OFFICER GREETINGS!

Mike Hayashi
Message from Your President, Mike Hayashi, M.Ed.
2009 Woman of the Year

April = Tax Time - Spring Time - Business Crunch Time - Reality Check Time!

How are we doing? The 2nd quarter of 2009 is here and many people are still living in the last half of 2008 and wondering where the first 3 months of 2009 went....

If you feel that way once in awhile during the week, you're not alone. This year is smack dab in the middle of what many experts are labeling "The New Economy" vs. some of the negative terms designated to describe the state of our nation's economy and work environment. As someone who has worked with small business owners and Fortune 500 CEO's over the past 14 months here in the Valley, as well as in other states - everyone is feeling the pinch at many different levels. The question is - What are you willing to do to make things work in 2009? What changes are you making an effort to commit to in order to be one of those who prospers rather than wallows in... "How bad it is in the USA"?

Some of us have discovered that this is the perfect time to network more than ever every single month. Not only network, but actually work the networking system so it pays off in a variety of dividends. How many people do you know who really believe that going out once in awhile to a chamber or monthly function to collect and/or pass out as many cards that is humanly possible is filling their "networking quota"? You are in luck this month for 3 Reasons: (1) I am personally pumped up about helping Scottsdale Express Network become the best networkers in the Valley. (2) Dave Sherman, "The Networking Guy" himself, will be our featured guest speaker on the 14th. (3) This will be a spring board meeting into May and June with two powerful sessions to generate more referrals, clients and $$$ this year.

In May, you will create an awesome tool for you to use in your face-to-face meetings and June has the premiere trainer in the USA coming in to show us how to move from social networking to the business side in one quick lesson. Don't miss the next 3 meetings, unless you have more clients than you can handle and too much money in the bank. In other words.... Don't miss the next 3 monthly meetings! Go out today and meet 3 new people to work with, get business from or send business to in April. You win no matter what.

By the way, Janet Shanney has agreed to chair this year's Nominating Committee (elections of new officers in May to take over August 1). She will be calling you soon either to ask you to serve on her committee or to run for office. Please think seriously about becoming a part of the leadership team.

BRANDING BASICS

by Julia-Isabel Davenport, MBA julia isabel

Branding is what people think about your business when they hear your company name. What are some ways you can create your brand? Using traditional methods like networking, customer service, business cards, websites and even publicity. One of the more recent methods has been with social media. That could include blogging or micro-blogging with Twitter, using on-line networking groups like LinkedIn or Facebook, or even posting a video on YouTube.

When using social media you need to first decide the purpose behind the tool. Will it be personal or professional? There is a difference in how you will present yourself, in what you post and how you answer. With most small businesses the company owner is the company brand. Be mindful of that before you post something that could drive off your potential customers.

Likewise, you can use these same tools to attract potential customers. Use keywords that they would search for to find you in your messages. If you need ideas on what they might search, you can have Google search your site for potential keywords. This can be found at http://adwords.google.com.

Another way to promote your social media brand is to include it on your email signature so that everyone knows how to reach you. For example my signature file includes:

HOW TO SAY NO AND STILL BE LIKED

By Michael Lee

We've all been in this situation. Somebody asks us to do him or her a favor and, though there are a gazillion other things we should do first, we find it difficult to turn the other person down because he or she has done us a favor in the past, or is a close friend or a family member. The concept of gratitude prevails and we find ourselves trapped in something we really didn't know why we committed to. We can sometimes be so worried at causing disappointment in other people, often at the expense of our own activities and interests.

Frankly, knowing how to say "no" requires skill. Others might say that it shouldn't be hard to do. But, let's face it. We live as social beings and acceptance often occupies the number-one spot in the list of virtues we want to achieve. Despite this, there are actually ways we can circumvent this difficulty. Subliminal persuasion is one way.

Here are five more friendly, pain-free and reasonable ways to say "no."

1. Say "no"; then show what the other person has to do to get a "yes"
For example: An employee is asking you for a raise but you hesitate to do so because lately he's been skipping work and picking arguments with co-workers. Yet, he looks like he really needs it and has been working for your company for three years now. You want to give him a raise, but his recent behavior is a little disappointing. How do you say "no"?

Tell him that you can't approve a raise right now, but will do so once you see an improvement in his work ethic. You can say, "I understand your need for a salary increase, but in order for me to implement that, we'll have to work on strengthening your work habits. Now, let's see how we can make that happen..."

2. Make it impersonal.
Make it sound like saying "no" was a matter of circumstance, not of choice. An example of this is: "We've just paid our mortgage and my daughter is going off to college in two weeks. I won't be able to lend you money."

3. Say "no" in a way that will make the other person say "no" to himself or herself
Instead of saying "no," teach the other person to say "yes" to what you want. Do this subtly, of course. For instance, your fashion-conscious sister wants to get a pink iPod while you want a blue one. You can tell her that while pink is a cute color, it's more difficult to match with her clothes. Once you level with her and link what you want with what interests her, she'll give in and agree with you.

4. Say you want to say "yes," but...
Like tip number two, make it sound like you had no choice but to turn the other person down. This way, the relationship remains intact and no one gets hurt. Just don't involve other people, like blame your saying "no" to somebody else, as this could result in conflict and ill feelings.

5. Say it nicely.
You're giving negative news, so you might as well do it nicely. Let the other person down easy to avoid misunderstandings. It's the least you can for the disappointed. People tend to be more accepting of bad news if it's brought in a polite and sympathetic manner.
