Run for the Roses

At this time of weddings and graduations, things are in transition. But sunshine and fragrance, summer fun and smiles, remind us to acknowledge the possibilities amidst the openings and closings. So let's enjoy, improve and give thanks. We can start by smelling the roses and adding to our knowledge-base to better spread both joy and information. As Khamit Kinks retires a service and celebrates our new nabe, I've been reflecting on my own inspiring meetings and sad farewells and I'm thankful to have a forum through which to share.

Run for the Roses

June is officially rose month. Be sure to take the time in life to stop and smell the roses. Brooklyn Botanic Garden makes certain that you have the opportunity to do so with their Cranford Rose Garden, now in full bloom; with once-a-year bloomers, repeat bloomers, old roses- pre-1900 hybrids, along with an array of tea roses.

I took this picture of the roses above along with many others last year on Rose Night at the  Cranford Gardens.  Check out the rest here at AnuEssentials FB

Atlantic Ave Fest.

I don't know if you've had the time to take notice when visiting the salon, but there are some amazingly chic and eclectic retail businesses on our stretch of Atlantic Avenue. The block association would like to highlight these unique boutique businesses by hosting an Extravaganza, on Saturday, June 16th from 1pm-5pm, on Atlantic Avenue from The BQE to 4th Avenue. We will be spinning beats in front of our salon to add to the festive environment. Stop by to see what specials these shops are offering that day and participate in supporting the small retail businesses in local communities.

Blogging While Brown

Last weekend I attended a conference called, "Blogging While Brown." I was surprised to learn that many in the Black Blogosphere consider this to be the new Black Media. As Black newspapers around the country fold and electronic media platforms squeeze out traditional Black news organizations, many view blogging as the new medium for cutting-edge and insightful news that is pertinent and insightful to the Black community. Such blog sites as thegriot.com and theroot.com have become the go-to places for the real stories in Black news and into the future. I found the Blogging While Brown conference an incredible resource for those who want to improve their online presence.

Happy Father's Day & Farewell Daddy

Preston & his name sake Prestonia

Father's Day is celebrated this month! We wish all those great fathers out there a very Happy Father's Day celebration. As some of you may already know, my father unexpectedly passed, just about a month ago. I never imagined that he would not be here this Father's Day.

We often take for granted that we have an extended amount of time and that those we love will be here tomorrow. That's not always the case. I am happy, though and now very appreciative of, the times we did share, for reconnecting with my father, realizing that he loved me and making it clear that I loved him. And so this Father's Day will certainly be a different one for me as I am sure it is yearly for those who have lost their fathers. For all those who still have their fathers, take not a moment for granted. Enjoy and have a great Father's Day! And for those who haven't already seen my video homage called Black Fathers Revealed, check it out.

Is My Own Hair Enough?

From one month to the next I go through any number of changes regarding how I want to wear my hair next.  When I have extensions I wish for just my hair, when I'm wearing just my hair as soon as a special event comes up, I feel I need more hair.  I thought I was alone in the see-saw madness.  But a number of sisters weighed in and I found I'm not alone in hair madness - Musings on Is My Own Hair Enough?

Sister Locks Adjusted

It has been a difficult decision to come to, but unfortunately, we have been forced to implement some drastic changes regarding our Sister Locks services at Khamit Kinks. As of June 1st we will no longer offer the installation of a full head of Sister Locks, though we will continue with re-tightening services.

However, our re-tightening service prices have changed. Sister /Brother Locks Touch-up Discount Thursdays has been discontinued as of June 1st. The new price is $65 per hour for all Sister Lock re-tightening services. Please rest assured that prior appointments already scheduled, are still valid at their original discounted rate.

Curly Divas Natural Hair Meet Up

I have been invited to speak at a natural hair meetup called Curly Divas Luncheon.  This gathering of Naturalistas is being organized by the very inspired La'Nisha Lenore.  I marvel at the younger generation of Naturalistas and admire their passion for discovering and celebrating their natural hair.  Despite the current marketing hype regarding transitioning READ More
