in full bloom! What a lovely month June is! The air is fragrant, rain-showers
are less frequent and people are looking forward to weddings, vacations, time
off from school and outdoor concerts. Whatever your summer plans, we've got you
covered, with a program in the works for rewarding our loyal clients. If you're
in a wedding party or know a bride-to-be, take a look at how beautiful the
natural bride can be when creative hands work together. For those who will be
traveling (and we sincerely hope that's most of you) we have some advice about
travel-savvy hair. Speaking of travel, a recent trip led to an encounter that
sent me down memory lane. I also share impressions from a sweet-smelling
excursion right in Manhattan. And in the spirit of ventures and adventures, I'm
happy to share that one of my own sweetest dreams is finally coming true!
By the way, Brooklyn's summer
concert season kicked off with the amazing Jennifer Holliday last Thursday at Metro Tech, right across the street from the salon. If you attend any of the concerts please stop by to say hello or to make your next appointment. Metro Tech 2010 Concert series.

Take Us With You
|
Most of our hairstyles travel
well. You can wear them to the
beach, to the mountains or to a spa retreat. It just depends on what your particular travel needs are. If you're going to be in the water, but
are not planning to submerge your head, any style will do. But if you like to swim, frolic, and
don't mind getting dunked, then we recommend particular styles for that kind of
activity. Going away for the entire
summer? We have a number of styles
that go the distance. Attending a
wedding or special event abroad and want a style that will stand up to travel
woes? We can outfit you for that
as well. Fill out our Consultation Form and receive a one-on-one consultation for your summer 'do.' And, as always, travel safe and have
lots of fun! |
Documenting Silver
|
Some clients just can't believe it when I ask them to consider not trying to keep up with covering their silver hair. I truly admire silver hair. My own silver hair has been slow to come in, but finally I'm happy to report that it is showing a bit more with each passing month. It's my humble opinion that dyed hair doesn't make you look any younger, just the same age with dyed hair. But to prove my point, I'm on a photographic journey to document the brave sisters in this youth oriented society, who are willing to step out with their hair in its natural color. Stay tuned for more images.
This sister didn't know me from Adam, but after some coaxing allowed me to take her picture and shared with me that she started going gray at age eight (8). Now 50 years old, she loves and embraces her silver hair. If you have something to say on this matter, please post it on my To Dye For post.

Honey Suckle is in Bloom

Did you know this seductive flower's scent is so delicate it cannot be harvested? But when a gentle wind in my garden blew by me today, I knew I had done a great job at replicating this gorgeous scent...

Not Your Ordinary Bride

This spring Khamit Kinks
partnered with gown designer Cassandra Broomfield and headpiece designer Sherri Hobson of Beauloni for
another Natural Bride photo session.
This year's collaboration was kicked off when makeup artist Nicole Lundy
contacted Khamit Kinks about joining forces. Nicole brought in her friend, photographer Andre Walker. The
five of us crafted a collective vision, resulting in inspired visions of loveliness.
The natural bride is not your
ordinary bride. Her natural hair
alone, distinguishes her from your 'classic bride.' While there are many bridal magazines on the newsstands,
you'll be hard-pressed to find one that speaks to this exceptional bride, the
one who chooses to exquisitely express her distinctive style. So check out our spin on the unique
bride: The Natural Bride Natural Bride 2010 on You Tube

53 Years and Counting
Recently I was in Raleigh,
North Carolina at a local mall and I noticed a number of young women sporting
natural hairstyles. I was
pleasantly surprised when on several occasions these young sisters very
confidently and respectfully approached me to ask about my hair (at the time I was wearing the A-Nu 'Fro). People in the south tend to be so friendly. Anyway, one young
sister went as far as to ask how long I had been natural. She was about 20 years old, and I very
quickly thought, 'How am I going to tell her the truth without it sounding like
I roamed with the dinosaurs?! So,
I took a breath and proudly told her I had been natural for 43 years. But when I later thought about it, I've
been natural all my life (53 years) with the exception of one perm, when I was
ten. So there it is, 53 years of
natural hair and counting. Love
it!

Perfume Grading

Some of you may have an
inkling about my love of scent.
I'm intensifying my celebration of botanicals as I move towards
launching my natural perfume line! I would like to share a little of what the difference between natural perfumes and chemically bases perfumes.
For starters, the best perfumes are
those with a high volume of botanicals (plant materials). These scents are like the scents in nature, they don't announce you before you arrive and linger long after you've left, the way many commercial perfumes do. Natural perfumes have a sublime aroma that is multi-layered and evolve the way materials from nature naturally change, evolve and reveal themselves. Lesser-quality perfumes are high in alcohol and chemicals that give them a punch and in many cases an obnoxiously lingering/ lasting power that offers very
little in the way of plant materials. So needless to say, the Anu Essentials line of
natural perfumes are being created with
quality botanical ingredients such as essential oils, resins and balsams.
In the early spring, I had the wonderful experience of going on a
walking tour of some of New York's finest perfume boutiques where many natural perfumes were on display. Check out my impressions at My Sniffapalozza Experience.
