10 Reasons to Use a Personal Trainer
How to Pick a Trainer
November 2008
Greetings!
The choice to use a Personal Trainer is an important one.  While there are lots of methods that people use to get fit including going to a gym, exercising to videos, or even just walking outdoors, using a Personal Trainer is by far the best way to ensure that you use your time efficiently, exercise safely, and learn how to workout for your specific needs and goals.  That is, if you find a Personal Trainer who is not only well educated but has some experience working with a variety of populations and is serious about helping you to realistically change your life (or at least your fitness status).  In addition, choosing the personal training route means your time, energy and money.

So, if you do ever decide to work with a Personal Trainer, it is important that you choose your Trainer wisely.  In this e-newsletter I want to talk a bit about why using a Personal Trainer is a great choice if you are truly ready to make a change in your life and commit to getting those results you may have been struggling towards for a long time. But remember, as you read about all the benefits of personal training, those benefits only apply when the Personal Trainer is a good match for you, your personality, your goals and especially your philosophy on fitness and personal wellness.

10 Reasons to Hire a Personal Trainer

personal training1 Your trainer is your coach and leader thereby helping you maintain a dedication to your exercise program and a healthy lifestyle.   A MissFIT Personal Trainer's job is not only to help you achieve your goals, but also to inspire a realistic and healthy attitude about fitness, weight, and health. That way, as you do achieve your goals you will also adopt a mindset conducive to LONG TERM success and fewer worries that you will lose the results you have achieved.  We want to train your mind and body for success.
You will learn to focus on realistic goals and actually achieve them!   MissFIT's philosophy is all about what is realistically achievable. We will not ask you to jump through hoops or perform miracles in order to reach your goals. Sometimes that means that we have to work with you on what is attainable in the time frame you have in mind. Other times that means we have to challenge you more than what you thought you could do and you will actually exceed your personal expectations. Goals are about flexibility as life circumstances change and we understand that. That client who simply wanted to rid herself from low back pain overtime shifts her focus to completing the breast cancer 3 day walk (a real life example!).  So, no matter what your specific situation is, we want to help you create goals that stretch your limits yet remain attainable and with our expertise, we are the best people for that job!

Accountability = Commitment! And the more committed you are, the greater the likelihood of successfully reaching your goals. When a Personal Trainer shows up at your door, she is expecting you to give her a full hour of your time and energy. Not only that, many  times a MissFIT Trainer keeps tabs on her clients in-between sessions with homework, emails, and phone calls to make sure that you are able to progress forward on your next session.  Everyone's accountability need is different and your Trainer will evaluate how much you need to remain committed to your program.

Learn how to exercise properly, safely and effectively.  A well educated and experienced Personal Trainer can create a program geared to the needs, fitness level, and body of each individual client.  The MissFIT Trainers take pride in programming properly for each of her clients. No two programs look the same since the needs, goals and situations of the individuals differ.  By working with a Trainer, you will learn how to adjust movement patterns and enhance your results through safe and effective routines.
Learn how being fit can change your life!  It is no exaggeration to say that increasing your level of fitness will change how you experience each day. You can learn to avoid low back pain, knee problems and even headaches through using your body more properly.  Your health will benefit immensely. You will be able to play with your kids or grandkids or simply move with greater ease. You will absolutely have more energy and even feel more alive when you practice regular physical activity.

Learn how to mix up your program to prevent physical and mental boredom and burnout.   You know that plateau that everyone complains about after a few weeks or months of a weight management or fitness program?  Well, by working with a Personal Trainer, you learn to avoid that frustration of being physically 'stuck'.  In addition, your Trainer creates new and fun programs for you all the time not only to progress you physically forward but to ensure that you have fun and learn to enjoy all the different ways that your body works.

You will improve your performance, be it golf, tennis, football, running, mommy duties or simply day to day function.  Everyone defines 'performance' differently for their lives. So, from the very first moment that we talk to a potential client, we are gauging what is important to them and how we can make them better at what they do while helping them reach their goals.  So, whether it is cleaning the house with fewer aches and pains or it is training for a marathon, a Personal Trainer is mindful of how to improve the performance of your body.

Stop wasting time or risking injury by working with a more effective program.  I cannot tell you how many times I have heard women tell me that they have been going to the gym for months (even years) without seeing results. They feel like they have been wasting time and money.  And, while they are healthier for even incorporating activity into their lives, they also deserve to see and feel some results for their work! By working with a Trainer, your time will be used efficiently and properly as each exercise you do supports what you need to accomplish.

You will develop the fitness routine that makes sense for you and your lifestyle.  No need to worry-Your MissFIT Trainer will not give you homework for 9 hours a weeks if your lifestyle only allows for 4 hours a week. Moreover, we will not ask you to run on the treadmill if you despise it. Despite what the fad programs say, there are many means to a successful end when it comes to weight and fitness. It is unlocking the best course of action for each individual that will make the long term difference.  We understand that our ideas about what is ideal for each client to reach her goals might not be realistic in the midst of all her responsibilities. So, our goal is to create something that fits for her and allows her to reach her goals without fitness becoming another stressor. After all, we want you to love it (okay, at least embrace it without cringing)!

You will enhance the quality of your life!  This point is best defined by experiencing it. Just as there is no way to tell a woman how a child (or perhaps a spouse or a pet or even a great job) will enhance her life without her actually feeling the difference for herself, I cannot simply tell you how doing what it takes to achieve your personal fitness and wellness goals will make a difference in your life.  Words cannot explain how taking care of your body, embracing it's abilities, improving its functioning, and appreciating how it works can actually impact your outlook and life experience.  And what is even more difficult to explain is how the journey ends up meaning even more than the destination

Weeding through all of the information available on working with a Personal Trainer as well as how to choose one can be daunting.  It is easy to feel overwhelmed and avoid the possibility of how a Trainer might actually be a great option for you simply because you do not know how to go about finding a good one.

So, I want to give you a fwe helpful hints when it comes to picking a Personal Trainer for you.  Of course, I have a vested interest in you choosing a MissFIT Personal Trainer and I believe that our fitness experts are top notch as is our method of matching you with the Trainer best suited for your needs!  But, my bias aside, there are some things to absolutely take into account when deciding to commit your time, energy and money in working with a Personal Trainer:
  • Does she have degree and/or certification?  MissFIT has very stringent criteria here and only accepts the best credentialed Trainers.
  • Does she have the areas of expertise you are looking for (i.e., education in functional training, Pilates, yoga, cardiac issues, arthritis, etc.)?
  • Is she concerned with YOUR goals and interests or is she simply trying to 'fit' you into a cookie cutter program she offers?
  • Does she use professional forms and is she aware of appropriate information to collect for safety and proper programming (health history forms, informed consent, and physician consent where needed)?
  • Does her personality and philosophy mesh with yours (this is more important to your results than you think!)?
  • Can she answer your questions about programming, reasons for including exercises in your program, or general fitness related concerns?

These questions are a great place to start when looking for a Personal Trainer.  Since there is, unfortunately, no standardization in the fitness industry you must take responsibility for who you invest in when it comes to your fitness. So, happy hunting and please let us know if we can help you!
