VLA NEWSLETTER

November 2011

Greetings New York!

VLA wishes everyone a creatively spooky yet safe Hallowe'en at the end of an eventful and only somewhat snowy October!

Highlights of the past month include: a fully subscribed Entertainment & Arts Career Counseling and Resume Review Clinic and Networking Reception hosted by Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, and Garrison; a Volunteer Attorney Introduction to VLA CLE and Mixer with Sergio Muoz Sarmiento, VLA's Associate Director; and our popular Law School for Visual Artists, which ran weekly during October and wraps up November 2nd. VLA Executive Director Elena M. Paul also conducted a Legal Issues in Dance class, whose publicity was greatly helped by an advertisement that Dance Magazine ran pro bono in its pages -VLA extends its wholehearted thanks for this generous contribution!

VLA kicks off November's chilly days with a pair of classes suitable for new non-profit organizations and artists who are considering forming such an organization: a Nonprofit Incorporation and Tax Exemption Workshop on November 15 from 1-4PM and a class on Fiscal Sponsorships-An Alternative to Forming an Arts Nonprofit on November 16 from 6-8PM, taught by Sergio Muoz Sarmiento .

VLA would also like to announce its Holiday Card Program featuring images graciously provided by Stephen Harmon - thank you Stephen!

Please note that VLA's offices will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 24th and Friday, November 25th. We will re-open on Monday, November 28th. Safe travels home and happy holidays to all! VLA wishes everyone a creatively spooky yet safe Hallowe'en at the end of an eventful and only somewhat snowy October!

Best,

VLA has seen an increase in demand for pro bono legal services, in-house consultations, legal clinics, and educational programming, and we expect 2012 to be even more demanding. Would you like to support more VLA legal services and educational programming?

In 2011, your support will make possible:

  • More legal services to low-income artists
  • More legal services to arts nonprofit organizations
  • More educational programming
  • More scholarship programs
  • More outreach programming
  • Maintaining lower fees for legal services and educational programming
  • More discounts on legal books for artists

Donations of any size will have a positive impact on our ability to provide vital services for artists and the arts community. $5, $10, $25, or $75 will help. In fact, if you donate more than $100 we will send you a VLA Supporter Box. What's in a VLA Supporter Box? Click
