VLA featured news!
New York State to require 50 hours of pro bono service for all lawyers seeking admission to the New York State Bar.
At the Annual Law Day address at the Court of Appeals, Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman announced a new pro bono service requirement for those seeking admission to the New York state bar to take effect in 2013. This requirement of a minimum of 50 hours of law-related pro bono service will be the first of its kind in the country for state bar admission. According to Lippman, the new requirement has been "fully embraced" by the presiding justices who must approve it. Prospective lawyers will be required to submit an affidavit describing their pro bono activities in detail along with information about the organization through which the work was done and their supervising attorney. Chief Justice Lippman was quoted as saying: "[I]f pro bono is a core value of our profession, and it is-and if we aspire for all practicing attorneys to devote a meaningful portion of their time to public service, and they should-these ideals ought to be instilled from the start, when one first aspires to be a member of the profession." The new requirement will affect the approximately 10,000 lawyers who are admitted to New York's bar each year.
