OFFICER GREETINGS!

Mike Hayashi
Message from Your President, Mike Hayashi, M.Ed.
2009 Woman of the Year

Last month, some of us were fortunate enough to experience Maureen Mulvaney - a.k.a. "MGM" as she shared some of her strategies and pearls of wisdom to make things happen against self-imposed odds. Being one of the most sought after speakers in the country, we were lucky to match a date when she was in town to speak to us. She made me realize how possible some of the things others might consider impossible are - if I just stay focused, passionate about the results I want and persevere when others quit.  For example: Who could have known or even guessed that someday, I would be President of one of the ABWA chapters and chosen as the "Woman of the Year?" I have had the honor of winning several awards and trophies for sports since my youth; but few have meant as much to me as the one that I will be receiving next week. Almost every person I have mentioned this award to has smiled and laughed; but after dedicating 22 years of my life to providing programs and products to End Violence Against Women - it is nice to be acknowledged by my peers and deeply appreciated.

Take a close look at your daily routines, the dreams you have for you and your company, the successes you've had this year, the disappointments you've encountered more often than you'd like and your own life's mission. Ask yourself if you are satisfied with the results you are coming up with lately?  Once we get past blaming the economy, the recession, the bail-outs, and every other excuse we can think of; we will find ourselves looking hard and long at the same things MGM reminded us to pay attention to last month.... If we truly love and really believe in what we are doing, then we will make it work instead of giving up at the first sign of failure.  We will get out of our own way and stay focused and empowered everyday to do what others consider impossible.

How can you stay on track, keep inspired and get support from people who share the same challenges? Coming consistently to our ABWA-SEN monthly meetings is a good start. Our goal is to expand your horizons, empower you to tackle new challenges every month and open the doors to more new business relationships with our members and guests.  Stay strong, healthy & safe.

Inspire Clients to Say... I Need That!
Finding Your Irresistible "Juicy" BenefitsCherneyLISA

Presented by: Lisa Cherney, President of Conscious Marketing

Have you noticed lately that everyone is promising to help you "make more money," or "feel happier?" We often ignore these promises because we hear them so often. So, how do we stand out in the crowd? How do we communicate the benefits of our product or service so our clients will actually hear us? The key is connecting with our "Juice," that authentic passion that comes from inside.

When you uncover and communicate your Juicy Benefits with clarity and conviction, your Ideal Clients will finally understand how you can help them. In fact, we nearly eliminate the notion of competition when we find these words. Clients appreciate why you and your expertise are unique and they say, "I need that!"

In this interactive discussion, you will get to the core of what makes you and your service distinctive, and how to communicate your capabilities in the sales and marketing process. Uncovering this Juice and articulating the passion for what you do, will give you clarity to communicate an authentic marketing message that will attract tons of your ideal clients.

NEW MEMBER PROMOTION

My name is Caitlyn Fogerty and I am a FinanciCaitlyn Fogertyal Advisor with Edward Jones. I work with individual clients as well as small business owners to determine their investment needs and achieve their long term financial goals. As a woman in the financial industry, I feel it is very important to educate other women on the importance of retirement planning as well as keeping them updated on the market fluctuations.

With my monthly newsletter segments, I intend to provide information on different aspects of investing. If at any time there is a topic you would like to learn more about, please don't hesitate to contact me.

This month's article is titled "Don't Fear the Bear".
On October 9, 2002, the Dow closed down at 7,286. The following day, USA Today printed an article titled "Where's the Bottom? No End in Sight as Day by Day Dow Sinks Away." The paper also featured the photos of four strategists, whose forecasts for the Dow were 6,100, 5,500, 5,000 and 777. The last forecast was punctuated by comments that "the economy is in the brink of its first depression in 70 years."

As we now know 7,286 was the end of the market's decline. It was followed by one of the longest market rallies in stock market history. We believe that, when combined, "this time is different" are four of the most dangerous words in the investing world.  In bear markets, investors should keep a cool head and a steady hand and ignore extreme predictions of doom and gloom.

