we're still here and moving forward.  Only those who are doing just that are reading this newsletter and will register and show up for this month's ABWA - Scottsdale Express Network's Meeting.

Attending the 2009 ABWA Leadership Roundup on June 20th was a pleasant, informative, inspiring and humbling experience as your president. I now realize how much more we have to do in 2009 and 2010 to evolve and become a stronger, more efficient and productive Express Network here in Scottsdale.  We have the tools and talent, so I  will be cracking the whip more often and louder to help our members present and future - become better business people and thrive in this market vs. just surviving in this history-making economy. It is not an easy road.... If it were, everybody would have Oprah's $ and Warren Buffet's portfolio. This month's meeting is about giving back and how that circle always comes back to you... Always!

Invite a friend you care about. See you all on July 14th and don't forget our belief statement & tagline for this year:

"A Woman's Place..... is in CONTROL!"

Register yourself early and bring at least one guest. See you all Tuesday, July 14th for another business-expanding 90 minutes.

Board meetings will continue to be held the first Thursday of the month at 5:30 at Paradise Bakery.

As soon as we get the bank account changed, Janet M. will open up a new box that is more convenient for her.

Best Practices Scoreboard was tabled due to lack of attendance at the board meeting. We felt more people need to be involved to get an accurate reading.

ARIZONA REGIONAL COUNCIL LEADERSHIP ROUND UP RECAP

By Michael Hayashi and Janet Shanney

ABWA June 20th 2009 Leadership Roundup Report:

Through the eyes of your President (one of the few men attending the event)

·  50+ in attendance - 100 would have been great, but too crowded for the venue.
·  Agenda was fairly well calculated. Most sessions ran on time. (It's never perfect)
·  Planning & Goal Setting Session (By Marci Tjader) had sollid information to make next year's calendar more focused, exciting, member-friendly and productive.

I walked away with a few implementable ideas including:
·  Printing business cards for our Executive Board & (possibly - active members) to carry with them to promote ABWA, SEN and our monthly meetings.
·  WIN as a tool to attract new members - i.e Run on Laptop during meetings.
·  An "Annual Committee" with "Past & Present" Board Members
·  Finding and utilizing a printer within our membership for pro-bono projects.
·  Targeting Evaluations monthly to improve meetings during the year.
·  Hosting monthly (or bi-monthly) Biz Workshops: Member benefit and $$ Raisers
·  Taking advantage of more resources to promote/advertise S.E.N. Activities
·  "Member Spotlight" - i.e. Pick one per meeting = 3 Minute Commercial
·  Target high but attainable goals to go for monthly and by end of the year - i.e. # of guests/members per month, new members, $ raised for SEN and NPO's
·  Inspiriing Keynote at Lunch that brought our legacies we leave behind to mind.
·  Great explanations of ABWA-Nat'l. & Local by Michelle Egbert & Christine Siler
·  "Woman of the Year" and chapter awards was a wake-up call to the amount of time and effort needed to put S.E.N. back on top with: Recruitment, Programs, Member Involvement, Leadership, Best-Pratices, Growth and Retention.

And Janet Shanney, incoming VP of Education

The Conference was held at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix and was sponsored by the Arizona Regional Council chaired by Lori Grobe. The success of the conference was due to the joint efforts of the Southwest Valley Express Network, chaired by Betsy Ingram, and Arrowhead Chapter, chaired by Barbara Sparrgrove.

The Saturday conference was preceded by a Friday afternoon golf scramble followed by a Hospitality event at the Pointe at Tapatio Cliffs where we enjoyed lively conversation, shared ideas and met several ladies from California while partaking of a tasty array of food and drink.

Saturday morning all attendees gathered in the gym at the Country Club to exchange interesting information about each other before going to their assigned breakout sessions. Mike Hayaski attended Section A and I attended Section B so that we could cover all the subjects presented and pass as much information along to you as possible. The following is a digest of Section B and the closing events.

The first session was conducted by Lorraine Lantz, owner of Westside Blinds and VP-Finance of SWVEN. She discussed the timely subject "How to Become a 501 (c ) 6 Chapter/Express Network". She provided us with a CD which gives detailed step-by-step directions for this process, including the forms required. I have extra sets of the printouts which I will make available to the Board. This information should quell the fears of filing for this designation. The most difficult part will be assembling the four years of financials for the Consolidated Financials.

After a quick break we launched into an excellent presentation of QuickBooks by Michelle Stephens, owner of Profitable Accounting and VP-Finance of Arrowhead Chapter. Michelle used the QuickBooks Basic and took us through each entry in the order it should be done so that we would not run into balancing problems in the end. She also has a CD which you may request and is available for any questions you may have. She did stress that you should not enter bank deposits until your income and expenses had been entered in their proper Chart of Accounts, and always do a Reconciliation with your bank statement to be certain that you agree with the ending balance. She also strongly suggests backing up once monthly to avoid problems later. There were a number of questions from the group and Michelle provided very concise answers.

