Quote of the Week...

Greetings Member,

Welcome to 2012 everyone, where we find ourselves already into Spring and preparing for the coming season. Gavin is in the process of doing Operation Transformation with the ladies so they'll all be fighting fit for the season ahead. No doubt it will be another great year socially with our wonderful Social Committee working hard to keep us all entertained. Best wishes to our Captains Vivienne and Paschal and hoping this will be a year to remember. Of course let's hope the Teams will bring home some winning penants - we can't leave it all for the Bloomers to do again this year!!

New Years Eve & The Captains' Drive In

We had a great start to 2012 with new Captains Vivienne and Paschal first major social event, the 'New Year's Eve Ball'. It was a black tie event, so all the men looked like James Bond and all the girls looked like they were just off the red carpet. The evening started off with a meet and greet from our Captains and a glass of bubbles quickly into your hands. Then it was into the bar. The dining room was transformed into a room of elegance thanks to the Social Committee & Maria Stanley.

The night was a huge success. 'Johnny Be Goode' were the entertainment and held responsible for ringing in the New Year. There was a rowdy crowd of 'young ones' ( a while since they were called that I'd imagine!) who caused murder on the dance floor, with lots of dancing, jiving, grooving and a fair bit of messing, leading to a very enjoyable way to end the year for all.

The Captains' Drive in took place on the 15th January. This event always draws a big crowd in support of our new Captains. Our Juvenile Captains, Conor Pender and Alyson Doyle were first off the tee, both holding their nerve as the youth tend to do, executing perfect drives down the first fairway. A hard act to follow, Captains Vivienne and Paschal were next in the line of fire. With a big crowd spectating, people were holding their breaths, as many were recalling the events of 2010 to past Captain Louise Church's 'Drive in' - or 'off' as was the case.  Oh, what a tragedy that was....and Louise should never be let forget!!

So back to the moment, Lady Captain Vivienne stood up taking a perfect swing sending the balll far up the middle of the fairway. Phew!  Now to Paschal... anything could happen here... Thankfully, he brought his 'A' game and sent a screamer of a drive up the middle, well not quite the middle, but sure on this occasion it never matters where the ball finishes.  A popping of a champagne bottle, a clashing of glasses, to enormous round of applause by a great gathering of supporters for all our New Captains of the season.  The Drive in was followed by a shot gun start scramble which saw 25 teams competing for the first team prize of the year.

Winter League 2012

The winter league is well under way with only 3 weeks remaining. This year sees 14 ILGU teams and 11 GUI teams. The GUI teams have a huge number of 18 per team, how on earth could you fail to win with 18 players? The ILGU teams have kept it to a manageable 8 person team. For the ILGU side, the 'Magnificant Seven' leads last years winners 'Les Deux Chapeaux 2' by 16 points, thanks to a wonderful performance by Siobhan Smyth last Tuesday, bringing in 25 pts for her team. And yes, it was for 9 holes and yes, we were on full greens!! - Well done Siobhan.

There's a lot of team building in the way of coffee mornings and evening teas or motivational teas as the managers like to think of it, but really it's all to have a bit of fun.

The GUI winter league is always a bit more competitive, it's all that testerone the men possess - at any age it seems. John White's 'White knights' are looking for their 3rd victory. After clipping the wings of the Regal Eagles in the final day of last year's competition, Whitey's team are going for their hat-trick, although it's hard to see them lasting the pace, as the collective age of his team is 1080 years, WOOOHO...that's a lot of years no matter how fast you read it. Barry McConville is the junior of the team, so that will give you an idea of how old they actually are!!! But John is determined to do the '3 in a row', even supplying his men with Zimmer frames. Good luck men!

The Regal Eagles are coming back fighting this season, now leading 'Friday Night Flyers'  by 10 pts. This youthful team is carefully managed by Conor McDonald, their collective age being 570 years.....570 years!... and it was a lot lower before Captain Paschal joined them. Conor was hoping to keep his team on the youthful side, but who could refuse the Captain? Conor knows what works and how to work it, as Paschal brings with him the Captains line every Saturday without fuss, so he was welcomed with open arms, despite his age and his swing! Conor is an example to all Managers, (listen up Declan Lernihan..) - supplying his team with 'Regal Eagle' merchandise in the way of tees, markers, ProV1 balls, Range Finders, R11 drivers, stickers for their scorecards and business cards that he requires his team to casually drop into their opposition's bag - thats alot of gear! Conor doesnt stop there, hosting evenings of literature, reading the greats, such as Dr Bob Rotella. The guy knows no limits, he has even set up a blog for his team which is worth a visit, if you're having a bad day, it promises to bring a smile to your face: 'theregealeagles.blogspot.com'.

