Swoon -    6/11

Moon, spoon, June! If you're of my generation or older, you'll remember that phrase. If not, a loose translation is: several things about June make us, well... swoon! It could be the sweet scent of roses in full bloom, the steady sunshine and rich greenery, weddings, graduations, picnics, or opening season for outdoor concerts. Whatever does it for you, we hope that you'll celebrate your beauty in the summer sun. So, in this edition we open dialogues about long hair and the gall of a non-Black person who denigrates the very notion of Black beauty. We also salute one of nature's juicy beauty gifts and the always stunning display of Black beauty at the annual Dance Africa! festival. Roses, rewards and dads are also on our minds here and we hope you'll take advantage of the always-open invitation to let us know what's on our mind.
Pink Grapefruit

Okay, I'll admit it: the grapefruit is not what you might consider a 'sexy' fruit. It doesn't conjure up the lusciousness of some of the more exotic fruits like mango, guava or papaya, but the grapefruit for me is a special fruit that does hold its own for healing and losing weight - Read more - grapefruit.

A Rose

orange rose
June is rose month in the northeastern U.S. It's when roses really show off their exquisite beauty.  After centuries of use, the oil procured from roses continues to be one of the most sought after essences in perfumery. Even if you can't readily identify it (real rose, not synthetic) in a perfume, it's in there, rounding off the sharp notes and lending some of its beauty to every other component of the blend. Roses are grown in many countries but some of the most beloved rose oils come from Arabia, India, Bulgaria, Egypt and Turkey, with each region's - Read more on roses

Dance Africa

dance africa 2011

Dance Africa took place this past weekend and if you weren't there you missed out on an enriching a fabulous experience of culture, art and beauty!  There's nothing like movement to help the spirit soar.  And while club dancing, street dancing and home dancing have their sparkle, there is nothing compares to cultural dance paired with traditional music.  It's awe-inspiring!  This is what I experienced watching Cuba's Ballet Folklórico Cutumba.  They were sensational and embodied the genius of the rich African cultural traditions that continue to thrive across the African Diaspora.

One of my favorite hobbies is people watching.  I imagine myself some type of artistic anthropologist whose job it is to discover the beauty in each being.  So to attend a festival like this where beauty abounds, is a sure treat for me!  Check out some of the art/beauty that I was able to capture able to capture.

Those Dedicated Dads

dad

l would ike to wish all those great fathers out there a Happy Father's Day! If you know anything about me, you know how much I like to put together inspiring images. I've decide to create a montage video in honor of fathers in our communities, which will showcase Black fathers with their children. I am looking for high quality-pictures that would feature just fathers with their children in any of the following settings:

You and your dad

You and your siblings with your dad

Your child or children with their dad

A family member (male) with his children

Your husband or significant other and his child or children

If you have any of the above, please submit images for consideration to anu@khamitkinks.com

Thank you!

Is Your Hair Long Enough?

afro pony tail

Someone recently asked if I think many people want Locs just so they can have long hair. I don't know the answer to that; I think it's a case-by-case observation. I do know that long hair has been a standard of beauty in western culture. It has been mentioned since the beginning of western writings in every form imaginable, including prose, poetry, songs, fiction, nonfiction and even in sacred writings - Read more on the desire for long hair.

Study of Beauty

afro hawk

For those who may not have heard, a recent, so-called "scientific study" was done by Dr. Satoshi Kanasawa on the beauty of women in the world. The study concluded that of all the women in the world, Black women were the least attractive! Naturally, there was a Black-lash against this dubious 'study' featured in Psychology Today and it was pulled from their online journal. Petitions were launched to ask the magazine to apologize to their readers in general, and to Black women in particular. Another petition demanded to have Dr. Kanasawa removed from his post at London's School of Economics.

To think that in the 21st century someone would think they'd be able to get away with this blatant display of racism! Amazingly dumb for someone with a Ph.D.! That a reputable magazine like Psychology Today would print such an unscientific opinion and call it a scientific study, further boggles the mind. I am happy to report that the outcry against Dr. Kanazawa is being heard and it is likely that he will loose his position. Please sign the linked petitions to ensure that Dr. Kanazawa and others who think like him will realize they cannot denigrate us publicly and get away with it. Your voice can make a difference! Please sign this petition.
