Business Spotlight

On Monday, January 18, 2010, 86 Target employees celebrated MLK Day by volunteering at the Institute for Business and Entrepreneurship (IBE). Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU) helped Target identify the projects at the school, purchase the supplies and manage the volunteers. This project channeled over $30,000 in donations and volunteer hours to the school.

For approximately five hours, volunteers worked on cleaning and painting lockers, the library and two classrooms that were transformed into a Dance Room and a Food Pantry. The projects identified by BVU will enhance the students' learning experience by providing opportunities for students to connect classroom learning to real-world applications, support creative/ extracurricular activities and improve the school's physical environment. This MLK Day, Hope Worldwide's Baltimore Chapter recruited 254 volunteers for a tremendous service effort that revitalized the Parks Heights community.  The day of service projects included a neighborhood-wide promotion of energy conservation and fire safety as well as two beautification projects for community churches and playgrounds.  The inspirational day of service culminated with an award ceremony for the MLK Day "I Have a Dream" contest, through which Baltimore City Public School students were awarded over $1000 in cash prizes donated by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