The Dow has now hit the the new record low of 7,115 but the message is still the same. Hang in there and please feel free to contact me if you would like more information on this subject, or to discuss any aspect of financial planning.

SUPPORTING SMALL BUSINESS

by Christina Wagner

It seems that everywhere we turn the news about our economy is glum, glum, glum.  We all want things to go back to the way they use to be, but we feel helpless and we are waiting for someone or something to fix us.  The truth is, individually we do have a rather small voice, but as a group, we can roar!  We can make a change, at least for us in Arizona.  However, it is going to take all of us to make a sound that could be heard around the entire state.
Ok, so what can we do?  Just shop locally!  I know, I know, now you're smirking.  I did too, until I started studying the situation.  Below are some very interesting facts you really might like to know:
·  Small business owners created 60.4% of Arizona's new jobs in Arizona from 2004 to 2005. .
·  Small locally owned businesses give back 45¢ more on every dollar to the community in which they live, versus out-of-state national corporations.  Your money stays in Arizona and creates up to 75% more tax revenue for your community.
·  For every two jobs national retailers bring to a community, three jobs are lost because of local businesses closing down.

Moreover, when the big chains have forced the small business owners out of business, we will not have a choice in products we buy or services we need, they will make all our choices for us.
To help create jobs, put more money in your community and local non-profit's, shop locally. A good place to start is at www.DarnGoodDeals.net.  All the recommended, locally owned businesses on this site have been selected because they have been comparison-shoppedand researched for great value, great service and unique products.  Visit some small business owners near your home or work, you will find people who appreciate your business.
HOPE YOU DIDN'T MISS MGM IN FEBRUARY!

MEET OUR NEW NETWORK WOMAN OF THE YEAR!
Mike_WOY
The Network Woman of the Year Program is designed to recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions members make by electing a Network Woman of the Year.

Scottsdale Express Network has set up the following selection criteria:
- contributions in time or effort to SEN
- involvement in ABWA activities / events as a representative of SEN
- personal career / major accomplishments
- member recruitment

Our 3 outside judges were business professionals, who reviewed the two applications this year and picked a winner we can certainly be proud of. As the new Woman of the Year, this individual will be honored at the annual ABWA Arizona Regional Council Showcase luncheon on Saturday, March 7 at the Arrowhead Country Club in Glendale. We hope all of you will attend this event and support our new Woman of the Year - Mike Hayashi.
SEN BOARD MEETING MINUTES
 ABWA
February 5, 2008, 5:30 p.m. - Mike, Donna, Shawn (Shawn was warmly welcomed to the board) and Katheryn in attendance; Kim was absent.

For the February meeting:

Kim will present the Woman of the Year award at the February meeting. Katheryn will get the trophy ordered this week.

Donna will use the ABWA minute to talk about Spring Conference in Tucson, March 20-21.

Katheryn will talk about registration and raffle.

Mike will continue to read the 2 mission statements.

We will be giving out 5 extra 50/50 tickets to anyone who opened the newsletter (and buys at least one ticket). We will all try to bring a door prize to sweeten the pot.

Other business

· Katheryn reports our budget / treasury is in good shape.
· Showcase honoring the Woman of the Year will be March 7 at Arrowhead County Club. We will need to donate a $30 door prize and pay for the winner to attend.
· Mike is working on the April extra networking event - wine tasting.
· Mike has some ideas for future speakers as does Shawn; they will share them with Kim.
· Shawn feels our table arrangement is not conducive to networking; she feels that may be making a difference in people joining. Mike / Kim will see if we can get the bigger room and split up the tables. He will also look into Macaroni Grill and Buca di Beppo.
· Passed a motion to pay for any SEN member's lunch if she/he wants to attend an Arizona Regional Council meeting. This will be added to the standing rules.
· Newsletter - Getting people to read it is a problem. We may add a contest culminating in July with clues planted in each newsletter. We'll award a dinner for two or some such thing. Still in the planning stages.
· Shawn will rework the display board for the meetings and has some great ideas for business cards which she will institute next month.
· Mike printed out a national roster, so we can contact lapsed members.
· Discussed better methods of encouraging guests to join the network - more contact at the door. Katheryn will be sure to ask for help from current members.
· Mike has set a goal of 25+ attendees at February and March meetings - yes, we can!

Meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Donna Tucker, VP of Communications

SOCIAL BOOKMARKING FOR BEGINNERS

Beth Terry, CSP, Professional SpeakerBeth Terry

By now you've heard of Social Networking. Even if you think you don't know what the term means, you've heard of MySpace, and Facebook. You may have heard of LinkedIn, Plaxo, or ecademy. If you aren't sure what they are, try putting each word individually in your browser and add a ".com" at the end.

"Social network" is the name for online communities that are growing by leaps and bounds throughout cyberspace. Now it's as easy to chat with someone in Bahrain or Chile as it is with someone a block away from you.

But wait! There's more! Another layer to this connectivity is called "Social Bookmarking." While Social Networking connects you to people, Social Bookmarking connects you to information first, and the interested community second. Think of Social Bokmarking as a giant Card Catalog* that sends out a message to everyone interested in a specific topic every time that topic is updated.

(*Note: if you don't know that a Card Catalog is the hands-on index drawers in the Library where you go and search locations of books and articles BY HAND - yes BY HAND! - then you probably don't need to read this article...)

I digress. Back to the telegraphing Card Catalog.

Let's say you are reading a very interesting article and you want to remember where you found it. Back when the internet was young, you probably went up to the little bar at the top of your browser and told it to "Bookmark" this page. That was great. But what  if you wanted to share it with someone? Then you would highlight the URL (that's the address in the browser up at the top) and you would copy it and paste it in an email to your friends.

Social Bookmarking takes this to a new level, allowing you to share your "find" with thousands of people all over the world with the same interests.  How? When you set up Social Bookmarking accounts (many are free) you have an online "Card Catalog" all your own. You can store and classify your bookmarks. You can also use the databases that others have set up to browse or research any topic.

Let's say you are interested in Quilting. You can tell your Bookmark service to find all bookmarked web pages on Quilts. It will point you to those sites, help you organize the links, and give you the option of sharing your links with others. People doing research papers, gathering information for presentations, or just searching for particular things to buy, sell, or do - all use these services.

How would someone know you have posted a new link? A couple of different ways. They might go into their Bookmarking service and do a search. Or they may have signed up to receive notification every time something new is added to the "Card Catalog."  This notification is called an RSS feed. Real Simple Syndication is the public's way of getting the kind of information that used to be sent across the AP wires. Only now, your customized preferences come right to your inbox or a designated webpage. I have some information on this technology for you at http://www.cactuswrangler.com/find-an-rss-feeder/

The best part of Social Bookmarking? As you develop your own database online of wonderful links, you will find yourself in the midst of a world community with the same interests. You start to bond with people thousands of miles away. You create collaborative efforts in finding and supporting each other's websites and research.

Social Bookmarking is also a wonderful way to advertise your business. If you provide Bookmarking links at the bottom of each of your web pages, or your blog (online journal) posts, you make it easy for people to add you to their lists of favorites. In other words, if people are interested in your home-made fudge website they will advertise it for you. If they like you and what you are doing, they want to share it with like-minded friends. Make it easy for them to do that by putting Social Bookmarking links on your site so all they have to do is click on the icon, and they are advertising you.

As with anything on the internet, the more people think it's great, the more sophisticated it gets. There are dozens of Bookmarking services. It's a bit of a chore to figure out which ones to use.

Because of that, there are many on the web trying to make a living telling you how to do make money at this. Rather than buying one of those  e-books just yet, go to Wordpress, which is the blog service I use  http://tinyurl.com/socialbk,  and read a trusted source on Social Bookmarking. Once you've read up on it, you can decide if you want to delve deeper into this technology.

Or - you can do what I've done. Hire a college kid. They know more about the web than I will know in a lifetime. Heck, 4th graders probably do!

Explore it and have some fun with it!
All the best,
Beth
