December 2011

Greetings New York!

VLA hopes that everyone had a great Thanksgiving and is ready to dive into a brisk December and the beginning of winter! Looking back on the fall, VLA was blessed with much for which it is very thankful.

In particular, VLA would like to thank the City University of New York for hosting VLA Associate Director Sergio Muoz Sarmiento's November talk on "Topics in Art Law". VLA would also like to thank Jennifer Baek from New York Law School and the Brooklyn Indie Music Festival, and Sarah Eve Keller from the Quinnipiac University School of Law for hosting fundraising events in September, proceeds from which benefitted VLA. Lastly, VLA would like to extend its thanks to all of the people and organizations who made possible the following fall VLA clinics: the clinic co-hosted by Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP and the legal department at Citigroup; the clinic hosted by Shearman & Sterling LLP; and the clinic co-hosted by Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and TimeWarner.

VLA begins December with an appearance at the New Art Dealers Alliance's 2011 Miami Beach Art Fair from December 1 through December 4. We then gear up for our signature event of the season: VLA's 2011 Winter Party, which will feature the opening reception of VLA's Art & Law Residency Exhibition-Notice of Public Hearing. VLA and its Art & Law Residency program are also very proud to announce that 2010-2011 residency alumnus Blane De St. Croix and his work Uneven Terrain will be featured as the cover story in the December issue of Sculpture Magazine. Congratulations Blane!

VLA would like to remind you that if you are sending out holiday cards this year, please don't forget about the Holiday Card Program featuring images by Stephen Harmon.

Please note that VLA's offices will be closed for the winter holidays from Monday, December 26th, 2011 through Monday January 2nd, 2012. We will re-open on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012. Safe travels home and happy holidays and New Year to all!

Best,

Donate to VLA

VLA has seen an increase in demand for pro bono legal services, in-house consultations, legal clinics, and educational programming, and we expect 2012 to be even more demanding. Would you like to support more VLA legal services and educational programming?

In 2011, your support will make possible:

  • More legal services to low-income artists
  • More legal services to arts nonprofit organizations
  • More educational programming
  • More scholarship programs
  • More outreach programming
  • Maintaining lower fees for legal services and educational programming
  • More discounts on legal books for artists

Donations of any size will have a positive impact on our ability to provide vital services for artists and the arts community. $5, $10, $25, or $75 will help. In fact, if you donate more than $100 we will send you a VLA Supporter Box. What's in a VLA Supporter Box? Click
