Spring Has Sprung
April 2009
Spring has definitely sprung here at Khamit Kinks! We have been very busy trying to keep up with the demand for our expertise.  It was as if on the first day of spring, a trumpet went off and the race was on!  We happily have a lot going on and more coming up. So stay tuned and please join us as we take on this season and all its glory. We hope that your days are filling with promise as well. If not, spring forth and take advantage of the electricity in the air! Let the scent of spring flowers remind you that life is sweet and enjoyment of it is absolutely free!

Trini Braids

The Trini Braids were hot when they first came out back in the 90's.  They were featured in Essence magazine in a sizzling photo of a beautiful model.  We were called on by a client to revisit Trini Braids and we've updated them: they're not as long or heavy and look just fabulous! About.com
About.com, the search engine portal for The New York Times, contacted us recently and ask that we demonstrate for them six of our most popular styles (they actually choose the styles).  We've had two days of filming, with more day to go. This all happened  during salon hours.  And true to form, our sophisticated clients took it in stride and did not balk at the inconvenience.  We sincerely appreciate your time, participation, and patience.  As soon as the videos go up, you'll be the first to know.

Alluring Looks.com
The Bridal season is here and AlluringLooks.com is featuring some of our bridal looks, upcoming this month.  We're also having a new bridal photo session this month, so there will be some new looks for the 2009 bride to choose from.

Heads Up: HAIRitage

Save the date!  On Wednesday, May 20th, "Heads Up! A Soulful Celebration of Our HAIRitage" will gather thinking people of all ages to talk, laugh, and be fearlessly tender-headed. Khamit Kinks client Melba Tolliver, the nation's first Black TV news anchorwoman, will read from her memoir. We'll also be joined by author Camille Yarbrough, author and editor Asha Bandele, filmmaker Kathe Sandler, author Mireille Liong, founder of going-natural.com, as well as yours truly and others to be announced. We'll have film, music, performance and great fun. It's at the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts on the Long Island University campus, just two blocks from the salon. Put it on your calendars so you don't miss it!  More details will follow in next month's issue.

Client Profile - Donna Johns

Longtime Khamit Kinks client Donna Johns has an appreciation for quality, artistry and innovation; it motivates her professional life and factors in her appreciation of the salon. Currently working as Ad Sales Operations Manager for TV One, Donna has enjoyed a rewarding career that's offered her many creative opportunities.

"I've been in entertainment in one form or fashion since graduating from Anu's alma mater, Howard University in Washington, DC," says Donna.

She started out playing gospel music as a DJ for WYCB, a Washington, DC-based radio station.  A year later, she moved to New York City and worked for New Jersey's famous jazz station WBGO as a weekend DJ. Living in New York fed her love of music. Following her dreams, she entered the recorded music industry, working first in artist development and then in marketing for labels such as Epic, RCA and Def Jam and Queen Latifa.  READ MORE
