Bring In The Heat!        Feb 2011

What a winter! Those of us who live on the East coast can't recall ever seeing as much severe winter weather as we have in the last two months. It's time to take matters into our hands and generate some heat of our own! You're invited to do just that at our Valentine's Day/ TV show celebration next week. By the way, we worked up a sweat at a fabulous Zumba class held at the salon last month (check out the pics). This month we're hot on the heritage trail, remembering our forebears during Black History Month. Check me out on Nappturalite radio, where I sought to bring a little heat and light to the natural hair conversation. Finally, bringing the heat for real were the many talented women who performed Chaka Khan's music at a United Negro College Fund benefit show in her honor. You know what would be really hot? If we all find a way to help the UNCF a bit as well! Warm wishes, everyone.

Our event was also hot, and in more ways than one! Despite the snow, we had a full house. And when our Zumba instructor Gena got started, the party was on! Gena arrived full of energy and gusto and we all had so much fun! Check it out here -

I was a guest on the Nappuralite Radio Blog this past Sunday. The show is a two-hour weekly program all about natural hair and how to care for it and make it thrive.  This segment was on caring for silver hair, how to train it, make it shimmer and  embrace it. Here's a link: Nappuralite Radio

Our Story Continues Every Month

Ella Barksdale

This is Black History month, when we are more readily able to see and hear storiesabout our legacy in this nation. The journey and great achievements made by people of African descent are examined and applauded. It's the one time that some intellectuals, writers, historians and professors of African History and culture find themselves so sought after they can barely handle the requests for their presence at speaking engagements.

Recently my beloved found a long-lost picture of his great-grandmother Ella Barksdale Brown (on Google) seen here in the middle with some of her classmates of the first graduating class from Spelman Seminary before it became Spelman College.
Ella Barksdale Brown, was an educator, anti-lynching activist, suffragist, and journalistI posted this picture of her  on Facebook and the response was tremendous. It made me realize the power and presence of the ancestors. They seem to be making their mark, being seen and felt in cyberspace.  By the way, this great-grandson was  surprised further, when finding a treasure-trove of her papers, housed at Yale's Beinecke Library's James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection.

I especially took notice of their natural hair styling of the women in the photo, considering that it was taken in 1884, a period preceding the straightening of hair. Notice the elegance and pride of these women!

A Tribute to Chaka Kham

Chaka Khan UNCF

Many of you know that I love the music of Chaka Khan. even named one of our popular styles after Chaka. If you haven't seen the 2011 UNCF tribute to Chaka, check your listing and make sure you check it out. It was so inspiring to hear about all the many students who are able to attend, get through college and graduate, thanks to funding by UNCF.

It was really wonderful to know that Chaka has her own foundation that contributes to the education of many young ones. There were many heavy hitters who sang Chaka's songs, such as Fantasia, Ledisi, Angie Stone and Stevie Wonder. But it was master songstress Bettye Lavette's version of "Love Me Still" that brought Chaka to tears.

I was certainly inspired to contribute to the United Negro College Fund and you can do so to at this link - UNCF.org
