Board Leadership Program
Is Your Organization in Need of Board Members?

BVU's Board Leadership Program is seeking to expand our pool of nonprofit organizations with board governance needs. Our program's goal is to strengthen the capacity of area nonprofit organizations to serve the community by training and referring qualified professionals to fill vacancies on their boards of directors.  BVU's board leadership candidates are highly capable professionals representing nearly every area of the business sector.  Since 2003, we have placed 360 of our business members on nonprofit boards and 40% of these candidates have gone on to take board leadership positions.

In order to join our pool of over 250 nonprofits and be eligible to receive a trained candidate from our business member community, nonprofit organizations must undergo a Board Governance needs assessment and complete an organizational profile. Simply meet with BVU staff to review your governance needs and complete an annual update and BVU will work to match you with a board candidate that both fulfills your organization's needs and has a passion for your mission!

*We have a particular interest in expanding our network to include more nonprofit partners in Harford, Howard and Carroll Counties.

**There is a $150 application fee for organizations that are not members of Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations.

Volunteer Consulting Group Series
BVU's Citi-sponsored workshop on skills-based volunteeringAnnouncing BVU's New Service for Nonprofits

BVU will be hosting its first "Volunteer Consulting Group" event on March 19, 2010 withthe Greater Baltimore Technology Council (GBTC). Through this unique event, professionals from GBTC-member companies will be offering pro-bono consulting to nonprofits facing challenges with Technology (IT).

Over the last year, skills-based volunteering has received tremendous interest as businesses seek new, innovative and meaningful ways to contribute to their communities, while encouraging the professional growth of employees. The Volunteer Consulting Group events were created to help connect talented professionals to nonprofits that need counsel and advice.  In this series we will focus on Informational Technology issues such as Web Development/Design, Social Media Planning/Execution, Database Design/Management, Network Management and more.  Nonprofit executives responsible for Information Technology at their organization will be provided with 60 to 90 minute consulting sessions with area professionals on topics related to their areas of expertise.  Each professional volunteer in attendance has expressed an interest in working with a local nonprofit as a pro-bono consultant, so the session is likely to develop into a longer-term relationship in which nonprofits in attendance will receive professional services or advising from a skilled volunteer.

This is the first in a series of Volunteer Consulting Group events and BVU is glad to report that tickets to this event sold out only 6 days after its announcement!  We look forward to the next event in the Volunteer Consulting Group Series and would appreciate your input on potential topics.  Please send your suggestions for future Volunteer Consulting Group meeting topics to info@bvumaryland.org. Read More Here!

Baltimore City Community Service Program

Looking for a New Opportunity for Volunteer Recruitment?

Baltimorecitylogo

BVU and Volunteer Central are glad to pass on information to help your organization take advantage of Baltimore City's Community Service Program.

Created over twenty years ago to address the overcrowding of Baltimore City prisons, the Community Service Program provides the judges of Baltimore City's Circuit Courts the option to offer defendants convicted of non-violent crimes an option to perform community service in lieu of incarceration.  Hundreds of volunteers are available daily to help your organization with its most pressing needs! Keep this recruitment outlet in mind when you are setting up for your next event, organizing a community clean-up or sprucing up our community tree canopies!

All participants in the Community Service Program are subject to a mandatory criminal background investigation.  Those partcipants with histories of violent crime are disqualified from the program.  Only approved volunteers are matched with city agencies or nonprofit organizations in need of community service volunteers.  Agencies registered to receive volunteers through this program are invited to work with the program's managers to stipulate their organization's restrictions against individuals with specific charges.

If you are interested in registering your agency as a Worksite for Baltimore City's Community Service Program please contact Dexter T. Walker, Site Coordinator at dexter.walker@baltimorecity.gov or 410-396-1191.