The third session was a discussion on newsletters presented by Vickie Mullins, Entrepreneur and owner of Mullins Creative, a graphic design and print management service. Vickie gave a dynamic critique of SVEN's Newsletter (that is the one provided to her). We all agreed that the content and effort was top notch. Vickie's job was to show how print setup and presentation makes the difference. Her major points were:
A. Consistency is Key
1. Fonts - keep uniform for body of information and for captions - don't use four styles
2. Color - when using color, keep the same throughout and be sure borders go to bottom
3. Text Size - if text is split into columns it is easier to read - keeps attention focused.
4. Spacing - no gaps allowed between some words, or uneven paragraph spacing.
5. Photo Placement - keep all photos the same size - keep captions small and no fancy fonts
6. Paragraph treatment - keep flush with margin - do article in columns for easier reading rather than stretch out across the page. Also provides more room for other things.

B. The Devil Is In The Details
1. Spell Check - always
2. Proofread - then get someone else to proof read
3. If you refer to telephone numbers, call them first to be sure they are working
4. If you use email, Web site, URLs - be sure to check them out to be sure information accessible.

After a short break to view the vendor table and network, we all gathered for lunch during which Vickie Mullins spoke about "Going Away Gifts - The Legacy You Can Leave." She told some personal stories about family and friends who inspired her to write and publish a series of books entitled "I Want You To Know Me." She now has books dedicated to Mom and Dad, Grandparents, Your American Hero and Me. Within these books are hundreds of personal questions which, when completed, will preserve and recall memories of those who are no longer with us.

There was also a brief review of WIN for those who were not present at the Spring Conference or for the Webinars, and a panel discussion on "Ways to Grow Your Chapter/Network." Christine Siler gave some excellent ideas on new-member orientation.

The final session was devoted to awards and the keynote speaker, Michelle Egbert. Michelle, our current District VI Vice President, stated how important it is to understand the purpose of ABWA which is unique in that it is not just a networking venue but a stepping stone to building lasting relationships and benefiting from the educational opportunities available from both National and the local chapters and networks. She shared some of her personal experiences as she developed through her association with ABWA. Michelle is running for National Vice President this year.

Lori Grobe then introduced Debbie Shadaram and Dr. Kella Price, both of whom are running for the office of District VI Vice President. Each shared a brief biography with us.

Lastly, the long awaited awards. Barbara Sparrgrove held forth and guaranteed that all awards were determined by outside judges from Michigan. Those who had been named Woman of the Year and submitted their credentials were presented with medallions and everyone crossed fingers while Barbara announced that the Arizona Woman of the Year is Pat Felhhaber. Diane Walters, last year's recipient, presented Pat with her trophy.

Christine Siler won several awards including "Most Members Recruited" and the Territorial Chapter from Yuma won the award for best banner. Members of Arrowhead Chapter loudly cheered at the announcement that they had won the newsletter award.

Everyone seemed to agree that the leadership conference was a success. Kudos goes to SVEN and Arrowhead for their organization and the efforts of those who made it possible. We all left with new knowledge and enthusiasm.

TOOT YOUR HORN!

From member Marci Brown-Gilpin new parent.CTE and ABWA

How fun to send an update.  This is all I can talk about these days!

The adoption journey is an amazing one. First you hurry to complete the paperwork and then you wait.  We joke in the adoption community that we hurry to wait. One does not have a due date but it is like being spiritually and mentally pregnant. Our beautiful son, Samuel Eli was born on June 1st.  We recieved our call, "Its a boy!" the following day. Life then changes overnight. Quick open the attic. Where is the car seat, clean the bottles and wash the clothes.  Oh, what formula is he on"  Run to Walmart!  We are doing well and establishing our new routines!

EPIGENETICS

By Member Sherry FritzSherry Fritz

Epigenetics:  Are you turning on your Olympic Genes or Disease Genes?

Epigenetics has become a hot topic in the medical community. NOVA even did a
show on the topic.  http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/3411/02.html

Keeping up with the times Juice PLUS+® has had several major doctors talk about
Epigenetics: Dr. Richard Dubois, Dr. Candace Corson and Dr. Mitra Ray.

Visualize two light bulbs. The one on the right is a gene that promotes your
health while the one on the left is a disease promoting gene.

Obviously we want the health light bulb or gene to be expressed on and the
disease light bulb or gene to be left off.

Functionally when you turn the light bulb on it doesn't change the shape of the gene but does change the functionality. When the disease related gene is turned on, it changes both the shape and function of the gene.

What is critical about this description is that once the light bulb is
turned on it may well stay on for two to three generations.

The only weapon we have to fight the bad gene is whole food nutrition.  We know nutrition repairs cells over a period of time. Drugs alter our cells and have side effects.  Drugs do NOT repair cells.  Thus, one drug leads to the next and so on.

The term Epigenetics may in fact be changed to Nutragenetics.

Are you putting food in your mouth to express your athletic genes or your disease genes?