This is a copy of the business card that the Regal Eagles are leaving around the place to intimidate their opposition. For all those who didn't attend Private Schooling, it translates from Latin - 'White Knights beware'.

Rule Changes 2012

Fellow golfers, I am sure you are aware that there have been a few changes to the rules since the 1st January. I will cover 3 of them in this article and the remaining changes in the next newsletter. The first thing for you to do is to dig deep into the darkest corners of your golf bag, find, retrieve and throw the" out of date" rule book into your recycling bin. Unless it says 2012- 2015 on the cover, get rid of it. It will only cause confusion and the new books are available in the club and are free. The R&A have printed 2.6 million copies of same!!

In the new rule book, all the principal changes are explained on page 6 so no excuse.

1.Addressing the Ball. This definition has been changed so that a player has now addressed the ball simply by grounding the club immediately in front of or behind the ball, regardless of whether he has taken his stance. Therefore the Rules generally no longer provide for a player addressing the ball in a hazard.

FYI:  You will find all the definitions in alphabetical order from page 22 on. When reading any rule of golf you will see some key words italicised.. any word in italics is explained in the Definition section. These definitions are a great help to understanding the rules.

2. Rule 18 deals with the ball at rest being moved e.g. by either an outside agency , or the player , the opponent etc. It explains about replacing the ball and what penalty, if any, applies. There is a small but important change to Rule 18-2b.

18.2b Ball moving after Address. A new exception has been added that exonerates the player from penalty if his ball moves after address when it is known or virtually certain that he did not cause the ball to move . For example, if a gust of wind moves it after address there is no penalty and the ball must be played from its new position.

Who can forget what happened to Padraig Harrington whilst playing in the 2009 US Masters. Padraig had addressed his ball on the 15th green. It was blustery and unfortunately his ball moved due to the wind and he was penalised 1 stroke ! There was outrage amongst fans at the unfairness of it all so the rule was revised because of this incident.

So now if the ball moves after address (see above for new definition) and it is known or virtually certain that the player did not cause the ball to move, there is no penalty. See Rule 18 for all the details.

Just to complicate matters, gravity is an exception to this..if the ball moves due to gravity, there is a penalty.. Who ever said golf was a simple game!!

3. Great news to finish with... there is now no limit on the value of a prize for a hole- in- one. So if some very generous sponsor donates a car or a diamond necklace for a hole- in- one, we can accept it! Can there be any better motivation for practicing our golf?

Yours in golf,

Anne O'Sullivan

Help Wanted!

The Centenary Committee needs your help!

We are currently engaged in an exercise of transcribing some selected extracts from old Castle Minute Books (going back as far as 1913): this will constitute a major input to compiling the Club history. To date we've received great support from a number of members who have made their time and typing skills available to us, but we've still a lot of work to do and we need more volunteers. If you can type and can spare a few hours we'd love to hear from you. This is your opportunity to get involved in Centenary activity well in advance of the big year!

Table & Putting Quiz Night
A record attendance of 29 tables turned up on January 27th at Castle for the annual Golf Putting Quiz.

This night had something for everyone from identifying spices to solving dingbats to knowing your TV tunes of the 70's and being able to putt. A great night was had by everyone with the Keith and Charlotte Cairns led team accompanied by Paul Swaine and Marie Fitzpatrick coming out on top.

Thanks to a very hard working social committee and Yes! negative marking may be introduced for SIM next year!!

Congratulations Michael Kearney

Good Companions Jubilee Year

The year 2012 is an important one for the Good Companions. It marks the Diamond Jubilee of the setting-up of the Group in 1952. The foundation meeting was held ( in Vaughan's pub in Terenure) in June 1952. Since that time, countless older Castle Members have enjoyed the golfing and social activities of the Group.

At present, about thirty members turn out to play every Thursday afternoon, and they are joined afterwards in the Bar by the less active members, who come regularly to socialise in the true spirit of the Good Companions. All are agreed that this weekly get-together provides an important, and indeed in some cases,a vital contact point for the Senior Citizens amongst us.

The Good Companions welcome new Members and those who think they might like to join should ask any Member of the Group, who will be happy to put them in touch with the Committee. It should be noted that the most important requirement of Membership is not one's golfing ability, but the desire to enter into the spirit of the Group.
